Yeah, there'll be scores. Now that I've missed Grey's Anatomy and will have to now watch the Pacific airing, I suppose I'll start writing my critique now.
You aren't getting kicked out of the clique that easily Tiff.

How fast id Grey's Anatomy? Gosh. You just said it started.
What could I do TO get kicked out? I'm really working on it here.

Ok! I voted! Happy?
I'm really scared to see who gets kicked out this round...
Good luck to everyone!
My critique will be up in 10 minutes. I'm trying to smother the gushing and make it more balanced.

Overall thoughts – FINALLY, I do believe this is one of our – if not THE – best round yet. Thank you, thank you, and thank you. I admit, I was worried after last week, that we were wasting our time and that the quality and interest was faltering. But you guys have done wonderfully, and I’m really proud of all of you. (By the way, the word of the day is apparently “angst” – sorry for the overuse.)

You know I’ve been your biggest fan since day 1, even though I give you a hard time about your lower vibrato (which, I have on reliable authority, pisses you off and I’m sorry for that
). So you’ll be pleased to hear that overall, I think this was one of your best weeks yet. Your vibrato was much more suitable for these songs and I thought your voice was fantastic, as usual. I liked “Across The Universe” – I prefer Fiona’s version to the Beatles, and I think while you could have been a smidge more emotional, you were appropriately apathetic, sorrowful and haunting. Channelling Fiona very well. (I never understood why the Beatles sound so happy while singing it!) As for “Insensitive”, I have to admit I’m not huge on Jann Arden and I was a bit sceptical, but you’ve actually made me like this song. Your voice was perfect for it, you made it your own, and you seemed more “into it” than for “Across The Universe”. I especially liked the second half. What I’d love to see next week is a belty show-stopper. And maybe something more upbeat than the ballads. You’re good at ballads. Let’s see what else you’ve got. (But don’t let that stop you from doing “One” now, y’hear?) Well done.

Dawg, dawg, dawg. Remember way back when, when you didn’t make it past the first round and I implored that you be voted in as the Wild Card, and you were? And I said, mark my words; you’ll be the next Clay Aiken story? (Except straight.) Remember that? Wasn’t I right? So, Mr. Demoralized “This Is An Obligation More Than Fun Now”, I hate to break it to you. This was your best week yet, and I foresee you sticking around at least for another round. Sorry. Do a bad job next time you want to get out of this obligation. I’m so glad you chose this song. While you didn’t angst it as much as the Gallaghers do, you are simply a fantastic tenor. (Just watch out about the volume of the lower notes, which got a bit lost. But this is nitpicking.) This was iPod-worthy, truly. As for “Summer of ‘69”, I was expecting something terrible (because it’s not my favourite Bryan song, it wasn’t your first choice, and you kept apologizing in advance) but I thought it was a great rendition, not even considering your health issues. (One note, I wish you’d upped your vocal volume and quieted the accompaniment a bit because at times you were a bit drowned out.) So stop apologizing – you’re singing Canadian, you aren’t being Canadian!
Both sounded almost like professional recordings. You were so worried about sounding bad this week since you’re sick. If this is how you sound when you’re ill I hope you get hit by a car next week – then you’ll be on fire! (Figuratively speaking for this contest; I’m not wishing a gasoline-ignited accident. Unless you let me down next week.)

Okay. I know you were a bit rushed for these ones since, poor you, you HAD to go to London. “On My Own”. One of my (over-done, but still) favourite songs, and made me cry like a baby when I saw Les Mis (only time I’ve ever cried in the theatre, I think). Here’s what I think. Your vocals were strained, and it's unfortunate that your throat's not cooperating now. It sounds like it could be a bootleg recording of a show. This is good and bad; what I’ve liked about you all along is that you become the person you’re singing, and you put so much emotion into your recordings. If you were on stage IN the show, this is the right amount of angst. As a stand-alone recording, it was over-done. It started off subdued enough, and then suddenly, you tore it apart. Again, good within the context of the show if we were watching you; a bit much if we’re just listening to it. Some of the higher parts cracked because of how much you were smacking it. Reel it in a bit. “Uninvited” was a savvy, contrasting choice. Vocally, it didn’t really do anything for me. I thought you started off shaky, and a bit shrill at times, especially the higher parts. On the plus side, you were appropriately angsty and tortured, which was the best part of this rendition, especially as the song progressed. Overall, just restrain your voice a bit more so you don’t sound shrill and screamy, and keep the emotion…just don’t overdo it. Try something upbeat and more subdued next week.

