Here is the short version for those who haven't heard the story:
Radio station in Sacramento, CA has a "hold your wee for a Nintendo wii" contest. One woman (28 years old playing to win it for her kids) dies after drinking too much.
Now comes news that 10 people have been fired. I'm personally wondering if John Geary, vice president and general manager of KDND's parent company, Entercom/Sacramento, will take some responsibility himself. There is no way he didn't know about the contest himself.
A nurse even called in during the morning show contest to tell them of the dangers and they dismissed her.
Ok... this is turning into the not so short version. Here is the link.

Not very many people are aware that you can die of water intoxication. Water.
A slightly chartitable response might be in order over the death of a mother with young children who wanted to win a frigging video game for her kids.
I guess I should've clarified that this was a water drinking contest where you needed to abstain from going to the bathroom. WATER! I wouldn't have thought about possible water intoxication if I had entered either. It was supposed to be a fun contest. So sad.
This is sad and all, but why fire the radio staff? I guess they have to fire someone.
Just sad all around--and not a good indicator of materialism these days.
The whole thing is VERY sad really.
I had no idea you could die from too much water.
You learn something new every day.

Popular - There was also recently, (say within the last three months) a hazing incident where a frat house forced guys to drink water for an extended period of time and would not let them relieve themselves which ultimately ended up with a water intoxication death. It happened in Berkeley and was all over the news here. That was the first time I had ever heard of such a thing myself.
Yes, I heard about that too! They were talking about it on the radio yesterday when discussing how impossible it was for the radio staff in that area to have not known the dangers because the hazing incident was so publicized there.

Add me to the number of posters who had never heard of water intoxication before this incident. My partner, a former nurse, told me it has the same effects on the body as diabetes.
Yup. There are milder forms, too. Some people take the broad "8 glasses a day" guideline a bit too seriously, following it regardless of their activity level or what else they're consuming throughout the day, and end up getting sick. The bottom line is: Your body is smarter than you think you are. In general, if you don't feel thirsty, you probably don't need anything to drink.
On another point: If that was the theme they were looking for, I could have come up with a "hold your wee" contest that is a lot safer -- and entertaining.
That's odd--when I was a kid, my mother used to tell us not to drink too much water because it would make us sick.
I'ts odd. i remember once seeing a woman on The Today Show, she was supposed to be some sort of health expert. I think they were discussing health and safety during summer. She said to keep hydrated constnatly, becuae "even before you feel thirsty you may be getting dehydrated." That never made sense to me. I'm somwhat glad it's not true.
What, exactly, is the biochemistry to water intoxication? By that I mean what exactly does it do to your body?
The same thing happened to a DC police officer in the summer of 2005. As he was involved in some rigorous training during the heatwave, he drank too much water. I believe he was only 25 or 26 at the time. His funeral was held at the church next door to me.
I've been thinking about this way too much today!
.. and back to work I go :)
water intoxication
Geek-
Water intoxication is due to an electrolyte imbalance. The body needs a certain percentage of salts to function and if you drink too much water, you upset that balance. Think athletes drinking gatorade/other sports drinks to stay hydrated.
You shouldn't necessarily wait to be thirsty to drink water though, especially if you are doing a lot of physical activity or it's hot outside. Like everything in life, use common sense.
I don't know who were the bigger idiots---the ones who thought up the contest, or the ones who participated!
And condolences to the family---the radio station should have been more informed!

Not this has anything to do with much but...
People who are prone to kidney stones (me) are supposed to drink A LOT of water. Even when not thirsty.
According to several of my doctors, I should be drinking AT LEAST 1 bottle of water (8 oz) per hour.
"The kidneys of a healthy adult can process fifteen liters of water a day! You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time. As a general guideline, most adults need about three quarts of fluid each day. Much of that water comes from food, so 8-12 eight ounce glasses a day is a common recommended intake. You may need more water if the weather is very warm or very dry, if you are exercising, or if you are taking certain medications."
Odd question, but I wonder if those who had, for example, a saltier (more sodium) breakfast were at an advantage for avoiding health risks.
"In an online recording of the show, the DJs can be heard making comments joking about people dying from water intoxication, even discussing a case in Northern California two years ago in which student Matthew Carrington, 21, died after drinking too much water during a fraternity stunt.
One of the DJs even admitted they maybe should have done some research before the contest.
One female caller, who identified herself as Eva, also phoned in to warn the radio station that drinking too much water can kill."
An investigation into death now opened... this gets sadder by the minute with the evidence of incompentence
Wow. Now that is apalling. I'm glad they were fired after reading that...

And people still participated? For a VIDEO GAME?

You know, it could be a class thing. Back in the last Great Depression, deaths among desperate contestants were not unknown in dance marathons with cash prizes.
I used to listen to this radio show every day. This is so sad, but very stupid on the DJ's part.
"And people still participated? For a VIDEO GAME?"
Apparently the contestants were in a seperate room and were not able to hear what the DJs or the people calling in were saying.

I wish all these idiotic radio shows would die and go away.
There is zero music on commercial radio anymore.
