Most grownups realize that YOU are responsible for YOUR behavior. If you ask an abuser "Why do you beat your wife?" He will never say "Well, the truth of it is, I am a controlling bastard with an awful temper and I just want to slap her around sometime!"

He WILL say (Like Javero does) "Well, if she just wouldn't
But the truth of the matter is, NO ONE CAN MAKE YOU beat them. You choose to be abusive. The first step to controlling this unacceptable behavior is owning up to it.

unless of course you buy way too much house or run your car making business or bank into the ground and then it becomes the government's responsibility to save you and the job of responsible people to pay for your irresponsibility.

Joe--you are completely off base. I'm a card-carrying Libertarian. Allow me to share a relevant section of the Libertarian Party platform. The text of section 1 follows.

Section 1.0 Individuals should be free to make choices for themselves and to accept responsibility for the consequences of the choices they make. No individual, group, or government may initiate force against any other individual, group, or government. Our support of an individual's right to make choices in life does not mean that we necessarily approve or disapprove of those choices.

Equality comes at a price. Initiation of force is just that irrespective of gender. My entire argument in the earlier post was premised upon a female striking a male first. It was a general example because I don't know the particulars of Rihanna and Chris' violent confrontation.

When one initiates force, one must be prepared to suffer the consequences regardless of the genitalia of the aggressor. In other words, you strike another person you've given that person license to beat your azz down.

In the past, I was a gun owner as well. My mantra was "cross the plane of a door or window and you're going out on a cooling board". Self-defense is a basic instinct.

If Chris was the aggressor, I wish Rihanna had at her disposal an instrument and the resolve to put him out of his muthafriggin' misery "permanently".

Unless a woman is threatening a man's life with a gun, knife, or other instrumentality, or is 300 pounds to his 125 and is pummeling him beyond recognition, it is inappropriate for him to strike her, even if she slaps or hits him first.

Joe—What I'm not going to do is come on here with the highbrow attitude that those who differ in opinion from me are somehow morons or degenerates deserving incarceration. To me, it provides a false sense of security to assume that all the bad guys (and gals) are safely locked away and overlooks the biological reasons why many men are aggressors.

Everyone does not play by the same set of rules. Dismiss the maxim at your own peril.

I don't claim to be an expert on battered-woman syndrome. However, I'll share with you that I've witnessed several women rumored to be in abusive relationships provoke their husbands/companions to attack them in public simply to prompt the intervention of another potential abuser that turns them on. I worry that Rihanna could bounce from fist to fist if she doesn't get counseling.

Finally, the national LP party is not a monolith comprised of a bunch of sheep who march in lock-step with some party leader. There are varying positions on a host of issues which have generated considerable internal debate since the party's inception. I'm happy to learn of your interest in LP principles. I'll leave you with section 1.3 of the national platform.

1.3 Personal Relationships
Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the rights of individuals by government, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships.

Cheers!

If someone slaps you, you have a choice. You can slap (or punch, or kick) back, or you can go for options that don't involve more violence - restraint, walking away, etc. The fact that someone slaps you doesn't create a justification for delivering a beatdown in exchange. It just...gives you that choice, as an independent moral actor. To make things worse, or to make them better. Chris Brown obviously made his choice, and he's responsible for it.

Chris Brown charged with assault, making criminal threats

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

They just reported on tv that Rhianna went back to him and they are now a couple again. If this is true, she has very very serious self esteem issues.

There's internet rumours going around that they are engaged/married... Obviously not the most reliable source, but PerezHilton.com has a statement of sorts from Rihanna's "people".

What can I say, I'm a sucker for sleezy celeb gossip when I'm home sick. what can you do?

How do not understand how the charges are not for attempted murder. He is one sick dude and Rhianna should be shunned if she is back with him.

If she's back with that animal, then any future injuries will be entirely her fault.
