Prince William and Kate Middleton are expecting their first child.

"Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby," read the statement released Monday. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.
"The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in Central London with Hyperemesis Gravidarum," the statement continued. "As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter."
Congrats to them and the Royal Family for their new heir to the throne.
ETA: On July 22, 2013, a son was born.

So if this baby is a girl will she be Queen one day, or do they still prefer boys? I know there was talk of change to that rule, but I never heard anything offical-like.
This child could be sixty when they become monarch, assuming the monarchy lasts that long.

Posted: 12/3/12 at 11:52amI'm not certain, but I think the child will be third in line, behind Charles and William, irrespective of gender. I'm pretty sure they changed their rules fairly recently.

Posted: 12/3/12 at 11:55amThey did change the rules to allow the first born of any gender to be crowned. After all, Elizabeth II set an excellent example of the ability of a woman to fulfill the role of a constitutional monarch. So, yes, it is Charles, William, and Little One, in that order.

Posted: 12/3/12 at 3:21pmI would assume that should William become King she will become Queen, as in Queen consort, the title wives of male British monarchs - including the late Queen Mum - have always had. It is different for the male spouse of a female British monarch (e.g. Prince Philip).

William's also the Duke of Cambridge. Once they move up one rung on the ladder, I think she will be referred to as Princess Catherine, then eventually Queen Catherine.
