Dustin Hoffman. - As much as I truly respect Gene Hackman, I'm a huge fan of Dustin's work in "Rainman"
Bill Murray - Chevy Chase is great in the National Lampoon movies, but Bill Murray is a more versatile actor. But I might be tainted because he was living in Rome at the same time that I was (filming a movie called "The Life Aquatic". Some of my friends met him and say he's a lovely man)
Meryl Streep - She's incredible. And even though I hated that damn "Music of the Heart" movie, she still wins because I'm afraid of Julianne Moore, who has creeped me out ever since that Delicious Dish sketch about Sorgam on SNL. Anyone? Anyone?
Frank Sinatra - My Grandma is one of Frank Sinatra's biggest fans. We actually stopped at a random watch store in NYC because they had a temporary Sinatra exhibit that she had to check out. So I was sorta raised on his music.
I refuse to choose between Michael Moore and Rush Limbaugh. I think that they're both morons in their own way. Brilliant idiots, mind you. Extremists have a tendency to ignore the well made points of the other side and argue their ideas into the ground instead of looking for a compromise, because the goal becomes "winning" instead of "making good decisions".
Steven Spielberg - He makes the films that will be classics that I'll force my Grandchildren to watch on our old VHS player on the TV with the old-fashioned 2D screen.
Elton John - This was hard. I do enjoy Billy Joel's music. Elton won because of the outfits.
George Orwell - Sadly, I mostly chose him over Bradbury because "Big Brother" is the best reality show EVER and without him it would be called something really stupid. Like "Candid House", ""The House with All the Cameras and Microphones", or "Linda Tripp's House".
Simon - Simon is the better writer. Garfunkel is the better singer. And anyone that argues with that is wrong. The end. But Simon wins because I love the music video for "You Can Call Me Al". (heh. Too bad that even that video couldn't save Chevy Chase in the battle against Bill Murray above...)
Rodgers - Hammerstein was an insane drunk. Rodgers was a genius who was able to work in collabortive efforts with several lyricists, as well as work alone (No Strings), and for that he wins.
Bush or Kerry? If you thought I'd answer this, you haven't been paying attention. I dislike both Bush and Kerry (for what I believe to be valid reasons). I know who I'll vote for, but I don't like him well enough to proclaim my preference here. May the better man win.
Gene Hackman or Dustin Hoffman?
Both are legends. Both are great friends. Both flunked out of acting school together. It is hard to pick between such fine talents and men, but I beleive Gene Hackman is perhaps one of the finest actors ever and can handle anything with ease, icluding terriffic comic timing as in THE BIRDCAGE. However, I must say that Dustin Hoffman wins if not only for the pure range and difficulty in his roles. Tootsie, Rainman, Kramer vs. Kramer, Hook. Hoffman can do it all. He is perhaps not more talented than Gene, but he challenges himself artistically more than many actors dare to. And he hits the mark each time.
Bill Murray or Chevy Chase?
Not a difficult choice. Chevy Chase is hilarious, witty and a great actor (as well as being integral to the creation of SNL). But he cannot hold a candle to Bill Murray, one of the finest comic actors that film will ever produce. One must only watch one of his movies to see his sheer brilliance. And LOST IN TRANSLATION cements his genius and shows off acting chops that Chevy could only dream of. Watch CADDYSHACK, a movie with both Chase and Murray. Chase is funny, but Murray is hysterical and a riot, while surprisingly poetic.
Meryl Streep or Julianne Moore?
I have racked my brain trying to choose. So, as neither lady needs to be praised, for both are acting goddesses. I will say Meryl wins by perhaps 0.0001%. And it is hard for me to go against Julianne for anything, as she is immensely talented and insanely gorgeous. Give her an Oscar already.
Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis, Jr?
Sammy Davis. Sinatra is an icon. But Davis was a performer like no other.
Michael Moore or Rush Limbaugh?
Both are only in it to promote extremist agendas and make money. Both need to learn that anger gets you nowhere. But I will pick Moore for two reasons 1) he is more honest and 2) BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE.
Steven Spielberg or Mike Nichols?
As one poster already said, why make perfection compete. But perhaps it should be Speilberg. For his work is more universal. But damn I love Nichols.
Billy Joel or Elton John?
Both are idols of mine. Both have written/sung some of the best songs of all-time. But while Joel is a legend, Elton is even more...he is an icon. And I enjoy his music slightly more.
Ray Bradbury or George Orwell?
Both of these authors complement each other so well. But Bradbury has a way of having his thought so effortlessly flow to paper, it is insane. Orwell wrote the better single book, 1984, but all together I would have to pick Bradbury.
Simon or Garfunkel?
Garfunkel had, of course, the better voice. But Simon's lyrics and songs spoke to a generation so profoundly, even if he did do it over 30 years before I was born. Simon is not only a tremendously talented singer/songwriter, but as good a poet as you're likely to find.
Rodgers or Hammerstein?
Hammerstein. Seems like the nicer guy. And his lyrics are so prosaic and beautiful.
Bush or Kerry?
Kerry.
*bump*
Oh you geek.
Still bumping this thread.
You don't see me going around bumping my New York Trip thread or my Tony Prom Dress thread, or even Shakalaka Flowery.
What's up with this?

