We all know the real reason DREAMGIRLS was snubbed. She intercepted all the ballots and scratched DREAMGIRLS off of them.
She's to blame.
Who dat?
whew, "scratched." thank god you didn't let the truth be known that she threatened to eat any voter who picked dreamgirls (and not in the yum, yum, faster, faster, a little to the left, oh god yes right f*cking there, don't stop no matter how hard my thighs squeeze your ears way but more in the land shark mode).
Papa you just brought up visuals that have scarred people for life. I hope your happy with yourself.
Its a shame dreamgirls has been over looked for best picture because it was a great film.
Dreamgirls is a hell of lot better than chicago was,the jump cutty editing on chicago and the flashy direction was awfull
lol... I don't think she has eaten a lot these days!
I don't think DREAMGIRLS has anything on CHICAGO.
You are bashing CHICAGO's editing? DREAMGIRLS looks like it was edited with a chainsaw.
CHICAGO is a 4 star movie, while DREAMGIRLS is probably a solid 3.
I have to agree with munk, songanddance. Chicago is definitely a superior film in my opinion, and the editing was better.
Oh please the one thing all the critics pointed out about chicago was how bad it was cut(all flash and cut shots so you could never focus on a routine etc)
Dreamgirls editing is fine, not the best but fine
And dreamgirls overal rating in the US and the UK is a 4 star film
I disagree. IMO Dreamgirls is far superior to Chicago on just about every level.
Chicago was like watching and MTV video it was so flashy
Yet look at the stage show it works because of its simplicity and the music
Actually, song and dance man, the editing of CHICAGO is so fantastic and brilliant that it is rumoured to actually have made the film appear even better than it was actaully going to be.
I don't remember where I read this, I'm sure someone will back this up, but CHICAGO was in some sort of trouble before it was edited - and they say it was saved in the editing room. CHICAGO is expertly done.
I'm not even saying DREAMGIRLS is bad. I'm just saying CHICAGO is a little better.
"IMO Dreamgirls is far superior to Chicago on just about every level."
IMO such scenes/songs in Dreamgirls as "We Are A Family" or "Listen" were hard to take seriously. I thought I was the only one who felt that way until I realized many people around me were giggling.

I do think CHICAGO is slightly better.
That leaves the music and the flashy dance routines to carry the show. Here, Chicago's Rouge envy really takes shape, with each new sequence trying desperately to blow our socks off. The effort proves more exhausting than exhilarating; without a proper sense of pacing, the thunder and noise have nowhere towards which to build. . The choreography, based on Bob Fosse's original stage production, has sparkle, but remains all but hidden beneath the bombastic art direction and MTV edits.

thats just a snippet of 1 review i found
IMO: DREAMGIRLS would've worked better had "Family" and "It's All Over" been excised and replaced with actual dialog, and not used too many (unnecessary) fade-outs.
Other than that, I enjoyed the film, maybe slightly better than CHICAGO.

Chicago is a better movie. However, a little disappointed for the lack of Best Picture nominee for Dreamgirls. Reminds me of when Cabaret WON eight Academy Awards, but lost best picture. I was thinking that if Dreamgirls won for all it was nominated, it could match that record. Of course, it then hit me that the most it can win is six as three nominations are in the same category.
I'm happy that Dreamgirls is getting attention, but it is a VERY uneven film. I'm not shocked its not on the list.

StageManager, "It's all Over" was one of my favs.
Here's hoping all of today's nods were typos.
Oh, and landryjames, two can win because it's the same composers.
How did the title of this thread get changed, and can we change it back?
While Best Art Direction *should* go to THE PRESTIGE (easily the most solidly gorgeous film of the candidates listed), I have no doubt they'll give it to DG, because the tech awards are usually the ones given out as the "We're sorry we didnt nominate you for BP, so here's a consolation prize".
'Twas papa, sidjones09 (what else is new?).
I agree husk_charmer. I walked into my moms room and told her without any kidding that I just saw the scariest movie I'd ever seen: Jesus Camp.
I agree Josephine.
And hey, I'm not bashine DREAMGIRLS. I've seen it several times - I love it - I'll buy it - I hope it wins everything it's nominated for.
But there's no denying that it's not brilliant.
I didn't think "Listen" was funny, but I did think "Family" was total camp. I was definitely giggling.
But I don't know that that was Condon's fault - I think it's an awful song in general.
I don't know why the couldn't nominate Cohen as best actor for Borat. I think he did some of the best work of the season.
