Jordan, that was said toward the beginning of Coven but Murphy changed his mind (surprise!).

Calling them "mid season finales" is a new thing. Shows have always taken a break around the holidays, though.

But, in the case of something like The Walking Dead, they take a few months off. That's something relatively new, no? I actually don't think I ever heard the term until The Walking Dead.

Yeah, when I was a kid there were reruns the week of Christmas and New Years and then it was back to new episodes in January.

Networks starting doing this years ago when viewers complained about too many repeats. Serial shows with more involved plots took on this type of schedule, especially. I remember it being a big deal with ABC when they aired "LOST". Unlike comedies, the trend for serialized dramas moved to a block schedule (September to December and then March to May, for example) to respond to this and also, in doing so, cut back the episode order from a typical 22 to 24 episodes to 16-17.

It saves money and allows networks to launch other programs in coveted time slots. Now, with the advent of AMC, USA, etc and the success of shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, White Collar, and Suits, we're seeing even shorter "event-type" limited series, like Hostages and Under the Dome, that run for around 13 episodes.

Unfortunately, networks get greedy and ruin any plot/momentum a series has if it shows signs of greater success, as ABC is doing with Under the Dome by bringing it back for a second season and making changes late in the game to ruin the entire first season, which was to have been a limited series, by having it go nowhere for the season finale.

BTW, I loved AHS in the first season, hated the second season, and this season is so schizophrenic I don't know what I am watching from week to week. Thankfully, I hear that the series will be located entirely in NYC next season and most of the Ohio cast will be cut. Oh, is that the wrong show?

What the hell is Queenie so pissed off about?! She tried to mount a bull and it almost killed her. The witches nursed her to health. What have they ever done to her?

I basically understood Queenie's powers as having to be self-inflicted and projected to a specified victim in the vicinity, so I just assumed she recovered from the stomach gunshot wound or something (but is now immune to silver bullets, which makes sense because they're really for werewolves anyway). But like JG2, I didn't get why she returned so PISSED OFF when she was turning on the coven in the first place and CHOSE to return.

I should have just waited for the series to end and binge watch the whole thing like I did with Asylum. It was a lot easier to follow. I didn't have to pause the beginning of each episode while my boyfriend and I try to recall the events of the following week to figure out what they're doing or talking about.

And the baby didn't come out of nowhere. Voodoo Mama stole the baby from a hospital. She was supposed to give it to Papa Ge Sly Demon of Death, remember?

So, Fiona can bring a baby back from the dead, but she can't heal her daughter's pain. Zoe found out that Fiona and Marie killed Nan and wanted revenge, until Myrtle told her to leave. Then she just left. Marie Laveau is basically useless. The ghosts can come and go as they please, appear and disappear at will, hold things like dolls, babies, axes and make drinks, and kill living people. This is honestly the most disjointed season yet.

I dunno, it feels like even Murphy has just given up even trying (I suppose I shouldn't be surprised...) I actually felt Asylum managed to brilliantly come together in the end (probably because of the gossip that Tim Minear was the actual showrunner last year due to how busy everyone was--he was demoted this year,) and at the least, aspects and characters from it did stick in my memory.

More and more with Coven as soon as its over I can barely remember what happened (exception goes to minotaur rape.) Or what the time frame is (LaLaurie can just take over running her house museum and nobody notices?)

The setting doesn't help--we barely see New Orleans, and at least in the Asylum it kinda made sense that all this craziness was going on and nobody noticed. Hell even in Ghost House or whatever season 1 was the ghost aspect made sense as to why they couldn't leave.

I know they're in a mansion but really nobody notices that all this stuff is going on with other characters practically under their noses? I have no idea how or why the Axe Man managed to stop being a ghost when they released him. Or what happened to the Butler to bring him back. Or pretty much anything. Sure the hour still flies by in a camp, *shake your head* way but...

EricMontreal - I agree with you 100%. Some good performances (Conroy and Bates are the clear standouts) and a couple of wildly entertaining scenes, but "Coven" lacks any cohesiveness or sense of continuity.

I have no f*cking clue what happened last night. I just gave up...I mean, I watched till the end of the episode, but was looking forward to watching Top Chef to scrub the ridiculousness from my mind.

What happened??? I mean...

Well see, um, and NOW they can all make knives fly out of the butcher block and stab people with em.

Next season they should run the season from beginning to end with no breaks. Not even for the holidays.

Don't kill that momentum again.

The main problem with this season (of which there are plenty) is the fact that the stakes are incredibly low. If people can come back to life (as I believe every character has done at least once) then who cares if someone dies. I will highly doubt that Fiona is actually dead since we never saw her fed to the gators and Ryan Murphy loves feeding people to gators.

I didn't really understand showing that dumb 7 powers video so late in the season. They've been talking about it since the beginning so why not start the show with that?

My guess is that Queenie will become to the next Supreme to show how tolerate they are of black people and the amazing things they can do/become.

This season is a hot mess! I stopped trying to make sense of it all about 3 or 4 episodes in. The performances by Bates, Conroy, and Lange have been the highlight, but it's definitely my least favorite season, thus far.

There were supposed to be clues to Season 4 in last night's episode? Anyone catch any? Based on interviews given by Murphy, my early guess is something having to do with Project MKUltra.

From Wikipedia:
Project MKUltra is the code name of a U.S. government human research operation experimenting in the behavioral engineering of humans through the CIA's Scientific Intelligence Division. The CIA project was coordinated with the Special Operations Division of the Army's Chemical Corps. The program began in the early 1950s, was officially sanctioned in 1953, was reduced in scope in 1964, further curtailed in 1967 and officially halted in 1973. The program engaged in many illegal activities; in particular it used unwitting U.S. and Canadian citizens as its test subjects, which led to controversy regarding its legitimacy. MKUltra used numerous methodologies to manipulate people's mental states and alter brain functions, including the surreptitious administration of drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as various forms of torture.

A precursor of the MKUltra program began in 1945 when the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency was established and given direct responsibility for Operation Paperclip. The program recruited former Nazi scientists, some of whom studied torture and brainwashing, and several who had been identified and prosecuted as war criminals during the Nuremberg Trials.

'I didn't really understand showing that dumb 7 powers video so late in the season. They've been talking about it since the beginning so why not start the show with that?'

AGREED! If the entire season is leading up to this, we needed this info by episode 2! Plus, it's the only thing from last night's episode that I thought was arresting and interesting.

Seriously, I have no idea what happened. I *think* Queenie basically performed most of the seven wonders or whatever it's called. I *think* Kathy Bates chopped up Angela Bassett into little bits and that's how she died? Or The Black Devil (I mean...really???) came and rescinded his offer to Angela because she was chopped into bits? And I *think* Angela Bassett might be the only human alive who can say the word 'can' in 18 syllables?

Is Lange dead? Really? Did we really need bitch fights (though who knew Lily Rabe could be so f*cking bad-ass)? What's it all about, Alfie??

They didn't actually mention the seven wonders until Stevie Nicks showed up, right? I don't think they had thought of it until then, and it ought to give her a chance to do her song of the same name in the big finale.

This season has pissed me off for a lot of reasons but the one that I will never be able to forgive it for was last night when it made me like Lily Rabe. And not just like, but get up and cheer for her.

But as for Annie Wilkes & Tina Turner, I think Precious convinced Beetlejuice to turn Turner mortal again so that she would die and be able to kill Wilkes and he could have them both in hell.
