Glad LuPone got a nom...I thought for sure they'd stop at Benanti.
No idea why Stokes Mitchell got a nom.

Posted: 4/29/11 at 11:51amSo sad that Aaron Tviet got overlooked again, when even Tom Wopat (in a decent featuring role), and Kerry Butler (in a sad throwaway of a role that one great song does not make) got nominated.

Posted: 4/29/11 at 12:22pmI really hope Aaron Tveit doesn't get overlooked for the Tonys again...I can't believe Kerry Butler got nominated and not him. Also sad at the lack of love for Angels in America, though I'm happy Zachary Quinto at least got a nomination as he was wonderful. I'm happy to see all the love for Hello Again though, I absolutely loved it.

I think Josh Gad "borrows heavily" from Chris Farley and while I love BOM, I dont think his performance is that outstanding.
Andrew Rannells has the heavier lifting and deserves the nod.

Posted: 4/29/11 at 1:13pmI loved Gad but I think he had the more likable role and the showier material. Rannells, I think, deserves the nod over him, just for his big second act number alone.

^^ Agreed. I mean I may be biased, but I thought Frank Wildhorn would've snagged a nomination for the music at least, especially since it covers so many styles.
Looks like WONDERLAND will be getting full-out snubbed.

I liked the music from People.
Glad that Colin Donnell got a nomination, I hope he gets a Tony too.
Laura Osnes has a thankless role and didn't deserve that nomination, but congrats anyways. Other than that, quite happy with the nominations.

The role isn't what gets you nominated though. It's what you DO with it. If a role is thankless, and an actress manages to do the most with it, is that not an admirable feat? I agree that her role is thankless, but it doesn't mean she isn't doing a good job. Those are two completely different things.

I haven't seen Sister Act yet, but I get the feeling that Sutton Foster is going to win the Tony for best actress.
Is Book of Mormon a lock for the Tony? Does any show have a chance at this point?

"I am just astounded at the egregious snub of "Angels in America" for Best Revival of a Play! I'm baffled at the general lack of love for this glorious Off-Broadway revival. Did people just not see it? It should be winning every award in sight!"
Me too, Chad. Quinto definitely deserves his nomination, but I really don't understand why Angels didn't catch fire the way Normal Heart has, which is what I expected it to do. At the very least Borle and Best Revival of a Play should also have been nominated.

Agreed.
Or...I would have given the ensemble award to ANGELS (yes...I even adored Zoe Kazan) and let Mantello, Barkin and Hickey compete in the individual categories.
And yes...Hope is a completely thankless role. But what Osnes does with it is magic. Brava to her.

I am once again surprised with the nominations for "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown." I am also again surprised that Norbert's role in "Catch Me if You Can" is considered a lead role when I always thought it was a supporting one. I'm disappointed that Aaron Tveit was snubbed. I am happy for Sutton Foster, Daniel Radcliffe, Laura Osnes, Patina Miller, Colin Donnell, and Andrew Rannells.

I'm happy for LuPone & Benanti. I think BSM got a nom because he's funny and has a killer voice unlike most others. He turned **** into gold.
SO happy Yazbek got recognized for his beautiful score!! Deservedly so.

Posted: 4/29/11 at 2:52pmIt's also disappointing that "Catch Me if You Can" did not get a nomination for Best Musical. Also Patti once again got her nomination because she is the "LEGENDARY PATTI LUPONE."

"Looks like WONDERLAND will be getting full-out snubbed"
is it still considered a snub if the show is plain bad?
Loving the WOMAN ON THE VERGE love! except i don't understand how Brian was nominated for that...

Also Patti once again got her nomination because she is the "LEGENDARY PATTI LUPONE."
Patti is getting nominated because it's a weak category this year. Her being Patti helps, but if there were any standout performances from shows still open this season, Patti wouldn't be getting nominated for things.

Posted: 4/29/11 at 4:40pmOdd that WOMEN ON THE VERGE wasn't nominated for its lyrics, which I think are quite fabulous. "Model Behavior" is certainly the best song, lyrically speaking, of the season.

Odd that WOMEN ON THE VERGE wasn't nominated for its lyrics, which I think are quite fabulous.
That was the first thing I noticed! What the hell??? I'm happy he was nominated for his music, but the lyrics are masterful wordplay, bordering on Sondheimian in both structure and content. Model Behavior is the most complex patter song I've heard since the Witch's entrance in Into the Woods. Microphone is the only number that feels weak to me (though I thought it worked well enough on stage). I would have given Burstein or Guarini a nod over Stokes Mitchell. And I think Patti's nomination is very well-deserved. Her Lucia was gutsy, aggressive, tortured and poignant (pretty spot-on if you've seen the film), not to mention quite funny (her bit with the mirror stopped the show). It wasn't her name that earned a nomination. It was the right person in the right role who was very well-directed. Lucia fit her like a glove and she demonstrated the depth of her interpretation from her first number, Time Stood Still.
