It's weird how threatened and defensive some people get when faced with a discussion of vegetarianism. And yeah yeah yeah, it's all "those militant PETA people who ruin it" or whatever, but anecdotally, my experience from the years I was vegetarian and vegan showed me that there's a certain brand of meat-eater who seems to make it a point of principle to act like a goddamn asshole about delicious meat is or how they could never do it (even if non one suggested they did) whenever the subject comes up.
Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me.

I actually do not care what people eat at all. And I find myself in these situations where people throw out all those "Well, do you eat…?" questions like I listed above. I try to be discreet and not make a big deal of choosing to eat vegetarian, but like Eric says, people very often leap into a defense of their omnivore eating without me saying a word to them. "Oh I hardly ever eat meat at all. I'm practically vegetarian already" and all I can think is "I don't CARE.' I've never really encountered any proselytizing vegetarians. Vegans, on the other hand, are an entirely different matter. They are almost as bad as people doing the Paleo diet.

I experienced annoying people on both sides... I was 16 when I became vegetarian and a few of my new friends at the time were vegetarian and kept pushing me, telling me constantly how terrible it is to eat meat, meat is murder, don't sing along to this song, because its about vegetarianism... While they did get me thinking about the meat industry, their stupid attitude kept me from having a real discussion about it. When I finally stopped eating meat I didn't tell them for about 6 months, because I didn't want them to feel good about it.
But since then it's been the meat eaters who started most of the conversations, with remarks like, "Vegetarians are so mean, they eat the cows food" or everything Namo and Eric said...
I never try to convince anyone to stop eating meat, if someone asks me I gladly have a discussion and explain my reasons, but I think it is something everyone has to decide for themselves.
I have a very "live and let live" attitude toward people's diets. It's not my business unless they're putting themselves in danger by being bulemic/anorexic.
In college I had a friend who was vegetarian and I was cool with it and she was cool with what I ate. No trying to get the other to "switch sides"
On the flip side I had a friend who was a "hardcore" vegan. She wore vegan shoes and verbally attacked anyone who ate meat. Called them "murderers" and such. She'd talk about how much healthier she was than me. She was my roommate on a cruise and would eat at least 2-3 desserts a night. Who's more healthy? The person who had a steak with no dessert or the person who had triple helpings of vegan sushi and three desserts?
Also, those desserts had milk, eggs, and cheese in them. And that pizza she had for lunch - that had animal products on it as well. If you're going to take a "holier than thou" stance it helps to actually be "holier than thou"
If anyone ever gives you a really hard time about your diet just quote Spock - "In a strict scientific sense, Doctor, we all feed on death - even Vegetarians." Nobody can argue with Spock - who was a vegetarian himself.
