I think what we're seeing with this year's Oscars is a desire to spread the love. Look at the Best Acting nominations. Only one performance, Helen Mirren in The Queen, comes from a film nominated for Best Picture. I can't ever remember that happening in years past. I think the field was pretty open this year, and lots of films took advantage.
A few other notable snubs are Volver for Best Foreign Film, the rest of the cast of The Departed, and Michael Sheen for The Queen.
ouch.

With DREAMGIRLS' three noms in the song category, I can totally see them giving it a whole portion of the show and maybe in some sort of medley style? It would be really cool and not out of the realm of possibility if they let all three girls come out Supremes-style as a TRIO to perform a snippet of the title song and then break off into abbreviated versions of their individual songs, maybe coming back together at the end. There's an opportunity to sneak a little of THE song in their too, but I think the title song is the most easily-snuck-in.
I haven't seen Iwo Jima or Flags of our Fathers yet (too many others things to see right now!) but my understanding was that WB moved up the release date of Iwo Jima based on the poor performance of Flags of our Fathers...almost as a way of getting rid of it (not that they didn't have faith in it) but I think they figured that if this saga wasn't going to perform as they expected...they would be better off releasing them close together.
They SHOULD be showing them both in theaters right now...as a double-bill.
I think the Best Directing and Best Picture race is between Babel and The Departed.

All I'm saying about it is, I want Jesus Camp for the documentary (which is one of the most terrifying things I have ever sat through, and I'm fairly religous), and that if Marky Mark gets the Best Actor award I will throw myself under a train.
I agree JRB but never underestimate the power of Clint Eastwood. He could easily steal either or both of those awards.
But I'd say BABEL for Picture and reluctantly say Scorcese for director - even though he is not liked in Hollywood.
He's nominated for Supporting Actor, Husk. Don't be so dramatic. Are you also going to contemplate suicide if Hudson (an AMERICAN IDOL reject) wins over Cate Blanchett?
Forgive my ignorance, but was it already concluded that Iwo Jima was not considered Foreign Language or for the Academy it also needs to be from a foreign country?
Yes foreign films are submitted from foreign countries. American films in foreign language are not eligible.

I can NOT believe that Dreamgirls didn't get a Best Makeup nom...
It didn't even make the run off for the makeup Oscar. Why do you think it deserved that nomination? Nothing special there.
I dont think little miss sunshine should be in for best picture ,and typical eastwood makes a **** filmn like flags of our fathers then gets the release date moved on his other film so he still has a chance.
All the songs have to be performed on the night so we will see them on stage
Remember Madonna got snubbed for eveita but still had to turn up to sing You Must Love Me as it was nominated
I think Dreamgirls was nominated where it deserved to get nominated. The movie for me certainly didn't live up to the hype and Oscar buzz it was getting. I enjoyed it, but I have to say my enjoyment had mostly to do with Jennifer Hudson.
And just a quick congrats to Ryan Gosling. I'm totally rooting for this underdog. He's amazing.
That doesn't mean they "have" to turn up to sing it. Renee Zelwegger didn't sing her nominated song from CHICAGO.
That said, I do expect all three DREAMGIRLS stars will sing the nominated songs. They'll probably pull Beyonce into "Patience" as well.
I knew that Letters from Iwo Jima getting a Best Pic nom was well within the realm of possibility, but I thought it would have bumped out Little Miss Sunshine if anything. Honestly, I'm shocked at no BP nom for Dreamgirls. I am glad though for Dreamgirls three Best Song noms. It takes me back to the days of Disney's animated movie musicals when they would dominate that category.
I hope Scorcese gets the directing award this year for a movie for which he actually deserves to win the award. I'm glad they didn't just hand it to him for fairly middling work in The Aviator and Gangs of New York.
Does anyone else find Adapted Screenplay an odd place for the Academy to honor Borat? Wasn't most of it improvised?
They had to nominate Sacha for something, TheActr97J, and it sure as hell wasn't going to be for Best Actor.
I think there is some forgetting that the entire Academy only nominates Best Film. The other awards are nominated by their field. Actors nominate actors. Writers nominate writers. Art Directors nominate Art Directors.
Doesn't this belong on the Off-Topic Board? It's about a movie.

Foster-
But a musical movie.
StageManager-
No, I actually really thing Hudson deserves the Oscar, and while Blanchett was good, I really think it should go to Hudson. And just the fact Marky Mark got nominated makes suicide worthwhile.
What, Foster? No sniping about nominating committees?
I enjoyed DREAMGIRLS on film far more than I did on stage. I'm sorry it wasn't nominated for Best Picture, but not shocked. And IMHO, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson should win. They were both fabulous.

"I dont think little miss sunshine should be in for best picture"
I think unshine was better than Dreamgirls and Babel because people like comedy. Again, only one comedy gets a nod for best picture and the rest are dramas.
Grrrr.

I think it's generally accepted that a movie based on a stage work gets discussed on the main board.
Honestly, for as much as I loved Dreamgirls (and I loved it a lot), I don't think that the snubs for Best Picture and Director are unwarranted. It's got a whole host of issues that were not fixed when moving from stage to screen (and a few more that were created in the transition). One of it's biggest problems is that it couldn't decide if it was a straightforward musical, or one of these modern apologist musicals where the raison d'etre for singing had to be something more than simply the fact that it's a musical. Since Condon didn't stick to the "all songs happen on or by a stage" explanation, had the first real book song happen 30 minutes in and had then suddenly had a song with a chunk of recitative halfway through the movie does sort of seem to be lacking in vision. Ultimately, I don't think he really deserved a nomination.

Michael Bennett- The makeup in Dreamgirls was amazing- not that they'd win but certainly a nomination was in store. I am a makeup artist as are tons of my firends and we were all shocked that there was no nomination.
Yes, Foster, thanks for coming around and not adding ANYTHING to the conversation - because ultimately, it really MATTERS where this is discussed.
GET OVER YOURSELF.
I hope Eastwood beats Scorsese again, or I hope someone does. I just don't want to see Scorsese win for this movie.