Dude. I don’t know what to say anymore. I’m like a broken record. What more can I add? Another good performance. Again. Solid vocals. Again. Professional and polished. Again. Consistently good. Again. So all I can comment on are your song choices. I’m a huge Elton fan and I have to admit to being a bit disappointed that you chose “The One” because there are so many others that I think are more engaging and I think you could’ve done equally well. You sang it fine, and your sustained notes are simply glorious, it’s just that the song bores me. I know you were really limited in your karaoke options for Our Lady Peace, so I won’t fault you on going with “Somewhere Out There”, which isn’t a personal favourite either. I’m just happy to see OLP represented at all! There were a couple of flat notes, but I think your voice sounded particularly polished here (more so than Raine Maida!). You really soar in the chorus. I don’t know what else to add. I hope next week, you choose a song that’s totally uncharacteristic to what we’ve heard so far. You’re always good. Great, even. But I’m waiting for that one song that will put you on a different level.
What do you people want from me?? To pull monkeys and rainbows out of my ass?
OK so I am going to listen and put everything in one post...this feels weird. And I didnt read anything so...here goes
Kerrie
Across the universe- You are so so good. It was nice hearing lower stuff again, and your voice fit it so well. You continue to show that it doesn't need to be a huge song to be amazing. That said, while you were amazing and I loved it...I would like a better song choice next time that shows off your range more.
Insensitive-I really like this song. And you did it very well. But it isn't anywhere near my favorites of yours by any means. There were parts where I just didn't like it as much as I thought i would maybe it was the tone of your voice a couple notes? I am not quite sure it just wasn't your best but it was still good.
Spidey
Don't Look Back In Anger-Another song and artist I really like. And loved your version!! I just like everything you did with it, it is actually among my favorites of stuff you have done. You had the performance of it too and it was good
Summer of '69-If yo uhad to do a song by him, i am so glad you picked this one. And I loved this too. I think it helps that it sounds like a professional recording, we can really hear you and it is phenominal. You showed off range, and it was up to what i expected for this week.
Kitz
On my oown- We all said if you did this you had to do it amazingly. It is very overdone. I am disappointed you didn't have more time to record it. I am ignoring the cutty audio. That said...I loved it. I know you could have done better, but I really liked this. As usual, you put emotion into it and that just makes so much more of a difference. This song was good to show off your voice, the higher notes do sound a little strained, but all in all I enjoyed it more than I thought I would because of the song it was!
Uninvited-now I LOVE this song. But it was just eh. Parts of that were not your fault, like the karaoke backing voice annoyed me. Again I know if you had more time it would have been better. You have emotion you sound like you mean it which I LOVE. I thought it was good but at this level I expect more
Jerby
The One-ok so you go and pick another song and artist I love. And oh...my...god. I am seriously TRYING to find something wrong with it I can't. You sing it so sensually like it should be done, you just make me want to...well do dirty things to you that I shouldn't think about. You are still that good. Are you sure you couldn't switch just for one night? This was what I expected for this level...you made me stop everything I was doing and listen to you sing. You showed off your range well also. Congrats
Somewhere Out There-another song I love. I remember downloading it years ago. For what I thought about it see above. The only thing was like twice a note sounded like it wasn't held for the full time it should have. But other than that...just read above.
It wasn't that i was nicer this week, it is that they were all better. Good luck all!
Nicely done, Cait!
And jrb, showing a bit of ass has NEVER hurt a contestant in their ratings!
Here's the deal. If I make it through, I am going to choose the 3 songs within y'alls themes that I want to sing and that I think will show me off the best. I'm not here to impress people or shoot stars out my butt. An artist can not strive to top themselves for the audience's sake. They can only strive to create the greatest work possible. I'm sorry if that sounds bitchy but I find the judge critiques to be extremely disingenious.
Yeah! the whole well you were amazing all along we want more thing...I never got that. Sometimes you are at a point where it is kind of hard to top yourself because you are bringing all you can the entire time...
Thank you. Exactly my feeling. I don't think I am the greatest singer in the world or flawless. I think the others singer here ROCK. But, if I have to "top" myself to get respect here, then I guess I won't have respect. Because I can not work that way.
Are you kidding me? You're one of the only contestants so far that I've given consistently given good critiques to and I haven't sugarcoated anything. And if the worst I can tell you is "You set the bar so high because of the good quality of your performances, that you've got to keep topping yourself"...if that's considered a lack of respect, then I've really got nothing more to add, except perhaps instead of pulling out rainbows and monkeys, you might want to start with the stick.
And I'm sorry if that sounds bitchy, but I complained about your song choices, not your voice. So there's nothing disingenuous here.
I could see how you might see the critiques that way. I don't know if that was really what they were implying, but expectations are always play a huge part in this type of judging.
I agree that the critique seems to be more of your song choices than anything else. I had never heard of either song. (Not that I know popular music enough to expect to.)
It is as hard to judge this stuff at this point as it is to perform it. I think they were both trying to give you credit while also trying to say why they were not "blown away."
And isn't this supposed to be a takeoff of the tv "Idol'? All the judges are doing is trying to copy their format.
Well, then I'm not going to ever blow them away--and fine. I just don't care if I do. I don't have a clue how they think a U2 or Good Charlotte song is going to give them ANYthing they haven't heard already. The Sondheim--maybe. But probably not.
If it was good, then it should be judged as good. If it wasn't good, tell me why. But don't tell me I was so freaking good--and that was boring. And if my song choices gave me 3rd place and not other factors, then I find that ridiculous. Even the slavish AI singers don't have to appease the whims and delights of Simon, Paula, and Randy.
And, Jane, you better believe I would say the same thing to Simon, Paula, and Randy.
Ok wow, I'm not sure what I just walked into.
Very often the AI idols say that singers are good but aren't "topping" themselves. Or that they expect more out of certain singers.
They always say - well, Randy does - that the competition is getting fierce, and it is time to step up. If the other singers are, but you've reached your limit, then you lose.
Having said that, I am speaking generally. I haven't heard your clips for a while.
I think (and this is just how I read it) you were great. But they honestly felt Kerrie and Spidey were better. Comparing the critiques it was how I saw it.
I have never been the biggest fan of the songs in general.
I know some people just prefer different things. Some people just prefer certain tones over others. Or something, I don't know.
jerby-you have esp. while I was just reading the last few posts, I thought that you might be taking the role of the contestant who tells Simon off on the show.
