Don't EVER say "It doesn't happen anymore" or "It doesn't happen here."
EVER.
Happy Pride and be safe.

Just a couple of blocks from my apt. Very scary.
I am so saddened. This is the first year that I am really comfortably out to most people in my life. I AM proud. I have found the love of my life. We're getting married and planning a family. This just makes me so upset. I don't get it. There isn't an ounce of me that understands it on any level. There are still real idiots out there. They hate us. They hate us so much they would beat the hell out of someone for who they find attractive. I can't wait to get out of here.
Hopefully the neighbors will be able to offer enough info so that the police can get these neanderthals and find a nice cave where they can stay for a few decades.
If it had happened outside my place, you KNOW I'd have video.
So sad.
Very sad yet I'm not so surprised. I work on 2nd Ave and 89th St. The area has become very bridge and tunnel.

Ew, that forehead wound looks awful.
I hope he recovers and heals well.
JerseyGirl2, what do you mean "I can't wait to get out of here." Do you feel you are living someplace unsafe and if so, where do you feel is safer?
Moving to Sweden May of next year. I love the US, but my love is in a country that allows us to marry and have full acceptance and benefits. Every thing like this that happens makes it a little easier to plan the move.
The story about the Stonewall type raid in Texas (the link is on the same page) is just as maddening.
But then, it is Texas.

But then, it is Texas.
To be honest, that sort of statement is pretty maddening as well.
The event occurred in Ft. Worth, which is not a small hick town. And from the way the article reads, it sounds like there is a LOT of missing information, especially since it doesn't sound like random raids on gay bars have occurred in the city for a very long time. If raids were a regular occurrence, then it would make sense, but the composite of reports is sketchy at best and there are loads of details missing.

I heard the guy in New York was actually attacked because he told the wrong guy a Micheal Jackson joke.
I have been the victim of some verbal attacks lately, and found it very upsetting, because I have gone most of my life free from that type of bullsh**!
But I need things like that to remind me that we have much more to do. We have come a long way, but we have an even longer way to go!
Instances like this just make me want to fight more and more!!
Curious....this sounds like idiots and not a true 'gay bashing' as the article doesn't mention that the victim IS gay or that he was targeted because of his gay demeanor, etc.
Sounds more (from my quick read) like white trash just beating up on a lone individual and just slinging around "faggot" because it's in their vocabulary.
But I could have missed something.
JG2...good luck with your move. I hope you find all of the happiness you deserve in Sweden.
I was in the city yesterday with my younger sister. I was taking her to see a show and had order tickets without realizing it was the same day as the parade.
I've stated more than once that I am, absolutely, on the side of gay equality. But, I have to admit, every time my sister tried to hold my hand I got nervous. Celebrations such as yesterday's not only bring out the supporters but the detractors and, for lack of a better word, haters. I was concerned that some idiots would try to mess with us. I was more concerned for her than myself because she cannot defend herself or even run.
Luckily, nothing happened and, also, my sister has no idea what's going on in the world. She just didn't know to be nervous.

Eris, it sounds like you have the sweetest relationship with your younger sister.
"Just a couple of blocks from my apt."
Presumably a trashy area then.

What does that mean, exactly?
I guess it means that people like myself, those that get to the city by way of bridge or tunnel, are bringing down the neighborhood.

You certainly did. The victim is gay. His attackers called him "Faggot" and left him to die in a bloody pool.
That is gay-bashing, even if the victim was straight and perceived to be gay.
A crime is a hate-crime when a criminal or group of criminals choose a potential victim who is simply part of a group--OR WHO IS PERCEIVED TO BE PART OF A GROUP.
Even if the article declined to "out" the victim (who is a close friend of an old friend of mine), the article clearly states the assailants called him "FAGGOT!" before beating him.
What part of that gay-bashing don't you understand?
Sheesh.

My friend was bashed last year. Then his friends jumped the guy who did it to him. It definitely still happens. =/
we need his help...

on a serious note....this beating inspired me to write
We need to be vigilant when someone is getting beaten in our streets...
The victim speaks out.

Isn't it weird to bleep out "faggot" when it's a gay man explaining what gay bashers yelled at him?
Still, it was refreshing they didn't feel the need to get quotes from gay bashers for "balance."
