What is the most beautiful song you've ever heard.... so pretty that it makes you cry?
That's very subjective - a lot depends on the singer and the performance, and how you're experiencing it - on record? In person? In the context of a show? And what is going on in your life that might be triggered by that song or singer or performance.
Edelweiss can be very moving, so can Danny Boy.
I agree with Rath, any song can ve the most beautiful or make you cry, it all depends on the circumstances
Somethings are meant to be and/or Astonishing. Sutton Foster is one hell of an actress. (and singer of course)
For me its Raul singing "why" from tick..tick..BOOM! or Norbert singing "Nobody needs to know" from L5Y.
Akiva
what i meant was a non musical theatre song... that from the first notes its just so so beautiful
for me its Cannonball by Damien Rice
the instrumental score, especially the cello, in JRB's "Still Hurting" I find to be exquisitely beautiful.

But the most beautiful songs I've ever heard sung ARE all musical theatre songs!

To be serious: 'The Color Purple/Finale' from "The Color Purple"
In The Arms of an Angel. AGggghhh...
1. Debussy's "Clair de Lune"
2. Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op.43"
3. Silent Night
(To be fair, 1 and 2 aren't songs.)
hear you me, Jimmy Eat World isn't my absolute favorite band, but i'm always so close to crying
and Angel gets me really sad too

Almost all of JRB's music moves me.
Rathnait, I'm really loving your sense of humour, even if I'm not sure if you were trying to be funny or not :P
Um, songs that always get me... Mad World by Gary Jules, the Iron and Wine version of Such Great Heights (although I really like the Postal Service version too). Let Go by Frou Frou off the same soundtrack... the theme from Schindler's List, the background music from the end of Shoujo Kamei Utena. The song from End of Evangelion that I can't remember the name of (Probably one of the creepiest cinematic moments ever). Anything by Elliot Smith (although especially that one song from The Royal Tenenbaums that I can't remember the name of). Aeris's theme from FF7, Eyes on You from FF8, Melodies of Life from FF9, Suteki Da Ne from FF10 (this song can make me cry at the drop of a hat. Tidus!), as well as the Song of the Faith from the same game, and the song from the Final Fantasy movie. The theme from Princesss Mononoke. Ooooooo pretty much anything sad by Yoko Kanno, particularly songs from Escaflowne and Blue and Real Folk Blues and Julia's theme from Cowboy Bebop. Lucky Denver Mint by Jimmy Eat World, Run by Snow Patrol, I Will Wait For You by Michel Legrand, I could go on and on...
As you can see most of mine are from movies and anime and video games^^;;; That's why I love theater so much, I love music in context. I tried to refrain from naming any theater songs though.
The Beach Boys - God Only Knows
The Shins - New Slang (When You Notice the Stripes)
Although I do agree that Raul Esparza singing "Why" is gorgeous.

"A Sorta Fairytale" by Tori Amos always gets me.
There are others but I can't think of them at the moment...
"Beautiful Disaster" by Kelly Clarkson (especially the live versions that are either a cappella or with just piano accompaniment)
And So It Goes - Billy Joel
Moon River - Johnny Mercer