*gasp* This is evil, but I'll try to decide...
Gene Hackman
Bill Murray (that one was easy)
Julianne Moore (I think...)
Um...Sinatra, I guess.
Michael Moore. At least he's an obnoxious prat who's closer to my side.
Erm...Spielberg. Because he made ET.
Elton John
Ray Bradbury (book-wise, at least- essays are different)
Simon, just because.
Hammerstein, who on top of his work gave us Sondheim.
Kerry

Dustin Hoffman (Gene Hackman never pronounces the "g"s on the ends of words and it makes me CRAZY)
Bill Murray because he can get through a scene without visibly laughing at his own cleverness.
Meryl Streep
Sammy Davis Jr. because Frankie butchered the lyrics of every songwriter he ever covered and his phrasing was always wrong.
Michael Moore
Steven Spielberg or Mike Nichols - I cannot choose - they are both wonderful
Billy Joel and Elton John are about equal to each other in my opinion so I can't choose between the two of them either.
Ray Bradbury
Art Garfunkel because of his rendition of "99 Miles from LA"
Rodgers
KERRY.
"Sammy Davis Jr. because Frankie butchered the lyrics of every songwriter he ever covered and his phrasing was always wrong."
Swear to God, redhot, if there was a man for me, it would be YOU.
Oh Rath - its just that all my life his lack of musicality has rubbed me the wrong way...I'd rather listen to nails on a chalkboard than hear a Frank Sinatra totally massacre a beautiful lyric. His voice was Ok - but not good enough to make me forgive his bad phrasing..
And if I were into women - oh well - but thats a story for another day...LOL..
Lord, redhot, I've never found ANYONE who agreed with me on the Sinatra thing!! I've always felt exactly the way you have and have never understood the whole legend phenomena. What a relief...
Gene Hackman
Bill Murray by a landslide
Juliane Moore
Frank Sinatra
Rush Limbaugh
Mike Nichols
Elton John and Billy Joel
Ray Bradbury
Paul Simon
both
George W. Bush

Gene Hackman or Dustin Hoffman?
Bill Murray or Chevy Chase?
Bill Murray. Chevy Chase is funny, but I have yet to see him pull off serious.
Meryl Streep or Julianne Moore?
No contest. Meryl.
Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis, Jr?
Frank. Sammy just isn't crazy enough.
Michael Moore or Rush Limbaugh?
Michael Moore. Rush is kuh-ray-zee.
Steven Spielberg or Mike Nichols?
Steven...need I pull the Schindler's List card?
Billy Joel or Elton John?
Billy Joel. His musicals have some sort of originality. And his lyrics are always sweet (in the surfer sort of "sweet" way).
Ray Bradbury or George Orwell?
Orwell. He's a genius.
Simon or Garfunkel?
Both or neither.
Rodgers or Hammerstein?
Rogers
Bush or Kerry?
Kerry. No doubt. Bush likes to kill children. Kerry likes to provide health coverage so that when Bush tries to kill them, they can go to the emergency room.

Hackman (Hoffman is always "ACTING," all ticks and affectations and never seems "real" to me -- he wears his technique on his sleeve, while you can never catch Hackman acting)
Murray (by a mile -- in 30 years, Chase has never made me so much as crack a smile ..... painfully unfunny)
Streep AND Moore (no reason to choose)
Sinatra as an actor; Davis as everything else
Moore
Nichols (as actor/comedian and director; Spielberg doesn't have his depth and breadth of talent)
John
Orwell
Garfunkel (I've met Simon a few times -- a complete and total jerk)
Rodgers (though Hammerstein as a book writer is as seminal a figure in the history of the American theatre as anyone else)
Kerry
I think the pairings here are kinda weak in comparison, but I'll give it a go anyway...

Rath - you'd love my best friend in florida also - he will pick up the phone and call me during the day at work just to say that Frankie is murdering some song in the background and then go on to site examples of how it should be sung. There ARE a few of us Sinatra haters out there - but I guess the numbers are small...
We should start a club.
The worst thing he ever did, in my opinion, was not only to ruin New York, New York, but to convince the masses that that was how the song was done. Sickening.
I raise my glass to Fred, John, and Liza.
