Wizard of Oz is so iconic, i think it should be on a list by itself. Agree totally with West Side Story being #2. Sound of Music is #3
These are Movie-Musicals, not Musicals.
I wouldn't trust a magazine that has only recently started including Broadway in their issues as a touch stone of this subject.
=sigh=
Little Shop and Hedwig will forever go unnoticed.
EW needs to hire me. Seriously. That list was ridiculous.
The fact that South Park:B,L&U made the list makes me smile... I love that movie!

Why no Guys and Dolls or Kiss Me, Kate?
Another vote down for Seven Brides and Seven Brothers. It's alright but I rather see Evita. A few I haven't seen. I agree with LSOH, it is just so catchy. I enjoy Singin in the Rain but did that deserve to be so far up the list? I consider the source though.
Can't believe I didn't see the King and I? Did I go through the list too fast? South Park? Humm...funny but best Musical? Even Movie Musical? Makes me wonder.

What is this list? Movie musicals, musicals, hybrid?
South Park? Please.
The fact that "Once" is there in place of all the other possible best musicals makes me gag
They really needed to add My Fair Lady and Oliver. Both are terrific films, and took home the Oscar for Best Picture. But Once? I didn't think it was that great of a film. My Fair Lady was 100 times better as was Oliver.

The only thing that surprises me more than not seeing Fiddler and All that Jazz on the list is the apparent lack of love for them in this thread.

Fiddler is one of my favorite musicals. Frankly I'm just so stunned by this that I didn't even start thinking about the myriad of musicals that should be on this list.
I forgot about Oliver! I love that movie
I can't believe THE KING & I didn't make it but HAIRSPRAY and SEVEN WIVES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS did. That's pretty absurd.
MOULIN ROUGE, DREAMGIRLS (yes, it had awkward musical moments but when it was unabashedly musical, it was mind-blowing), THE KING & I, and HEDWIG all needed to be there.
CHICAGO and THE SOUND OF MUSIC should have made the top 5, or at least the top 10.
I can't wait to see SWEENEY, NINE, and MAMMA MIA! and rate them among these other great musicals.
well my top 5 are in the list (Cabaret, Wizard of Oz, On the Town, Singin in the Rain, An American in Paris) but "South Park" - seriously?
what about "All That Jazz" and "Grease 2" or "Xanadu"?
What happend to little shop of horrors?
I actually love Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. I was happy to see it on the list.
and "rocky horror" and "nightmare before christmas" are absent
People get so touchy when their shows are not recognized.
Don't worry, I was about to go, "What!? This as an outrage! How could they omit -- " and then I saw it. All good.
But really... no modern musical should make this list.
Hello?????????? Where's Fiddler? How can Beauty and the Beast and South Park even be considered? They are cartoons!!!!

Oh please...
(and funny that you say that, but list the Hairspray site as your blog...)

FYI re: South Park -- no less an authority on musical theatre than Stephen Sondheim himself called South Park the best original musical (stage, film or otherwise) to come along in a decade and he even wrote a fan letter to the creators of it (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) to sing their praises.

Oh geeze I just stopped reading after I saw Southpark was ahead of Meet Me in St. Louis. Those don't even deserve to be anywhere in the same ballpark.
Plus, South Park could boast the genius of Marc Shaiman.
(And I changed the title to placate anyone confused...)

I would add All That Jazz and FAME to the list..
and I might be in the minority - but Li'L Abner too
