Raúl and Bill Macy were interviewed this morning for the Leonard Lopate show on WNYC radio. The podcast is now available. It's 24 quite fascinating minutes looking at the dymanics of how this show comes together and works. Or not. They seem to be very comfortable with each other.
Also, when asked about future projects at the end of the interview, Raúl said: "There’s a big project I’ve been attached with for a while that we keep postponing, a new musical, and some other things that keep coming up. I’ve gotten an awful lot of attention from Hollywood people for this particular show, which is very funny. (snicker)"
So it sounds like Leap of Faith is on hold indefinitely. He also confirmed that they're not extending the run of STP. "Better to go out on top". Speed-The-Plow (The Leonard Lopate Show)
Okay, I totally thought the arm of that chair, or whatever that is to the right of the frame was Raúl's arm, like he was taking the picture himself. Oops.
The morning star always gets wonderful bright the minute before it has to go --doesn't it?
I just started to watch my DVD of Macy's movie, THE DEAL - he is such an engaging guy!
And does our man Raul only have two or three shirts? He seems to be wearing the same shirt in the Lopate photo and in Humbug's avatar! (Only kidding...)
Cute picture, though they both look a bit dazed. That's too bad about the oft-delayed "Leap of Faith"--I suppose it would be too much to hope that he'll star in a musical in '09 now, huh?
I think that show was recorded at what had to be the middle of the night for both of them. Raúl looks like he's totally focused on "must....keep....eyes....OPEN...."
Did anyone else watch the 60 Minutes interview with Capt. Sullenberger (the US Air pilot who landed the plane safely in the middle of the Hudson) and think "William H Macy has GOT to play him in the movie!!"? Their voices are nearly identical, and aside from the hair color, they look enough alike to be taken for brothers.
Humbug - I loved the interview with "Sully." And you are right that Macy has the exact demeanor of a good Air Force trained pilot - and those crisp blue eyes.
It's definitely flown by. At the beginning I didn't really feel compelled to be there to see it off, but as it gets closer I feel like I'd like to be there for the end, since I was there for the beginning... and then some.
It was a wonderful performance. Macy is totally in control of the material now with the result that he is wringing meanings out of lines that even he threw away when I saw him last month. Raul is prowling and neurotic, a little more pathetic at the end in his desperation. He took a pause just before he calls Karen into the office in the third scene, and I swear you can see the wheels turning and he knows that he is about to exact a terrible price to get what he wants.
I am now totally blown away by Elizabeth Moss - talk about a good learner! With Macy and Esparza as colleagues, she has learned how to use every part of her vocal instrument - she preaches, she growls, she purrs. She took a couple of pauses that she had not dared before. I actually found the second scene tighter than the first!
The orchestra section was full and enthusiastic. The cast took two curtain calls, and got a partial standing ovation at the second. I was sitting across the aisle from the camera, so the recording angle was a good one.
I am delighted to say that I got to talk very briefly to Macy afterwards, and he has got to be one of the sweetest, funniest guys on the planet.
Emcee - I am developing addictive personality traits. I had closing tickets, bought my seat for yesterday's matinee on an impulse, and now I want to see it *again* before closing. The producers should just adopt me. I think I was the one who took Piven out for sushi -
I'm still undecided about closing. I probably won't decide until the last minute. I want to see it again before it closes, but I think I can only handle one more. I did that with Company, completely over-indulged in the last two weeks, but that was an extenuating circumstance. And I think limited engagements are a different story when it comes to that anyway - you know it's coming, whereas with open runs, all of a sudden you have two weeks left. Anyway. I've seen STP more times than I ever planned to, as comps are utterly irresistible. But I'd like to bid it farewell.
I am, however, FINALLY going to Miscast. I've wanted to for years.
