I've been reading The Probable Future by Alice Hoffman on the plane (and I'm still reading it!). Overall, it's pretty good. It has a magical/witch/folklore kind of vibe; but it's set in present day Boston. I like it.

My friend has read The Eight and said, for the most part, that it was dreadfully boring and dragged on for 600 pages... hope that helps.
