"The difference between her and Madonna is that when Madonna started she didnt jump out announcing 'Hey Gays im here', the gay market found Madonna. Gaga has used gay rights etc as a selling tool for career......and the gay's have played straight in to it."

Oh songanddanceman it's these comments that crack me up. Lady Gaga at least puts her money where her mouth is and is politically active. She was very outspoken about getting DADT repealed here...even organizing a rally against it. It's crazy to me that Madonna fans are talking about Lady Gaga exploiting the gay community. That's the pot calling the kettle black.

The production is great (thank you, RedOne), it's got a beautiful message, it's totally cheesy, and fierce as hell. It's exactly what the younger generation needs right now. Totally rad.

i like gaga and M. but WHY OH WHY does Gaga dip into the Madonna pool so much??? from looks, to outfits, to bass lines, to verses, to melodies, videos ...enough is enough.

can't she be inspired by other things???

Born this Way is Express yourself and Vogue...down to the syncopated rap-syllable by syllable.

tepid. not a great song either.

TIP: Madonna's Vogue lyrics had bi and gay in the rap.

Disney made her remove it because it was linked to Dick Tracy and made her change it.

---------

MADONNA's HARD CANDY is actually fun and listenable now years later
(was she ahead of her time?)

She's NOT ME
Miles Away
Beat Goes On
Heartbeat
Give It To Me
Dance 2Night

all fun songs----good vibes good vibes

Have you been living on a different planet for 25 years? Madonna has always stuck up for gay rights, she just doesnt use it so much to sell records. The woman has been suporting gay rights since the early 80s, she grew up around gay people, worked with them etc even before she was famous, had a link to the gay community. The money she has donated, organisations shes given money too, appeals she has done.

Yes Gaga was vocal about DADT.....so was 90 percent of the rest of celeb land.

As for her never having the balls to rights songs about sexulaity, how about In This Life, Why's it so Hard?
Those songs however are more personal songs written from the heart, not 'Come on all you gays, lets all be united and buy my records' lol

songanddance, other than this song, when has Gaga ever used gay rights to sell a song. None of her past songs were overtly pro-gay like this one, so I don't see where that point comes from.

And while there were celebrities that were outspoken as DADT, I can't think of any that put in nearly as much effort and energy to get it repealed as Gaga.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

So when Madonna does it it's because she is sticking up for gay rights but when Lady Gaga does it it's pandering to the gay audience to sell albums and and concert tickets. Whatever. As usual you don't make any sense.

Erik you can insult me all you want if it makes you feel better.

You read part of what i put then go on the defensive. I said when Madonna has done it its not done with a load of publicity around her, half of the time we dont see what she does. With Gaga its all very much public. And whilst i agree she did great with DADT so did many many others. As much as i hate the guy i think Perezz Hilton was one of the most outspoken about it, same with Ellen.

The end of the day Gaga if you love her or hate her it can't be denied she has played the gay market, the pink pound perfectly. I read an article about her a few months ago when she was doing all the DADT publicity and it was talking with people she grew up with right before she broke in to the industry, all said she never showed any intrest in gay rights or any kind of political agenda at all, that kinda summed it up for me, pretty much the same as her outrageous costumes etc expressing who she is and that shes a work of art, that was not the case before she became a star.

Don't get me wrong i don't hate the woman, she has a wonderful voice, puts on a great show and a great act and has some pretty good songs (not the new one though), i just don't like the fact that people seem to think shes the second coming, breaking new ground etc, all she is doing retreading the path that was paved out by Madonna, Cher etc many years before. I would be more in to her if her career up to this point was not so joined to Madonna's and others, if she stepped away and found her own identity, because just because she wears a dress made of meat does not mean she has shown any originality at all.

But hey, what do i know 'As usual i don't make any sense'

Her Alejandro music video comes to mind actually. Didn't she state that the video was about gay rights and DADT, even though the song had nothing to do with any of those topics?

Right

"I said when Madonna has done it its not done with a load of publicity around her"

HA!

I hope from now on Lady Gaga is less public in her support of equality. We certainly don't need celebrities like her to be vocal of our cause, even though we complain that not enough people ARE vocal about the cause.

Like I said before...the kids in my high school gay straight alliance were so excited about this song. With all the bullying that these kids face everyday I think it's kind of daft to think this message is a bad thing.

Do you all think this is the first song to come out and talk about gay rights?
Good lord, music must really be getting lost where you come from.

And if Gaga was genuine about gay rights i would be very happy that she represents us in public, however i don't think she is. Im sure she loves 'the gays' and how much they spend on her, and im sure she can say now that she has gay friends, but nobody will ever convince me that she has just not used the issues to get to the all important gay market.

"Do you all think this is the first song to come out and talk about gay rights?"

No. And who cares? What does that have to do anything? And now that I know Lady Gaga isn't genuine like Madonna is, I too hope that she stops spreading a pro gay message around the world. Kids these days should only hear messages like that from people who are genuine...like Madonna.

If Lady Gaga cared about the gays at all, she wouldn't be teaming up with anti-gay Target stores.

But then again, they also hired Ricky Martin... They must be desperate for our money.

I look at it this way...Both of them support gay rights. They do it differently. Gaga may be more visible but Madonna has always supported the gay community and we have known that from day one. She has also recorded songs aimed at the gay community. She was one of the first celebrities behind AIDS causes back in the 80's. I say as long as they really care about the causes they support, good for them.

Lady GaGa vs Madonna on gay rights may be the silliest debate I've ever seen. I think they've both done incredible things for the gay community.

However, just one of those two ladies made VIP seats available to their first US headlining tour to people who couldn't afford them, as long as they volunteered for glbt youth homelessness prevention organizations. (Hint: her name rhymes with "Yay yay rah rah" and not "vadge.")

How dare she, right Kad???

songanddanceman2, I love you, but we get it: you have blinders on when it comes to Madonna and there's nothing that can be done about that. Perhaps it's time to set aside the binary way of thinking and realize it doesn't have to be a matter of either liking Madonna or Lady Gaga.

I feel bad that many male homosexualists of a certain age feel that the success of Gaga is in some way an affront to the history of Madonna (who for some reason is acting as a stand-in for their younger selves). I think it's great that there's a sparkingly creative performer (who writes her own songs and sings them live) who is relevant to young people. It's 28 years later and they need somebody closer to their own age cohort and experience.

I don't get the either/or argument either.

I like Madonna (until Ray of Light, then I prefer to pretend that she just retired instead of watching her slow desperate descent into self parody and oblivion) and I also like Gaga.

Why must I choose?

And what is this contest metality about who stands up more for gay rights all about? I mean, is there like a prize or something?

Diva- After seeing how this board responded to the whole Target debacle when it first happened, I'm surprised there hasn't been more reaction to the Gaga exclusivity deal. That said, I think it's silly to think that Gaga doesn't have the LGBTQ community's back.

And lets have a gay rights advocate face off. The finalists are:
Madonna
Lady Gaga
Liza Minelli
Danielle Staub
And that Reichen L-some-hard-to-spell-last-name
