What are some good theatre-y songs that are not from musicals?
Examples are "The Alto's Lament", "Taylor The Latte Boy", "The Girl In 14G"
Technically, "..14 G" is from TMM, but was cut when Kristen Chenoweth left the role. (I believe thats the reasoning)
I love "I'm Not Waiting" by Julia Murney...and "Perfect," Julia Murney and Sherie Rene Scott both have a version of it.
I also like "I Will Follow," by Lauren Kennedy.
"Wonderful You" by Audra McDonald is also a wonderful song.
Ute Lempur has done a lot of really cool german cabaret songs. They're on itunes check em out!
"Sara Lee" by Kander and Ebb, I know its from a musical review but its not in an actually musical.
Jason Robert Brown has a bunch in his book and cd. "Someone to Fall Back On", "Letting You Go", "Getting Out"
I don't know if it's from a show or not, but there's also a song about doing the Sunday Times crossword puzzle that is quite catchy.
"Taylor, the latte boy" is from ADVENTURES IN LOVE by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich...
As far as I know "Girl in 14G" was written with Chenoweth in mind but not specifically for Millie.

"Nobody Does it Better," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" and almost anything Carly Simon or Carole King touch sound like they should be in musicals.
Aren't these usually referred to as "Undercover Showtunes?"

Wasn't "And I Will Follow" originally written for a musical? I'm pretty sure it's in the liner notes of Lauren Kennedy's JRB album (which I don't currently have here, or else I'd look it up).
I love Lin-Manuel Miranda's "BTW, Write Back," from Andrea Burns's solo album.
Any stage musical would have been lucky to feature any of these songs in their scores but none were written for any show:
The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else)
One Less Bell to Answer
Breezin' Along with the Breeze
Everybody Loves a Lover
Moon River
Wedding Bell Blues
Color My World
A House is not A Home
Goodbye to Love

I've always thought that ABBA's "Winner Takes It All" should have been an 11:00 number. (Of course before Mamma Mia came along).
Well there's "I Won't Mind", which was originally written for The Other Franklin. But it was never finished so I guess the song kind of belongs in this category.
Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell" sounds like a rock musical, sort of in the fasion of Tommy.
Every time I hear Josh Groban's "The Prayer" I think it's from a show.
On the same lines as Sara Lee, I'm pretty sure "My Coloring Book" isn't from a musical
On Broadway.
I believe the only Rodgers and Hart song not written for a show was Blue Moon. But because they wrote it everyone assumes it was written for a musical.
Kurt Weill's "I Don't Love You."
