I don't know - but my jaw dropped. Mike Myers just looked at him not knowing what to say. He also said that "they have permission to shoot to kill" before he said what he said. But, I thought he said "George Bush Don't Care About Black People."

Guess no one else is watching! Although I personally don't mind it, I'm amazed at all the church/gospel music that is being performed. Oh...and I thought Tim McGraw sounded awful...(sorry, but this is a theater board, we have to give catty reviews right?)

I think he did use the word "hate". No idea who he was. but I'll bet we'll read all about him tomorrow! NBC people must have wanted to die!

The musical program was done by natives of New Orleans and/or performers with ties to the Big Easy. Gospel music - like jazz - has deep roots in the city, so it was very appropriate.

I think it was Kanye West.

You may be right. I just know my jaw dropped.

His name is Kayne West. He's a rapper, who is anti-war, anti-bush. His remark was absolutely unnessacary. This was a concert for people with no homes, who are struggling for their lives, and he goes off and attacks the president saying he doesn't care about black people. It didn't make sense to me.

It was Kanye West. I can't believe he said that! I am not saying he is wrong, I just can't believe he said it.

I do understand that gospel has roots in that area, I'm just surprised that they played so much of it on a "regular" TV show, being that some of it had SUCH a Christian slant to it... As I said, I don't mind, but I guess I'm thinking that it isn't quite "PC" and they might feel they were offending non-Christians and then people wouldn't donate money.....then again maybe I'm overthinking it!

Personally, I think Harry Connick Jr.'s and Wynton Marsalis's selections were absolutely perfect. (And I did love him trying to get his daughters to sing at the end, and the one was like "Oh Dad, don't make me!"

Thank you! I knew I recognized him, but I wasn't sure exactly who it was! To be honest, I first looked up because I thought "who is this person who is speaking so poorly on TV?'..(.although I am always amazed at how many actors speak so badly when doing live TV shows) Then I was just shocked at what came out of his mouth! And Mike Meyers face was priceless!

Kanye West's comments were disrespectful and harmful. No matter what his personal feelings are towards President Bush and the federal government's reaction to Hurricane Katrina, he certainly used the wrong forum - a national concert/telethon sponsored by the American Red Cross aimed at ALL Americans - to share them in. To say that the President "doesn't care about black people" is insidious and highly offensive. I hope that Mr. West is ashamed of himself and reprimanded severely.

Funny how in your mind that's what he said. Because I just checked on the DVR and what he said was, "George Bush doesn't care about Black people."

See what happens when people dare to open their mouths when they perceive injustice? Somebody else accuses them of saying something they didn't say. And those who feel implicated remind everybody that this "was neither the time nor the place."

If not now, when? If not Kanye, whom? The whole world is watching.

Namo, thanks for checking, because I knew I wasn't insane. Though I missed don't vs. doesn't, I did not think I heard the word "hate."

How much do you bet that this portion of the show does not air on the repeat broadcast on the West Coast?

I'll take the blame for putting the word "hate" out there.....to be absolutely honest I was so shocked by what he said, and was trying to find out who he was that I typed what I "thought" he said...which obviously was incorrect, however, I was watching it live and don't have the means to recheck it...

I respect his right to voice his opinion....but I question his doing it during this concert. It just didn't seem appropriate when the focus should have been on getting people to donate to the relief effort.

You got that right. But you know what, rappers are often given credit by bringing the news from the streets to the masses. I bet that's what Kanye (whose new album is GREAT, btw) felt he was doing by deviating from the script. There was also a big long speech before the misquoted line. He was obviously scared as hell, but he said what he felt he had to say.

I didn't see him say it.

I don't know if I would say it's the right or the wrong forum, although I don't know where else he would have the opportunity to say what he said, but I doubt it stopped anyone who really wanted to help from donating.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

The point of the Red Cross sponsored concert / telethon was to raise awareness of Katrina's impact and catastrophic damage, entertain with music performed by artists from the area, inform by using prepared statements from celebrities, and solicit donations for disaster relief. Mr. West's comments were ill chosen and inappropriate for the venue. I'm sure he is extremely frustrated with the chaotic situation in the Gulf Coast, as we all are. I truly wish that he had considered his remarks more carefully before making them. It is a shame to make this tragedy into a race issue. After all, we ALL need to take care of each other in this world.

Exactly. And given that he praised the Red Cross and mentioned them being overextended, I bet Kanye will encourage some people who might not have donated. After all, he will be having the number one album next week.

Talk about somebody FINALLY using the bully pulpit!

Addendum: I wasn't even picking on you for legitimately hearing it wrong, I was picking on junglered for repeating it, clearly junglered did not watch the show. But junglered NEEDS to believe that's what Kanye said. But he didn't.

I'll take the balme for "seconding" the hearing of the H word. Interesting how we perceive what we hear. I wasn't sure if he was shaking from anger or nervousness.
