SM2 - did you see the shortlist for Makeup? First of all, I would NEVER have placed CLICK into that shortlist. Where was X-MEN 3? PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2? Even SANTA CLAUSE 3 should have gotten in over CLICK!
Do they usually only nominate three films in the makeup category? I'd think there would be room for more, as you pointed out, Hook.
Makeup as always been 3, SM2. It's only been an Oscar category since the early '80s.
The Animated Feature category is "scalable" as far as nominees. It has to do with how many films are eligible. I can't remember the number, but I think it's 25. If there are 25 or more potential nominees, there will be 5 nominations for Animated Feature. Less than 25, and there will be three nominations.
Less than five, and they can potentially cancel the category altogether that year.

The DREAMGIRLS situation doesn't surprise me. They acknowledge a couple of stand-out performances, accept that it was made to look pretty and sound good - and almost half the noms are for the songs (did nothing else have a song written for it this year?)
But when it gets down to it, the direction and screenplay are seen as average - and those are the types of categories that indicate a best picture.

Thanks, b12b. I was wondering about animated films, too.
For some reason, I think I read that the Animated Film tally has to be 16 (and I think there were 15 this year...you'd think it would just be 15 that would bump it up for 5, but I want to say it must be anything more than 15). Whatever it was, I think they were right on the cusp and the last film got bumped to next year, so we're down to 3.
And back to the contemporary costume thing. What about The Queen! I think it's great when some non-period films get in there, but I think I would have rather seen Notes on a Scandal in there instead of The Queen if they were going for another non-glam period piece. Judi Dench's costumes totally added to her frumpiness (even when she got dressed up for the dinner invite, it was just perfect!). Speaking of which, I'd rather have seen Notes in there instead of Click if they were going for a "smaller" nomination. Judi Dench is so lovely, and boy did they make her a fright! Her hair!!!
Wait...
some people are actually shocked and appalled because DREAMGIRLS wasn't nominated for best picture?
HAHAHAHA.
Judy Dench was brilliant in Notes on a Scandal!
munk, not shocked, but disappointed and appalled. Okay, a TINY bit shocked. It was sooo close!
DG - right on!
"EVERYONE underestimated PAN'S LABYRINTH."
Not me. The emormous buzz surrounding this film and the 99% rave reviews assured it would be noticed by those in the know. I'm actually surprised it didn't get more nods than it did.
I'm shocked, but not surprised.
well i picked 4 of 5 in Picture, actor, actress and supp. actor. and all 5 supp. actress, and well my attempt at the directing category was a cluster ****. Paul Greengrass? Really?
I'm shocked, but not appalled. It had frontrunner status most of the year.
I did hope that DREAMGIRLS would be nominated, simply for publicity and such, (and I wanted UNITED 93 to take the slot, not the sterile IWO) but I do think that all of the best picture nominees are better than DREAMGIRLS.
I'm appalled, not shocked.

The Oscar committee are clearly racists.
Obviously. You're right. Last year they hated homos (but voted for a "race" movie) and this year, they hate blacks.
"It's a MEAN, NASTY, Respublican town..."
Quite frankly Dreamgirls was a mediocre film that has only done as well as it has because the original musical is such strong material and because of the overblown buzz about Jennifer Hudson's performance. It did not deserve a nomination for Best Picture or Director, and the Academy recognized that.

I say we riot!
Plus, where was the Best Picture nomination for Step Up, one of the most powerful films I saw all year?
I'm hoping for LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE to take the prize. I think it'll get Screenplay but Picture is going to have to be a triumph.
If THE QUEEN takes it, I will puke. The film is just WAY overrated!
HAHAHA.
This board cracks me up.
First, DREAMGIRLS is the second coming of christ, and perfect best picture material.
Now, after the snub, it's suddenly "Oh, well I never thought it was good enough."
Ha.

Wow! That kinda pisses me off about Dreamgirls. I am now really really praying that Little Miss Sunshine takes it, now that the OSCARS have lost all credibility.

Little Miss Sunshine didn't get a Best Director nomination.
Only 2 or 3 movies have ever won Best Picture without receiving a Best Director nomination.
You're just losing that NOW?

I call for a complete and total boycott of anything Oscar-related.
This is because of the Oscars' blatant racism of nominating Little Miss CRACKERshine over DreamPOWERFULBLACKWOMENgirls!
