I love Ordinary Men Abound...It's the one I play the most. I just...love it.
I love that song; a lot of people think it's boring.

Wow, I don't think it's boring at all! I like the way he sings the "so I say baby, baby" and "I never wanted to need someone but you" lines. It has a great build-up and climax, too.
I guess you could make the case for 10,000 Miles and No Trace being "boring," but I think both of them are really soothing. Although I'm sure it sounds trite, No Trace is one of a few of his songs I can truly relate to.

Whoever mentioned Ordinary Men Abound, me as well. That, I'm with You, and Beautiful Song probably get played the most around here...but the entire cd is fantastic (of course!)
One interesting thing about 10,000 Miles is that it's obviously not based on anything real, but a sort of reflection on the situation in the movie Castaway. Despite that, it sounds totally personal to me. It makes me really wonder about the other songs - how many of the less explicable ones are "what if" and how many are from real life.
No Trace is just so...I think "evocative" is the word I'm looking for. And the music is so mellow and pretty.
I like the self-delusion in No Trace too. It makes it slightly theatrical.
Civilian is like crack...I love every song on it and I can't get enough of it! The only downside is that when I try to tab some of the songs out with my guitar, it turns into a fiasco with me kicking my amp over. Oh well.
I am, however, having success with "10,000 Miles," and I'm hoping to play and sing it at the next coffeehouse my school hosts.
Oooh, did someone say "Wonderchild" ringtone? How/Where did you get it?

I know I've mentioned this before, but guitargeek, that's so strange considering Adam's chord progressions don't sound too difficult and full of fancy fretwork.
Chloe, I've wondered the same thing. I've never written a song, but it almost doesn't seem possible to completely separate one's own feelings from the work at hand, even if it's a non-autobiographical piece (e.g. 10,000 Miles, Something of Ours). Perhaps it's because I'm used to listening to a lot of music with very obviously personal lyrics.

I think some of the chords are rather complex. For instance, I'm listening to Tomorrow and the Sun right now, and the chord at the end of "innocence" is very dissonant. there's a nice interplay between major and minor too.
I think a lot of those songs are 'what ifs...' pertaining to things that are important to him; a la Apology.

Apologies for sounding ignorant, but what's Apology?
It's this song he wrote a while ago, but never recorded.
At the Kean gig, he sang it even though it didn't end up on the record, and he told the story about where he got the idea for it. He said that he's seen every single episode of VH1's "Behind the Music," and that in all of them, the people end up with these incredibly screwed up lives; their kids and their wives are f*cked up, there are tons of drugs, and their lives are just all around "a mess." Adam said that after his career brings him fame and fortune and "fabulousity" (that's where it was born!) he hopes not to end up like that.
I'm able to find the base chords easily, but especially in "10,000 Miles," the base note changes quite a bit (slash chords are such a pain to hear - it's a slight change, but it's noticeable).
The main complaint I have is he uses seemingly simple chords, but the voicings are unusual and he adds a lot of extensions to them. Like the chord at the end of the refrain of "10,000 Miles." It took me forever to find the exact chord.
Now, I'd love to learn "No Trace," but I'm afraid to even touch it. I need a songbook!

Thanks for the info, Em.
Good luck, GG. I probably shouldn't talk about stuff I truly don't know about -- I don't know the first thing about actually playing a guitar, but was just making judgements based on my relatively untrained ear.
Do you remember what the Apology song itself was like Emcee? There's also a song called Mesmerized that I think he did with the Adam Pascal Band that a lot of people liked, but was never recorded.
I like it. It's interesting. I... have it if you want.
Can you send it to me too?
siamese dream - Don't worry about it. I felt like an idiot when I first sat down with the CD and my guitar. I originally thought that they would be easy...but I was obviously wrong. *cries*
Now look what you've done, Adam! Your genius makes me cry.
I'm sorry you're having trouble, guitar geek!
But something about it is sort of funny, without offense to you. A while ago, on the Adam LJ community, this girl was complaining that she didn't think people should be worshipping his music because his writing was SO LAME and his chord progressions were really stupid and easy.
... haha, she is easily decieved. :)
