I loved the film in the movie theatre, but when I watched it again on dvd, I thought it was really unfulfilling. The ending is too pat - Anne Hathaway's character arc weak, and frankly I wanted her to be a little smarter. It was a big let down that she left that fabulous world (and unrealistic that she wouldn't have worked the contacts she made to land a better gig) with the simple admission: "I screwed up."
Frankly, the author of the novel who "lived" the story was a lot more savvy. She wrote a book promptly propelling her to an equal footing with "Mirada Priestly."
And I hated her friends. Especially Tracie Thoms - eager to take the 1900 dollar hand bag but uber judgemental of Andi's "ethic."
Please.
Totally agree, MB.
Clumsy: GO WATCH BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN!!!!!!!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!
I pretty much agree with what everyone else said.
Anytime Hathaway's character is doing stuff for the magazine (ie, in scenes with Streep, Blunt, Tucci), the film is really fun.
All the other moments (ie, scenes with her boyfriend, friends) are kinda blah.
But overall is it really fun and sharp.
Costumes, costumes, costumes!
I just liked it for all the outfits, in all honesty. Makes me wish I was more stylish.
Actually- I enjoyed it for more than just the clothing. Its a fun movie.
A Major disappointment. I'd heard so much about this film when I eventually saw it I found it nothing more than a teenage girl chick flick honoured witha performance by Meryl Streep. Similar to The Princess Diaries really.

I saw it. Streep does the Queen Bitch thing very well.
However, upon walking out of the theater, I promptly forgot about it. I definitely wouldn't spend $15-20 on the DVD, or even $3 on the rental. It was far from awful, but to me, it was just one of those movies where you watch it and don't feel a need to see it again. A sweet film for an afternoon, but nothing to write home about, either.
I saw it the weekend it came out in theaters. turns out the most interesting thing that was going on in the theater at the time were the pretty colored lights leading down the stairs on either side of the theater.
I thought it was dreadfully mediocre. Very highly stylized, but not funny. The characters didn't have as much depth as they did in the book, and most of the acting performances felt false to me. Streep was good, there's no doubt about that, but I didn't think that she alone could bring the film up to "Top 10 lists". I was kind of bored by it, honestly. on par with other dull comedies of the year, in my opinion.
It's like an episode of SEX AND THE CITY stretched out to 2+ hours, if that's your sort of thing. That its getting so much awards buzz is living proof how totally sucky films this year were.
About an hour into it now - I don't see that Streep is so amazing, it seems like she's really downplaying the character. Perhaps because I've worked for that person in various incarnations, she's not seeming all that intimidating or horrible. As written in the book, she's terrifying.
Hathaway is adorable, I'm enjoying everyone's performances. Mostly, I'm trying to figure out how to gain 8 inches in height so I can wear gorgeous clothes and do them justice.

I found this movie to be very enjoyable, not a masterpiece but a lot of fun.

I enjoyed it for what it was, but I didn't think Meryl was THAT good. I agree that there were moments of brilliance, but as a whole, I felt her character was a bit one-note and the attempt to make give her depth really felt flat.
I'm surprised so many people didn't like Anne Hathaway more. I felt she was better than Emily Blunt who was good for comic relief, but again...one-note. I thought Hathaway made her character incredibly charming, though I agree that I wish the character was written and portrayed a bit smarter to be on equal footing to Miranda. When Miranda told her that Anne's character reminded Miranda of herself, I was wondering "why? All she did was try to warn you..."
ITA about the scenes with her friends and bf were INCREDIBLY weak. I really think those parts could've been done so much better. Also, Simon Baker was incredibly creepy and unattractive.
Yes, Streep is God and all that, but I also thought Anne Hathaway did very well. Her character is a bit underwritten, but it is no small thing to share the screen with Meryl (especially Meryl in a showy part)and not become invisible.
The kid held her own.
Hathaway is impressing me quite a bit more than Streep in this particular film. I think people get blinded by STREEP!!! and can't judge her performances objectively anymore.
BTW, if Hathaway is a size 6, I'm a 22.
The girl who played Emily was awesome. And of course La Streep ruled.
The hotel "divorce" scene - I hate to say this, and flame away, but Streep's performance in this scene seems forced.
ETA: Hathaway's character being all sympathetic to Streep's at the end is completely unbelievable, if Stockholm Syndrome-ish.

I've only recently read the book, and enjoyed it far more than I ever expected to. The DVD is released here in the UK on Monday, and it's the first film I'll have rented from Blocbuster in a long while...
The film is pablum compared to the book.
I didn't care for the film. Hated the ending.
The book had a lot of weak points too though - neither the book nor the movie covered Andie's personal life concisely or interestingly.

"The film is pablum compared to the book." Lol! Pablum? Thought I. I had to go to the dictionary for that one, I've stored it in a reference frame, and intend to make good use of it: - )
I agree with you, Tiff.
However, the descriptions/scenes in the book of/with Miranda made me feel nauseous and gave me heart palpitations - she was truly cold and borderline. It brought me back to some of my less delightful jobs. I felt none of that at all watching the film.

I am excited for THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA II: WHEN THEY ALL GREW UP, with Betty Buckley and Rath.
On a serious note, I thought Streep did a great job, but when I started watching I didn't quite get all the fuss. She was extremely consistent throughout the movie - and let the lines work for themselves. It's nice she didn't play the over-raging bitch, though, and her "that's all" moments were fantastic.
The red-head. I thought she was very good.
And the friends annoyed me.
Newsflash: not all bat**** employers in showbiz are actors.
I hate to be the "the book was so much better" person, but that's exactly how I felt. Movie Miranda was way too nice. Movie Andy was not as completely ruled by Miranda. Book Andy had NO personal life because Miranda was her life. Movie Andy had time to spend with her boyfriend. Movie Andy never had the big breakdown moment. Her life was not completely devastated by her decision to leave Miranda just days before the big "one year" mark. And mostly, Movie Andy never got the satisfaction of walking back into the same publishing building as a writer and being completely ignored by the doorman who used to make her sing! (I soooo wish they would have kept that in the story when it translated it to film!)

I don't know. It was a nice movie. I love Meryl Streep and the costumes were fabulous...but the ending really bothered me. The fact that she just walked away from everything that was going to help her achieve her dreams and was all, "Oh...look at that. Oops". And also that her boyfriend got pissed at her for just trying to be a writer.
But another thing, who else thinks that Anne Hathaway is incredibly beautiful? I can't not look at her whenever she's on screen.
