After all the hub-bub over Leno leaving...it seems as if NBC *knew* it wasn't his "final" show the last time around. I hope Jimmy Fallon's first guest is Conan O'Brien.

Bye Jay, thanks for all the… um…
Thanks for the Hugh Grant interview, I guess.
Bye, Jay.
His various segments like Jaywalking and Headlines could be fun.
I'll miss him.

I'll miss your casual and oblivious homophobia.
Aw, where will I get my Late Night homophobia from now? Rats!
Who's Gonna Miss His Gay Jokes?
That video just now was hysterical!
Watch your back, Fallon!!!!!! Greenblatt may be that desperate after losing Thursday Night Football to CBS.
Ah I wondered if anyone would bring up his Ryan Philippe gay soap face "brilliance." His retirement couldn't happen fast enough.
I guess I didn't watch enough to notice the homophobia. I know he's big with "Middle America" so I shouldn't be surprised. Oh, well.
wow, Marc Shaiman and cast of thousands!
To those offended by his jokes lighten up. He joked about everyone
If he is such a raging homophobe, how come Shaiman appeared?

Ain't no one used the word raging but you, so be gone. Take your big bag of bullsh*t elsewhere. Not today. Sit down.
Wow, he started to ugly-cry.
When Billy Crystal was doing his monologue, I couldn't help but wish that he were taking over instead of Fallon. I do like Fallon...but Crystal is one of the final comedians who has that classic "presenter's charm." I hope he gets to host the Oscars for a 20th time.
I agree about Crystal. And he looks great too!
Jay crying and trying not to was a little awkward.
I honestly think his homophobia was of the most benign sort. I don't think he was homophobic at all, but he didn't seem to realize when he pulled a joke that, for me, crossed the line (albeit just a little bit.) I think if he had said things like the gay soap face with more of a knowing wink I would find it less homophobic.
Still I love Jimmy, and yet one night when I was drunk I sent him an angry email about how there were three gay prison rape jokes on his show that night. I never would have done that sober, but I did get an oddly nice reply (probably from one of his interns...)
I can't believe I'm defending Jay Leno. I'm team Letterman all the way and I find Leno's brand of comedy bland and pedestrian. And, yes, the casual homophobia could make me cringe, but it's clearly a generational thing -- Letterman has done similar things on his show over the years.
But I think the way in which Leno was vilified during Conan's brief tenure at the Tonight Show was ridiculous. It's a ****ing a business and sometimes ruthless decisions have to be made. NBC ****ed up, not Leno. He clearly did not want to leave five years ago and NBC was desperate to hold on to the both of them, but at the end of the day the gamble they tried was an abysmal failure. People didn't want to see Leno in primetime and Conan's quirky, cerebral outsider humor was an comfortable fit for The Tonight Show and its demo. He's clearly a much better fit for TBS where he can be himself and he seems much happier there, too. And Leno returned to where he belonged -- at the boring, middle of the road, widely popular Tonight Show and then continued to dominate the ratings and make the Tonight Show a highly profitable franchise.
Fallon seems much more suitable for the role. Sure, he's younger and hipper and taps into social media and dances with JT etc. But at heart he's a far warmer and sincere comedian than Conan ever could be and I think that will probably play better than Conan did at 11:35 on NBC.
That being said, you couldn't pay me to go see Jay Leno's standup. Did anyone see Letterman? Did he say anything about Jay's last show?

Jimmy Fallon is a fabulous successor and he will thrive in this new time slot.

If you cannot take the heat etc. You can rip the church and everything else in creation but if someone tells a gay joke the world stops spinning. Get a grip.
If I offended you my humblest apologies. Guaranteed at least a few of the many helped by Leno over the years has been gay. Doubt he asked sexual preference when he was helping people.

It'll be interesting how Fallon does as I think he will do well as will Seth Myers when he takes over Late Night, I'm curious to see whether Letterman will announce his retirement as his contract for The Late Show expires next year and he's managed to beat Carson's record for longest running late night host and has done 21 years on CBS but I think until CBS finds a replacement, he'll stay put,
I don't usually watch the 11:30 talk shows but if I do, I watch Leno. I never heard a homophobic comment from him. I laugh at his jokes. I never heard anything funny come from Letterman.
However, I totally understand if anyone doesn't want to watch a person on tv. I have plenty of them who turn my stomach.
this is a case of separating the artist from the art. Letterman is more my type as a person, but Leno's jokes are funnier.

Are you feeling a bit like Panti, Phyllis, Mildred et al? Of that this is reminding me.
I DVRed the show because I need to see for myself that our long national milquetoast is over.
I'm going to miss how Leno made me miss Johnny Carson.
Never got Leno' bland sense of humor. I always found his jokes pedestrian at best- he was very milquetoast. Which I guess is why he was so popular in "Middle America."
Team Letterman here 100%.

Some of Jay's "reading headlines and ads in the newspaper" had me on the floor laughing!

"Headlines" was a blatant rip-off of Letterman's "Small Town News", which he started doing on his daytime talk show in the 1980's.
