Well like it or not, makeup for the Oscars tends to be special effects oriented. Sort of like how costume design is almost always reserved for "period" films. We did get some breakouts this year (in costumes) with PRADA and THE QUEEN. If you ask me - THE QUEEN deserved a makeup nod over DREAMGIRLS.
WHAT? I'm seriously considering boycotting the Oscars this year. (Yeah, one viewer, so what?) Dreamgirls was one of the best films I've seen all year and deserved that nod. It's a real shame what bull**** these academies pull off.

When will people learn that in today's Hollywood, it's the anti-American element that is rewarded.
Oh, you mean rather than the anti-white?

I knew Condon should have made Deena a commie.
WTF IS GOING ON!?
This sucks.
What happened to that thing you knew for a fact? DEPARTED vs. DREAMGIRLS? BABEL doesn't have a chance?
MMMMMMMMMMM.....
Are you talking to me, Munk? I always said BABEL was the frontrunner, even when nobody wanted to believe me.

Please define who the "anti-American element" is and then crawl back to Freep where you belong, wingnut homophobe.
To answer another question, "Borat"'s screenplay is considered an adaptation because the film is based on a character created for a television series. Since most films based on television characters have never been seriously discussed as Oscar contenders until now, it's been nothing to worry about.
Michael Bennett: No, not you at all.
Nope, munk's talking to me.
And I do have to admit you were right munk.
Should I say it louder?

jv92, I'll boycott, too.
If Dreamgirls isn't nominated. Give the prize to Little Miss Sunshine. Finally award a comedy for God's sake!
Besides the fact that it's a musical, Dreamgirls isn't oscar worthy by any standards. I think it's good that they got so many "technical" nominations but overall the movie doesn't prevail as one that will stay in cinema history (not that all nominees did in the previous years but well...).
Of course they were going to be nominated in the Best Song Category! If they can't get Beyonce on stage during the award show, what's the point of even giving even a nod to the movie? ratings are almost as important as the awards now!
Bingo!
At least it will be an exciting show this year, with musical performances by Eddie Murphy, Anika Noni Rose, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, and Keith Robinson.

Dreamgirls was a good movie but totally overrated. It was filled with good performances which were recorgnized. The movie did not deserve a nomination. The other films nominated were better.

the best pictures of the year in my opinion were The Queen, Little Miss Sunshine, Little Children, and The Children of Men so I am very happy that all of them were recognized in some way especially Jackie Earle Hayley and Abigail Breslin. Ryan Gosling's and Mark Wahlberg's nominations made me happy too!
As for Dreamgirls, I agree with the acting nominations and the snub of Best Picture. The only one of the nominees I havent seen is Letters from Iwo Jima but I already named my top four and that didnt include the Departed and Babel both of which I found to be better films than Dreamgirls, as well done as it was. If I had to pick the nominees, I would have left it out too.
While outright racism may not be much of a factor with awards, the reality is that people tend to vote for films with which they most identify - even if that means the testosterone/general spirit of The Departed.
I don't think Dreamgirls was "snubbed" at all. I feel like the film was recognized in the categories in which it deserved to be. The film was good, not stellar, and the direction was okay. The performances were great, as was the music.

There is NOTHING racist about this years Oscars. 3 of the major acting cat will be won by African American actors (Whitaker, Murphy and Hudson). Hell look at last years winner for Best Picture.
i'm in shock..i think the academy is on crack..the movie with the most nods out of all of them isn't good enough to get a best picture nod?? i mean i know that's not how it works..it's almost like the academy is saying haha it didn't get a best picture nod after all.
Though we will never know for sure, common sense says that DREAMGIRLS probably was the 6th or 7th in line for BP nom. As has been said before - it had to be ranked number 1 by 1/6 of the Academy. 100 percent of the Academy could have ranked it number 2 on their ballot for Best Picture and it would have still lost the nomination.
It's a good film. It's a great musical, but it's not a best picture. But that's okay because I really believe it has helped in the revival of the musical as a viable film genre (along with "Chicago"). Seriously, remember how dead the musical was before "Chicago." Moribund. Finished. Now, studios have a second film to garner a handful of oscars. There will be more. So let's congradulate the makers for their accomplishments. And it intorduced Jennifer Hudson and reintroduced us to Eddie Murphy. That makes it a great movie.
Just not a best picture.
I can live with that.
Well said (and very informed), Michael Bennett. Thank you.
Let's CONGRATULATE them, too.
I'm happy with the way this worked out. I felt that Iwo Jima would somehow get in that mix, and it deserves to.
two things:
I think it's interesting that Dreamgirls got a sound mixing nod, but not sound editing.
and now I'm torn, becuase I would love for Dreamgirls to win costume design, but I also really want Devil wears Prada to win as well. I think that is a tough call.
