My parents built their house close to a cemetery, and, of course, as kids we were told that the cemetery USED to come all the way to where they built the house. I don't think I EVER slept well in that house.
LilMiz - that is so SAD!
I lived within walking distance of both my elementary school and my junior high, so never had to endure the misery of the school bus.
Addy, we lead parallel lives. I walked to grade school and junior high as well. That could be why I never mind walking anywhere. To this day, I walk all the time.
oh, I LOVE these stories!
The only time I didn't like walking to school was when we moved the year I was going into 6th grade (same town, just a few streets away), and I had to walk to school a new way. There was a cut-through on a neighbor's property that had a giant tree with old tree roots that were sticking up all over the place. Klutz that I am, I tripped over a tree root and skinned my knee and had to arrive at school the first day of 6th grade bleeding and muddy.
This is one of my favorite memories...it's when my mom knew she had a performer, or so she says
It was my kindergarten "interview". I suppose they wanted to make sure we were only minimally obnoxious. So following the interview, the teacher interviewing me says to me, "My, what pretty pink shoes you're wearing!". Now, I was wearing Jellies. Who remembers Jellies? I LOVED my Jellies. But they were NOT pink. I (a three year old blonde midget with a smart mouth) looked straight up into this woman's face and said (exact words, mind you) "'Scuse me lady, but they're not pink. THEY'RE FUSCHIA."

oh I love that story!
You have to love when kids open their mouths!
...my mother tells a story about me from when I was about 2 and we were in an elevator in the NYC building we lived in. Another little girl who lived in the building got on with her babysitter, who happened to be black. I piped up with "Mommy, why does Lillibet have a chocolate grandmother?"
...Mom said she wanted to disappear into the floor.
Addy, I just laughed really loudly in my college's dead-quiet library. Now I look like a total nutjob...thanks
and your story made me laugh out loud in my office... but the people around me are used to sudden bursts of laughter whenever I'm online!

I remember being tested for minimal English competence when I went into elementary school. I didn't know the word for stapler- I don't think I'd ever used one.
All those elementary school standardized tests... What did they really learn about us?
I remember being so excited in Kindergarten when I got to be on 'snack' patrol and I could wheel the little red wagon down to our cafeteria to get the mini milk-cartons that we had for our snack. There was something about being in the hallway of the school when everyone else was in class that was very exciting.
Oh yes and being asked to bring a note to the principal's office?
But Mom, the princiPAL was your pal!!!
I loved that feeling too Addy. I got to hawk Philly soft pretzels to each and every classroom each day when I was in the fourth grade. The power of taking money from everyone was heady. They were three cents each or two for a nickle.

I remember my first snack time in American kindergarten. There was peanut butter. I was horrified.
As a matter of fact YES M_E! My grammar school principal was a close family friend, and I adored her!
Addy, that elevator story got me big time. I was at an internet cafe checking emails, etc. and had to excuse myself I was laughing so hard. I love starting my day with a laugh.
hiding a copy of the Hair soundtrack cuze my mom said i was too young.
Beav - when I was 14 or 15, the movie Audrey Rose came out and I was dying to go with my friend. My mother said no, it was too scary for me (she was LOTS of fun, yes?), until I said, well, Mom, I've already read the book twice. Then she had to give in. :)
I remember loving it when we had a babysitter on Friday nights because my sister and I would stay up and watch "Love, American Style" on TV. My parents never let us watch it...
Mine either addy. Thank heavens for baby sitters!
In honor of Addy, I am bumping this thread.
Addy it's on page one, just in case you're looking!
Enjoy.
oh, Dottie!
I love it!
Thanks for the memory of the memory. And the laugh.
Your stories of playing in your grandparents basements reminded me of what my friends and I would do in my basement. We had a bar set up as well...only we didn't just serve drinks, we created a whole restaurant...Beerfest (great title for little kids, huh?) We created menus, and provided entertainment, and forced my mother to serve us lunch in our "restaurant". We couldn't ever talk her into dinner though! LOL!
We also used to play "pizza shop" behind the stone wall and serve slate pizzas to the neighborhood.
It's amazing to think that none of us ever opened a restaurant or went into catering!
watching movies with my grandma on our black and white tv
