Amazing!
But possible when you consider the way votes are tallied: AMPAS voters are asked to rank their favorites: all it takes is a 1/6 of the voters to vote a film "no.1" for it to score a BP nod. Films that are well liked but rank blanket 3s and 4s lose out. That's showbiz kid!
How long will it take for people to cry "racism?"

While I haven't seen all the Best Picture nominees, I have seen The Queen. While Helen Mirren is worthy of all the accolades she is receiving, the movie itself does not rate a Best Picture nom. I've heard that Dreamgirls received the most total noms with 8, but that doesn't make up for this snub.

Iwo Jima was in a class all it's own. That stole the spot from Dreamgirls and you know what? It deserved to.
Well clearly JIMA had a group of very strong supporters - see my post about how films are "ranked" by members. And never underestimate the love in Hollywood for Clint Eastwood!

Post a link, MB.
Wow. Now I need to see more movies. I thought I had seen four of the Best Picture nominees (The Departed, Dreamgirls, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen), but now I have to see Letters from Iwo Jima. Good thing I had interest in it to begin with.
Let them cry racism. To that, I'd say this: Will Smith, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy and Djimon Honsou all nominated, not to mention the numerous Latinos and Latinas and Asains nominated this year. Anyone who cries racism is as ignorant as the supposed "racists" they are admonishing.

There's no racism cry....compared to the others, it just wasn't as mindblowingly good.
I was replying to MB's post. If Matthew Knowles called the Golden Globes racist when it won Best Picture there, someone is bound to cry racism here.
It looks like all three original songs from DREAMGIRLS were nominated.
How can there be racism? Hudson and Murphy got their noms, but Bill Condon and the producers were snubbed.
Dreamgirls was an OK movie. It was nothing spectacular. I've not seen the other BP nominees (except for The Queen), but Dreamgirls got a big "Ehhh" from me when I saw it. I'm surprised at the snub, but not in disagreement with it.
I've never jumped on this racism bandwagon at the Academy Awards. It may be political but rascist, I just don't think it thinks like that.
I'm super bummed that Dreamgirls lost out on a Best Picture nomination...I think it deserved it. I'm not over the moon about Little Miss Sunshine -- thinking it's a bit overrated for my taste. And while I love Miss Hudson and want her to win more than any other person nominated in any category...I have a bit of a fear for her "lock" win now.
Does anybody have a complete list of nominations? I can only find lists with the major nominees online right now.
Actually, the snub in the BP and BD categories, in my mind, tighten the lock for Hudson and Murphy, as i'm sure Dreamgirls will be rewarded in some way.

Another example of Eastwood throwing a temper tantrum to get what he wants
Wow...THREE nominations for Dreamgirls in Original Song? That's pretty decent.

For anyone who wants a link to the nominations, the nominations are not really complete yet, so it won't be up until probably later tonight.

He made an excellent movie. Stop sounding bitter.
Clint Eastwood doesn't have to throw a temper tantrum. He's the most popluar actor/director/producer in Hollywood.
Frankly, we were all dumbasses to think he and his film wouldn't get nominated.

He still has, though. After Flags of Our Fathers failed to garner up any oscar buzz, he pissed and moaned untill WB moved Iwo Jima into 2006. He did the same thing a few years ago with Million Dollar Baby(Still easily the worst film i've ever had the misfortune of sitting through)
With the three songs from Dreamgirls nominated, any chance we'll see the stars perform them at the Oscars? If so, that would mean Beyonce (Listen), Jennifer Hudson (Love You I Do), and Eddie Murphy & Anika Noni Rose (Patience) would all perform.
I disagree ghost. Studios make those kinds of calls. They aren't going to open a film in Oscar season unless they think it has a chance at awards recognition, regardless of how much the director "whines."
MB - do you think Eastwood will win yet another Best Director Oscar, or will Scorcese finally get his due?
