Again, I would ask: Is it more important for the US public to CXL a media source in our current times?

Let's add something else. Kimmel's show ratings were down 11.1% as of August 25,2025, he was not on in September. It is not like Disney is canceling a major hit. The genre of "late night shows" is not as popular as it was years ago. Would Disney have cancelled the show if it had really good ratings?

…this cancellation has nothing to do with ratings. Are you dense?

I like Colbert. Was never a fan of Kimmel or Fallon. But I used to always watch Leno back in the day and my all-time favorite, Craig Ferguson. Late night TV is dying simply due to the fact people don't watch TV shows live anymore. It's mostly streaming services where they can watch it later or over the weekend.
Conan was the best.
There also was an advertiser boycott launched against Kimmel's sponsors in response to his comments. Not everything is the fault of orange man.

That's a very good point to add to the discussion.
Although I would feel betrayed, hurt, insulted by the lack of respect for what I'd brought to the network, I hope that when the dust settles, Kimmel will realize that the future no longer lies in Network/OTA broadcasting (as evidenced by who the winners were at last Sunday's Emmy awards). The future of television lies with streaming services.
That said, both HULU and Disney+ played a role in this recent event, but there are so many other options available. I'm VERY curious about what Kimmel and Colbert might talk about if the rumors are true that Colbert plans to invite him to be a guest on his show.
PS: In my haste to post, I was not complete in my thought when I wrote, "Disney/ABC didn't CXL Kimmel". Obviously, they did. What I should have written was a more complete thought:
Disney/ABC didn't CXL Kimmel solely because of his speech, so much as they were threatened to comply with the strong-arm tactics of Trump and his appointed chair of the FCC, and the goals those two personally want to accomplish.

That's like putting the cart before the horse. Preserve/protect the medium, THEN (once it's secure) follow up with correcting its flaws/faults.

Bwaygurl2 - You posted a bunch of thigs so let me address some of them. First, his show was down 11.1% in August 2025 so it is not a ratings hit. Any bets on show being cancelled if it had huge ratings. All late-night shows are not as popular as they were years ago and them being cancelled has been discussed even before this event. According to your posts, Disney stood behind Kimmel's statement, and they were happy with his performance. It seems to me Disney has no guts/backbone if they allow themselves to be bullied and let the federal government (Trump) determine programming.
Let's talk free speech. Has Kimmel bashed Trump on his show ever since Trump first started running for POTUS, the answer is yes. How come he has done this for years and was still on every night? Is Kimmel free to do comedy shows for example and spout off about Trump at all of them. Once again, the answer is yes. While not working on a Disney show is Kimmel free to say whatever the hell he wants about Trump and call him vile names, the answer is yes.
How many years has Trump been POTUS? Can you tell me what TV shows have been cancelled because Trump did not like them or the performer on the show?
I will end with unlike some BWW posters, I don't find any joy in seeing a man get murdered in front of his wife and children. They could be the most despicable person on earth, and I still don't want to see anybody murdered.
Idiot said: "we must respond with urgency. I've cancelled Hulu and stated the reason - I urge others to. Free Speech. Free Kimmel. We cannot be passive here. Authoritarian roots are spreading under our feet."
What about Free Charlie Kirk? I know it's too late for that but where was your urgency there? That was the epitome of an authoritarian attack. What are you actively doing against the perpetrators of that and the groups who share their goals? You seem passive.

I think the difference now is that Trump had something to hold over them (the merger) to get them to do what he wanted. I also think in his first term "the adults were in charge" and his cabinet kept him from his worst impulses. None of those folks signed up for Trump 2.0 and we are much worse off this time.

You do have a point but the fact is that most sponsors and advertisers also ran away after his remarks. It's always important to keep in mind who keeps you alive. And how businesses and the world work.

I think that people would benefit most from more neutral news sources.
"I think people would benefit from more neutral news sources"
Seb, you are right! A broken clock is correct twice a day!
From everything else you say, I don't think you follow your own advice.
Seb28 said: "I think that people would benefit most from more neutral news sources."
…and I have nothing negative to say about your choice in opinion.
Before Trump 2.0, we all were privileged with the choice to have our opinions, and those opinions were and are still protected under the 1st amendment of our Constitution.
Until Trump 2.0, our options for news sources were varied (i.e, from FOX on the conservative side, to PBS at the more liberal end of the spectrum). Similarly, I like Colbert and ACL2006 (who also happens to like Colbert) prefers his all-time favorite, Craig Ferguson. Prior to Trump 2.0, they, you AND I were free to choose between your “more neutral” news source, they theirs, or I mine.
What I (and other Americans) object to is the removal of choice by Trump 2.0, and instead having our Constitutionally protected rights to choose be restricted/silenced/dictated to us in favor of the singular, personal taste of the Commander-in-Chief, who chooses to constantly test, erode and even attempt to destroy our Constitution and our Democracy.
Although you (and Trump) have the right to voice your thoughts and opinions, neither of you are entitled to dictate what mine, or anyone else’s should be.

Nexstar Led the Charge Against Jimmy Kimmel. It Had a Business Motive.
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/the-business-motive-behind-nexstar-silencing-jimmy-kimmel.html
Excerpt:
"Acquisition has been the entire game for Nexstar since the company bought its first TV station in the late 1990s. Since then, it has expanded to over 200 local stations across the country. It owns NewsNation, the other-other cable-news channel that has recently been outperforming CNN and MSNBC in Saturday prime-time ratings. It owns The CW, which broadcasts NASCAR, college football, and shows like Totally Funny Animals. It owns the news-media aggregator The Hill, which may require some “full disclosure” segments as its writers cover the fallout over its parent company’s actions.
"Nexstar makes a lot of money through owning all this stuff, reporting $1.23 billion in net revenue in the second quarter. But it wants to own more. In August, it announced the $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna, a rival company that owns 64 additional TV stations, as well as the True Crime Network. In interviews dating back to Trump’s election, CEO Perry Sook has stated his intention to “move with a sense of urgency” to take advantage of a friendly climate for mergers under the FCC led by commissioner Brendan Carr. Hours before Kimmel’s suspension was made public, Carr said that Kimmel’s comments were “truly sick” and that there was a “strong case” for the FCC to act against ABC’s parent company, Disney."

This is ominous:
"FCC's Carr also told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” that “we’re not done yet” with the changes in “the media ecosystem” that are consequences of President Donald Trump’s election last fall."

Holy.Cats.
First of all, SteveSanders... Thank you for the information.
Secondly, I'm so stunned... and so saddened that this is happening...

The people who hate cancel culture just canceled Jimmy Kimmel. Irony writes itself.
I can't find a reference now. But, I read that Colbert has asked (or is going to ask) Kimmel to be a guest on his show. Must-see t.v.

True, but the situation is darker and bleaker than "irony". For example, the ladies of "The View", who are normally very vocal about what's going on in the Trump administration, spoke only about Cash Patel, today.
...not a word about what's going on in their own home - not even from Whoopi.

EVERY SINGLE BIT OF THIS IS BECAUSE OF THAT RAT PEOPLE LIKE YOU SUPPORT. He let all seven deadly sins run free in our government and it is destroying the country - and you support it. Your support of a phony, deeply cowardly man you know to be a criminal president says all one needs to know about you.
You, Seb, are morally broken.
