It's slightly ignorant to say that Dreamgirls snub is based on racism when the film that got the second most number of nominations--including best picture--is Babel.
The Queen was a great film, but it had a TV movie feeling, I don't believe it deserved a nod over Dreamgirls. I wonder if the best picture will have ANY effect at all on the future of the movie musicals that are on hold, from what I understand the film is doing pretty well box-office wise so I assume there will be no apparent effect, but I still wonder.
Um...all of the racism comments were sarcastic. No one was serious.
And no. DREAMGIRLS is a hit. It will only encourage more musicals.
"That doesn't mean they "have" to turn up to sing it."
I think a better example then Renee would be the nominated songs for Yentl and it's Best Picture and Best Actress snub. Donna Summer performed "Papa Can You Hear Me" but who performed "The Way He Makes Me Feel"? My mind is blank.
Wow, I just woke up and saw this. Very surprising! I'm still mad about the nomination of DiCaprio for Blood Diamond - I liked his work in The Departed much better.
Please, let The Departed win!

Jennifer Holliday performed "The Way He Makes Me Feel." I love Jen, but that was a BIZARRE performance of that song (and she looked CRAZY with all sorts ribbons and glitter in her hair).
See, I thought it might have been her but I didn't want to sound silly if I was wrong.
Beyonce WILL be there... you can bet on it. First of all, it was wrong for the studio to push her in the Best Actress category and that's how they pay for it... I'm sure she's not that surprised to not be nominated whereas Barbra... well... is Barbra so the Yentl thing isn't really the same thing. Madonna turned out for You Must Love Me after being snubbed even if she had won the Golden Globe in the Musical/Comedy category...
As for the 'snub', I don't think it will have any repercussion on the future of musical movies... I'm more worried about the repercussions the success of Dreamgirls will have over it since I really would like to see a musical with real musical actors succeed, not singers passing themselves as actors or actors passing themselves as singers but that's a topic for another thread.
As a whole, they got some well deserved nominations, others not so deserved but just because they were deemed worthy of some more technical nominations doesn't mean they should be nominated as Best Movie.
For anyone who think the Oscars are racist, I have six words:

I think the problem with Dreamgirls was that it was marketed right from the beginning as an Oscar-baiting movie. That's not necessarily the filmmaker's fault but Paramount's. It raised the expectations for the film immensely. The film was crafted very well and even though it may not necessarily have been the best film of the year, if it was marketed differently, it could have made it on the list. All the buzz (a product of the studio's) made it uncool to think that Dreamgirls was a worthy picture.
Anyway, I'm just glad Jennifer Hudson and Ryan Gosling were both nominated.
Two things:
ANIKA NONI ROSE total snub..she sparkles in every frame of that film.
The reason DREAMGIRLS didn't get nominated? That god awful ending where Jamie Foxx makes his way down to the front and realizes that the weeping little girl is his daughter. GAG ME.
Totally pulls the focus off of the girls and Effie and her ultimate triumph. It ruins the movie for me.

Without a song of her own (and I wouldn't count "Patience") there was no way in hell Rose was going to get a nomination.
While I didn't like the ending of the movie, I don't think that's the reason it didn't get a nomination for best picture.
I don't think its directly the reason it didn't get nominated, but it certainly would have helped if DREAMGIRLS had a more satisfying conclusion.
CHICAGO has one of the most satisfying endings of any movie musical. And whats it they say - leave em with a big finish?

Two words.......Beatrice Straight
Oh if voters really loved DREAMGIRLS, a nomination for Rose was entirely possible. Queen Latifah was a surprise nominee for CHICAGO.
To be fair, singingbackup, that's exactly how the stage musical ended.
And, Michael, Bennett, I was not impressed nor satisfied by CHICAGO's finale. I thought it was weak compared to the marvelous prolog. In fact, the second half of the movie was weak.

No, it's not.
If Matthew Knowles called the Golden Globes racist when it won Best Picture there, someone is bound to cry racism here.
When/where did he say that?!
singingbackup you're completely right about the ending. It did kind of ruin what was otherwise going so well, and unfortunately it was not an acting thing on Jamie or the young girl's part. What was this girl supposed to be weeping for, because her mother was finally getting her due, and if so, wouldn't they be tears of joy. She looked like someone just shot her puppy. For the record, I am in no way, shape, or form faulting the young girl's performance. I hope you all realize that. It was just a badly directed moment in an otherwise good film and it may have cost Condon his nom, but I love his work on the film otherwise. I am not upset about the Best Picture snub because I haven't seen all the other films, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were all better. I know 'Little Miss Sunshine' was.
Secondly, since I have read all of the posts and NO ONE has said anything about this being a race thing, could we please
stop stoning people who aren't there.
will the best picture snub at the oscars have an effect on DREAMGIRLS' box office numbers?
of course. If it had been nominated for BEST PICTURE, it would have made more money at the Box Office than it will without. Makes sense right?
But 8 nominations is till a lot to publicize. They do have that to go on. Most news sites just say "DREAMGIRLS and BABEL top Oscar nominations." A lot of people probably don't dig any deeper than that.
DREAMGIRLS will easilly clear 100 M - its just not going to get up to CHICAGO's 170M
And the DVD is out May 1st so thre's still plento o' dough to be had.
Why would Oscar be a racist guy? He gave friggin' Crash the Best Picture award last year.
i hate when the "race card" is used. look at the diversity of this year's nominees.

An effort to prove how much he isn't a racist triggered by white man's "liberal" guilt?
OH GOD.
STOP WITH THE RACE THING!
No one actually said the race thing with a straight face. We were joking around.
