Nice to see that The Good Shepherd wasn't completely forgotten.

I really hope Kate Winslet wins best actress. I know she's got some tough competition but this is the fifth time she's been nominated for an oscar.

I'm thrilled for Ryan Gosling!
Give me a break, best. Don't be so ridiculous.
THREE Best Song nominations for Dreamgirls?!?!?!? BLECH!
And what's with the Best Score nomination for Philip Glass (Notes on a Scandal)? I thought the general consensus was that it was pretty weak. I recall reading several complaints about it being a fairly weak point of the film. I didn't take that much notice of it, but...
I'm so happy that Abigail is nominated. But she is up against Jennifer Hudson, so I think I know how that might turn out.
I'm just saying that the Academy doesn't usually go for black films or musicals.
It's a fair statement. All you have to do is look at the track record.
And they LOVE "mob" movies. Again, it's a genre choice. Not mine, however.
Was Guillermo Del Toro eligible for Best Director for 'Pan's Labyrinth?' I'd have put him up long before it ever occurred to me to think of 'Dreamgirls.'
So aside from Dreamgirls, please list the black films or musicals that were not nominated that should have been.
You are essentially the first BWWer to cry racism and that's just foolish and tired.
Not enough people ranked "DREAMGIRLS" number 1 on their AMPAS ballot. 1/6 of all voters have to rank it number 1 or it doesn't make the BP lineup. It could have received cross the board 3s and it still would have been snubbed. Thats just how AMPAS works.
It isn't about people not liking musicals or black films.
MB---That's correct. If everyone picks it as #2 or #3, that isn't good enough for a nomination.
I didn't cry racism.
I cried "genre choice!" You can make it racist if you want.
But Jerby---No "black story" in the history of the entire Academy Awards has won Best Picture.
Ever. They're not into "black films" enough to vote one their top award.

OR, there are enough folks in the Academy who feel like I did - DREAMGIRLS just isn't that good.
Or that...
But I watched The Departed the other day. I've seen this "you shoot me, I shoot you" movie 80 times before, going back to the 1930s. Gimme a break. It's so overdone and cliche.
Again... a genre choice. I dislike mob movies, because they all feel like the same movie (with the exception of the Godfather).
Or again, not enough who thought it was good enough to be selected "number 1" on the ballot which you must have to secure the nomination.
Show me a "black film" that should have won Best Picture.
The ONLY example I can think of is The Color Purple vs Out of Africa, and as much as I love TCP, it's a valid debate on both sides.
And, wasn't Crash winning over Brokeback alllllll about the Academy wanting to award the "black film" over the "gay film"? That was definitely many people's complaint.
DREAMGIRLS got three song nominations ("Listen," "Love You I do," and "Patience"). Yay! We'll get to see Jennifer Hudson perform that night... unless they ask Beyonce to sing all the nominated songs this year.
I'm with you, DG. I'd generally classify myself as much more a fan of Musicals than Gangster films, but I much preferred The Departed (other than that horrid last shot) to Dreamgirls.
A nice congrats to Pat Field for being a RARE nominee in the Best Costume Design catagory with contemporary rags for THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Not a great film, but fabulous costumes. And it has been decades (!) since a contemporary film showed up in that catagory.
CAPNHOOK'S THOUGHTS:
1) Leo for BLOOD DIAMOND and rightfully so!
2) NO DREAMGIRLS OR BILL CONDON!?!?!?!?!!?!!?!?!?!!?!?!
3) YEAH! DREAMGIRLS getting all three nods for Song!
4) I predicted Leading, Supporting Actress, and Animated Film races 100% correct.
5) The fact that CLICK is an Oscar nominee makes me want to slit my wrists!
6) VOLVER was snubbed. I didn't particularly like the film, but oh well.
7) EVERYONE underestimated PAN'S LABYRINTH. BORAT should not get a Screenplay nod. Cohen should be nominated instead.
Well, Priscilla won that award in the 90s, but it is definitely AWESOME that Prada was remembered for Costumes!
True, but the costumes for PRISCILLA weren't exactly contemporary - they were sort of glam, Vegas, over the top - they were more in the style of a period film than contemporary day wear - which is what Field did for PRADA.
"The fact that CLICK is an Oscar nominee makes me want to slit my wrists!"
It was just for makeup, Hook.
Let's not make this "all about the black part," Jerby, you're WAY overreacting to my initial comment and trying to turn it into something FAR uglier than intended.
Stop it.
I'm just saying (one again) that musicals and black stories are "weak genres" in the eyes of the Academy. That's two strikes against Dreamgirls before it even gets out of the gate.
Perhaps they are weak or "dying genres" in general. They are rarely thought of as good enough to "join the prestige party."
Whereas... make the same old mob movie with big-name stars in it, and you'll get nominated for something, guaranteed.
I chalk it up to Hollywood fashion.
I'm sorry, but WHO kept going on about ""all about the black" part"? And WHO was overreacting? WHO?
Yeah.
