I just saw Gaga in Boston tonight, my third time seeing her. (I have now seen her live as many times as I have seen Madonna live.) The first two times were in a small theater, tonight was in an arena.
It's been 14 months since I last saw Gaga and somehow, despite relentlessly touring since then, her voice is better than it was. The show itself was spectacular, as I expected, but I was looking for any sense at all that she was pandering in any way, which people who have not seen her perform live seem convinced of. Frankly, I didn't see it. I certainly felt more acknowledged by her and gratitude for my presence in the audience than I ever did at the great pop gal of the '80s shows.
This time she made TWO direct announcements about supporting charities that focus on homelessness prevention among LGBT youth. AND her show was joyful, full of abandon, and funny. And for people who got "hung up" because they heard echoes of "Express Yourself" in "Born this Way," wait til you hear how she mashes up Janis Joplin and the best of Guns n Roses "Use Your Illusions" in the new song "You and I"!
I will see her again on the next tour. EVEN if it's in a football stadium.

Ooh, I love the Scissor Sisters. I'll have to look up the touring info.
The first time I heard "Take Your Mama" I thought it was an old Elton John song I was hearing for the first time.

With a little George Michael Faith-era acoustic guitar thrown in for good measure.
They were excellent, as always, my fifth time seeing them. The set was a too-short but sweet 30 minutes and did include "Take Your Mama Out."
Ana's funniest line: "We are Scissor Sisters and if you don't know who we are, you aren't gay or British."

I went to one of the July MSG concerts and was at the HBO taping at MSG this month.
She was splendid both times and was really on her game for the HBO taping.
I think after the HBO special airs in May, a lot of people will begin to "get" what she does - - people who may not understand the appeal, will see the light.....
She'll be an even bigger superstar than she is already - if that's even possible.

Namo, I agree completely. I just saw her in Buffalo and never before have I felt an artist was being so completely herself. Her authenticity and transparency were evident. I contrast this with Madonna concerts where most of the time Madonna seemed unaware there was an audience-going through the motions (albeit her dancing is awe-inspiring). Gaga was with the audience.
Gaga is about to explode. The other thing that is refreshing is that this isn't bland bump and grind, tits and ass pop. This is gruesome fairy tales, jaded love, danger and poison all set to great beats. She reminds me of Leigh Bowery and other wonderful, dangerous artists.
Her voice seems unable to be fatigued. She just kept singing and screaming and belting and growling and the voice never faded or tired. Maybe she made a pact with the devil. She doesn't dance quite as much or as well as Madonna or Britney but she is singing live and fierce.

Absolutely. I have no idea why the people who get so freaked out by a move like the meat outfit don't see that, other than they just don't know.

Posted: 3/15/11 at 9:39amThe meat dress didn't freak me out so much as the waste bothered me. I don't eat meat personally, but don't guilt those who do. I get it. I used to eat it and quite like it. I have a problem with animals dying for flesh that would be wasted. It could have been constructed of rubber and no one would have known the difference. It could have made the same statement.

Posted: 3/15/11 at 11:10amJerseyGirl, the fact that it elicited the response you have proves that it would NOT have made the same statement if it weren't real meat.

You don't think she could have made the same INTENDED statement, had she said after the initial shock, "Well, honestly, it's not REAL meat, but here's the reason I am wearing it..." or had she worn leather or fur which could be reworn or reworked?
She had to explain it anyway. And honestly, "However, it has many interpretations but for me this evening. If we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones." That statement didn't even make sense. Had she said, "Soon we'll have fewer rights than animals" or "our rights will be as worthless as rotting meat," then maybe. Technically won't the meat on our bones have the exact same rights as the rest of us regardless? I have never heard another explanation for the meat dress, only what she said to a very perplexed Ellen.
I love Gaga. I just didn't get this move.

I'm with Kad...the 'intended' statement would have felt much less bad-ass rockstar than the actual statement. I mean...I found it gross. And her explanation of it was insane. Which is exactly why I loved it.

Where's Songanddanceman to tell us how she's only doing this for her own benefit:
"Little Monsters, unite: Lady Gaga has harnessed her creative powers to aid the earthquake victims of Japan. Friday, the singer announced via Twitter that she’d designed a red-and-white wristband that reads “We pray for Japan” in both English and Japanese, and comes stamped with her signature symbol: the claw. The superstar, who previously displayed her great admiration for Tokyo fans on her arms, is donating all proceeds of the $5 bracelet to relief efforts — and buyers are encouraged to give even more if they can. They must be: Monday, the singer told followers she’d already raised $250,000 through sales."

I like how Joe Jervis ("Joe My God") put it:
"The fastest-selling single in iTunes history, Born This Way has already sold millions of copies worldwide and has gone to #1 in more than 30 countries. Whether you're a Gaga fan or not, you cannot deny the unprecedented impact of hundreds of millions of people singing out loud, that yes, we were born this way. Lady Gaga is pushing the movement forward in ways few could have possibly fathomed."
The single is number one for a fifth week in a row, by the way.

I was of course at the 2/21/11 concert and thought her terrific...
I had been to the Monster Ball in July but this night was um, er special...
You see - the Garden was chaos as always when you have floor GA tickets and some stupid ass told us (well, pointed) to go "there" and we ended up in a stairwell with out a freaking wristband/s...
well..
Security finds us - goes berserk only to discover that it was MSG's fault we got there in the first place..
Now.
I took findingnamo's routine (or is it rotund) and acted like a self centered entitled bitch and threw a fit...I want names ...numbers...I am reporting this...we are late ..blah..blahh..
Well...it worked..
We get hustled into an elevator along with Johnny Weir (?)..and get led around backstage..(?) then led underneath the stage(?) to our floor spots...
well..
We then get to stand about 20 feet from the GaGa to the right and 20 feet below a dancing and singing SIR PAUL MCARTNEY...
It was Magic!
She was Magic..
She's no Karen Ziemba, however!

When the interviewer first broached the tender subject — observing that "a bit of ['Born This Way'] does sound quite a lot" like Madonna's song — Gaga vehemently denied having knowingly referenced it, saying, "I am not stupid enough to put out a record and be that moronic."
But the interviewer pressed on, and that's when she really went off:
No. Listen to me. Why the f**k? I'm a songwriter...Why would I try to put out a song and think I'm getting one over on everybody? That's retarded. If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It's the same on that's been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I'm the first f**king artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn't mean I'm a plagiarist. It means I'm f**king smart. Sorry.
The reporter then changed the subject to Gaga's new single, "Judas." But the singer, now in tears, only wanted to talk about "Born This Way."
I feel like honestly that God sent me those lyrics and that melody...There's no way for something that pure to be wrong.

"I consider it part of my life's work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully," she said in a statement to Perezhilton.com. "To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake requires honesty to make."
Good for her for apologizing. I just don't get why the comparisons would set her off. It seems to be universally agreed by anyone who has heard both songs that they sound remarkably similar, and I thought the consensus was that it HAD to be intentional, between her Madonna-esque look at the VMAs and by the fact that people have ears.
