NO true, Munk. Family works quite well on stage.
'Family' is one of the highlights of this musical, but it just didn't work in the film, but on stage, it is a great moment and the song really does work.

I just don't like the lyrics.
I agree. "Family" worked better when I saw it on stage. In the film version, it just took me right out of the action and emotion of the film. I don't know what it was-- maybe the the "staging," maybe the sterile white environment, maybe the camera angles. I'm no film critic, but I just didn't think the scene had any sincerity to it.

I'm frankly surprised that Michael Bennett, a poster whom I greatly admire, did the premptive "false" racism thing.
Get a sense of humor.
I'll sort of give you that munk. The lyrics are a little cheesy, which is something we are more readily able to accept on the stage than on the screen, hence the failure of this scene/song in the film.
"...because of how you feel."
Oh, your feelings aren't important.
HORRID.

munkustrap178, with all due respect, you hardly have a sense of humor yourself. And when I say hardly, I'm being generous.
I understand what you're saying, but he is referring to Effie's feelings of having to take a step back in the group not getting in the way of them all reaching their ultimate dreams of success. But you're right, it is kind of used in general, but in the context of the moment, I think it works.

Oh, your feelings aren't important.
That's not what he's saying there, at least I never took it that way.
I do think the song is problematic in the film, but mainly because Effie and CC actually have family, while it's implied onstage that they do not.
It's a shame that Dreamgirls didn't get a nomination for best picture. But it still got 8 nominations, which is 8 more than Rent and The Producers got (both of which I thought were enjoyable, but had major glaring flaws).
As far as the song "Family" goes, I thought it was a little weird in the film, but I can imagine that it works out much better on stage. I think that the song itself is a great one.
angry...but congrats eddie and jen
Maybe they wanted to give Keith Robinson something to sing. Honestly, I can't think of a good reason why "Family" was kept in the film.

I think FAMILY is needed dramatically. I suppose they could have used plain dialogue to convince Effie to relax and let Curtis make the lead singer change...but logic wouldn't have convinced Effie to make the sacrife.. emotion/music could sway her. Thats why I think its important.
However, I think Condon was a less confident in his filming of the song. He took a shy approach to filming the "book" songs. An approach that, to me, comes off a little second guessing.
I found the Family scene to be really great in the beginning, with Effie's part. It's just so seamless and magical.
Then C.C. starts singing and our sense of elevation crashes in the Bremuda Triangle.
A TRAGEDY!
I think the producers of the oscars were counting for Dreamgirls to be nominated. I think they planned alot of their "fun-pre-show-monlogue" stuff around it.
I have a hunch Ellen will be wearing a dress in dreamgirls style. She alludes to it on her talk show.

Ya know I thought Family was great. It was very moving, as it is on stage.
Now, the lyrics aren't the BEST but I don't think any one could say much of the lyrics in Dreamgirls are all that brilliant. They get their job done, though.

The lyrics in the show are "eh" at best.
"Family" is awful in the film. It stops the film in its tracks.
While I believe Jennifer Hudson's "What about me? What about how I feel" et al is heart-breaking, I agree that "Family" feels out of place and it's an awkward introduction to the first book song in the film.
Having said that, I don't think "Family" is the reason the movie did not get a much-deserved Oscar nod for Best Picture.
I think the movie needed to OWN the fact that they were a musical. Is it so wrong to have a character burst into song? No, as long as it established early on and you feel the characters sincerity, I think.

I agree with you Mateo, the book songs were approached so timidly.
I thought it would be a lock
It did deserve a best Pic Nod . Sometimes, the academy astounds people with their omissions. This is one time
I really want to see Peter O Toole win for Best Actor & not have to content himself with a Lifetime Achievement. This is the Academys way of saying Oops
Sorry Affleck was overlooked for Hollywoodland as well
