Rachel Maddow's interesting takedown
Journalism. It's so rare in this country, it's surprising when it occurs.
Christie “knew this was bullsh!t” and “obviously there’s been a coverup,” N.J. ex-gov tells Salon.
Christie's Reign of Terror
Rachel Maddow has always been brilliant. Her show is appointment TV in our house.
Her work on this particular case has been stellar- I remember when she was the only one seriously reporting on this story as it was developing. I hope she keeps it up.
From the article Carlos posted:
So you have interference with interstate commerce. There’s a lot of crimes committed here. And the arrogance of those emails goes beyond the pale. The governor should just be totally destroyed over that kind of arrogance, directed to the citizens of the state where he is the leading figure — the governor. It’s just sad — sad and pathetic — that people thought, obviously, that this is what the governor would want.
Do you believe that the governor directly instructed that these lanes be shut down?
No. But at the very least, the least that could have happened is he created this climate about – that he has: We destroy our enemies. Alleged enemies. In other words, anybody that … [hasn’t] agreed with us 100 percent is an enemy, and has to be stamped out.
This climate of fear, this reign of terror has to — he has to take responsibility for it.
I mean, you read the story about the head of the firemen’s union, who criticized the governor very mildly on a radio show. And former Sen. Baroni, who was involved in this incident, called him up and says, “Hey, the governor wants me to call you. He heard you on the radio last night. And his message is, ‘Go **** yourself for what you said.’” Now, that’s saying to Baroni that this kind of conduct is the way that we conduct ourselves against somebody who doesn’t agree with us. So Baroni took it to another step …
This has been an ongoing part of the administration: the way they attack anybody who doesn’t agree with them, on policy or anything else.
These two passages highlight what I've been saying. If he didn't know this was happening he is still guilty of creating that sort of environment.
Jon Stewart explains how you do it...
54% of New jerseyans believe Christie was lying when he said he didn't know.
56% believe he should resign if it's proven.
This according to a Rasmussen poll, which usually skews to the conservative side.
56% in NJ Think Christie Should Resign If He Knew About Fort Lee Retaliation
Eugene Robinson of The Washington Post weighs in with his Op-Ed piece.
All along, Christie had ridiculed the suggestion that there was any political motivation in the lane closures. On Thursday, faced with proof to the contrary, he apologized and said he had been “betrayed” by staff members and associates he believed he could trust. “I am embarrassed and humiliated by the conduct of some of the people on my team,” he said.
Christie announced that he has fired Kelly — not because she helped create a maddening and dangerous situation for the people of Fort Lee but because she lied when Christie asked all the members of his senior staff whether they had any involvement in the affair.
That was the central message of Christie’s nearly two-hour performance before reporters: I was betrayed by people I trusted. I’m the victim here.
The whole episode “makes me ask .?.?. what did I do wrong to have these folks think it was okay to lie to me,” Christie said. He described his principal emotion as “sadness” at the betrayals by associates to whom he had shown loyalty — and from whom he expected loyalty in return.
The governor accepted full responsibility but not an ounce of blame. “Politics ain’t beanbag,” he said, but “that’s very, very different than saying that, you know, someone’s a bully.”
But is it really all that different? Christie maintained that he never sought the endorsement of Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich — never even met him, actually — and therefore had no reason to want him punished. What, then, would make his deputy chief of staff and several of his closest political associates think otherwise?
If Christie is truly in the mood for soul-searching, asking how his aides could tell him such lies should be secondary. The more urgent question is what Christie might have said or done to make these loyal lieutenants conclude it would be appropriate — and a lot of fun — to torment the people of Fort Lee because of the mayor’s refusal to pledge fealty.
GET CHRISTIE, LOVE!
PRICELESS!
^ One fart and the bridge comes a-tumbin' down and a mass extermination of Jersey residents.
Didn't the Judds sing about how gov' can block a bridge?

Can someone please photoshop that sketch of Christie onto Miley's wrecking ball?
P.S. Hi, Wynbish! You have been missed!
Thanks. Visiting family over the holidays, then getting caught up on work has filled a lot of my time. I'm sure I missed some craziness, but surely, more will come. C'est la vie.
So, Christie orchestrated a blockage on a bridge that could rival his arteries after eating at Wendy's?
^^^ HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Oh...that's almost as rich as the pork belly ramen soup I had for lunch. Oh...good times.

On the morning of the fourth day of closures that snarled traffic leading to the George Washington bridge last September — the result of what New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said was political retribution by his staff — the executive director of the port authority that controls the bridge sent a scathing, early-morning email to top staff and board members.
In an email stamped 7:44 a.m., Patrick Foye slammed the closures and said he was calling for the lanes to be opened as soon as possible. Foye called the decision to close access roads in Fort Lee, N.J., “hasty and ill-advised” and said it “violated Federal Law and the laws of both States.”
“I will get to the bottom of this abusive decision which violates everything this agency stands for; I intend to learn how PA [port authority] process was wrongfully subverted and the public interest damaged to say nothing of the credibility of this agency,” Foye wrote.
“This hasty and ill-advised decision has resulted in delays to emergency vehicles. I pray that no life has been lost or trip of a hospital- or hospice-bound patient delayed,” Foye wrote.

At the very least he's lying about when he found out about all this. David Wildstein seems very anxious to take immunity. I wonder what he has to say.
Days after the apologia, impeachment is on the table.

I'm having a really hard time believing he had absolutely no idea that this was going on.
