Bravo Evan!!! He skated beautifully. He deserves that Gold! I am not a fan of Pleshenko...he is too arrogant for me. He looked like a sore loser on the podium.
Dottie, Patrenko is part of Weir's team. I think Johnny Weir was robbed to be honest. Exceot for 1 little hiccup I think he did a great job!
Of course the wimp that I am I cried for that poor Japanese skater when his laces were untied. He looks like a sweet kid....I'm all about the sweetness. He was truly a professional to get up and finish his routine.
"That is why I love and respect Michele Kwan's tenacity."
Make no mistake, if Kwan had won the gold, she would have followed the same path.
Regarding Elvis, I disagree with just about every syllable of his editorial. If Plushenko had landed his jumps cleanly, he would have won. But he didn't. Sounds like Elvis wants to re-litigate his runner-up finishes.
Boobies, I think Pleshenko looked like a sore loser too!
It's Viktor, with a K. And he's a naturalized American citizen now. He and his former coach Galina (who also coached Oksana) are Weir's coaches.
It was an enjoyable night but I was really rooting for Frank Carroll! It was so great to see him finally get a gold medal from one of his skaters! Personally- I really love to watch Weir skate- he's so artistic without flapping his arms all over the place. As far as Elvis' comments- all he was was a great jumper and nothing else. Of course he would put more importance on jumping but a quad is just one jump. I never really enjoyed Elvis' skating. Can't wait to see the ice dancing!
Stagey is that like Liza with a Z? It's Viktor with a K not Viktor with a C...
Thanks for the info SM2. I'm also happy for Frank Carroll especially how close his protege's have come in the past. They also award the coaches with medals now.
I didn't know the coaches got medals too- that makes me even happier for Frank!
supportivemom, I think this might be the first year they're doing that. Either Evan Lysacek or Meredith Viera mentioned that on the Today Show this morning that Frank Carroll is getting a medal, too.
So Plushenko said that "if you cant do a quad, then you should be in ladies figure skating".
He and Stojko are such douchebags!
Lysacek simply didnt need a quad to beat you Evgeny! Get over it and grow up!
I was very happy for Frank Carroll too!
I love Lambiel, but he should've ended up behind Johnny. That poor kid deserved higher scores.

I think a good choreographer can also make or break a routine. I thought Sandra Bezic's choreopgrahy for Brian Boitano's '88 routine was spot on. That routine had movements that meshed beautifully with the music. If they were going to give out awards to Team Boitano, she deserved one. I don't know who actually was responsible for choosing his music that year, but it was a winner.
In contrast I thought his routine for his Olympic comeback (was it '94?) was awful. I think he skated to Aaron Copeland and I thought it just fell flat. I forget who he used as his choreographer, but it just didn't work. I often wonder how they choose their music. Yes, Copeland's music is beautiful, but I just didn't think it worked for an Olympic championship routine.
OK, rant over, LOL. I've been thinking about his poor choice of music for close to 20 years now. The minute I saw the routine he was using for his comeback (must have been the nationals or even earlier), I knew it was a loser.

The whole quad thing reminds me of the triple axel brouhaha back in the early nineties when Tonya Harding and Midori Ito did them. Kristi Yamaguchi didn't and she was the underdog going into that year's Olympics. Do you remember when she won and the cameras caught her coach mouthing the words "no triple axel"?
Yvgeny and Elvis are on their own little planet. Yvgeny made lots of mistakes in his program. These guys think that mastering one jump trumps everything else on the ice. I am happy for Evan, and happy that he was so gracious in his win.

It wouldn't be figure skating without controversy!
Wow, Slovakia beat the Russians in hockey last night. Amazing! Both Canada and Russia got a scare with both games going to a shootout but at least Crosby saved the day for Canada.

Lauren...I agree. I think after Yvgeny did his quad he thought that he had the Gold in his pocket. I believe his arrogance lost him the Gold. BTW...is that a faux mullet he is sporting? He needs to go and get a perm or something.
"...but at least Crosby saved the day for Canada."
Umm...Martin Brodeur saved the day for Canada. Did you see the save on the last shot in the shootout, which came after Crosby had scored on his?
See Plushenko's coach's commentes in the link below. Interesting choice of words when he refers to the gold medal as Pkushenko's 'destiny'.
And while no subjective scoring methodology can ever be perfect, the current one is light years better than its predecessor. If anyone'e interested, at the Olympics website you can look at the detailed marks for both of them, and see where GOE (Grade of Execution) points were given for each element.
Sour grapes

Okay, I'll give you that, madbrian. It was a joint effort for the win. Marty played well in the shootout. It's interesting to watch his style in the shootout because he's not a big man, like some of the current goalies. He had a relatively easy game, though, unlike his Swiss counterpart. The Canadians looked like they'd been partying for the past couple of days. No legs by the third period.
As I mentioned already, Plushenko scowled on the podium, but if anyone saw him interviewed, he was gracious and a perfect gentleman about losing.
The fact Canada's offense and defense were in la-la land, coasting after up 2-0, gives me more reason to not give any props to Crosby. Is he not supposed to be the crowned savior/leader of Team Canada? NBC says so. But let's forget Brodeur (only called an All-Star by Matt Lauer), Thornton, Staal, Iginla, Pronger, Niedermayer, and even up and comers like Toews and Doughty. I understand NBC has to sell hockey to the mainstream but driving the point home that Crosby is a step above everybody, when he is arguably the second-best on his team with Malkin, and lowering the profiles of Ovechkin in the process is beyond annoying.
I did not see the second goal on Brodeur, the first one was an excellent well-placed shot of precision on the part of the Swiss scorer.
I hated that the game by Hiller was virtually ignored by the commentators outside of the booth with Doc Emrick and the other guy.
1988 had the Battle of the Brians.
2010 had the Battle of the Douchebags.
At least the right douchebag won. But Weir in SIXTH??? After Crazy-Eyed Canadian's shaky Phantom of the Opera (a program I SWEAR Katarina Witt skated at some point...or was it Elizabeth Manly?). And Lord love Lambiel and his hotness...but come ON. Weir may not have deserved the bronze, but he certainly deserved 4th.
As for Stojko. Mary, please.
Janey, I will have to watch that interview. May be I will like him again.
Plushenko's jumps were wobbly and I thought the program was kind of frantic. I really like Plushenko and hoped he'd win but I'm thrilled none the less for our new champion. Weir was beautiful and gracious all around. I loved that he tried to calm the crowd down after his very low, unfair scores were up.
As far as I am concerned, Weir was a true champion last night.
Absolutely. Beautiful skate. Utter class. Without sacraficing one bit of Weir-ness.
Even though he was scored low, I think he showed his critics that, in the end, he had the goods. Atta girl!
Boobs, that's ok. I'm just trying to lessen the intense hate around here a little.
