Hello! My birthday is coming up soon and I'm asking for 3 CD's from shows this season (I don't have any from this season so far). What should I ask for? I'm thinking DRS, Putnam Spelling Bee, Spamalot(?)...I also might ask for the new Assassins recording from last season. Is it any good? Worth asking for? Others suggestions? Thanks!!!

Little Women
Putnam Spelling Bee
Light in the Piazza
What type of shows do you generally like because the ones from this season run the gammut?
The two differences between your list and Iluv's list are VERY different.
Stick with your original idea. DRS, Bee and Spam seem like pretty good choices.
I would say:
Light in the Piazza - gorgeous
Spamalot - hilarious
I haven't seen Spelling Bee and was disappointed with Little Women's score. I enjoy DRS's score, but I don't know how you would like it if you haven't seen it. Did you see it?
smartpenguin..i like anything and everything which doesn't help the problem. For example, I could listen to RENT, Wicked, The Wild Party, Company, and West Side Story and love them all.

Before seeing CastAlbumFan's reply, I was going to post along the same lines. Although DRS is the only show I've seen ... I think you should go with your own first instincts and get those three.

Then I would run with one from each style
such as: Light in the Piazza, DRS, Bee
or Little Women, Spamalot, DRS
all the below are my opinions on the shows
Spamalot: Very funny, not great musically but passible, unconventional
Bee: Lyrics are fabulous the music is very small though and not catchy, unconventional
DRS: My overall favorite, catchy tunes and funny lyrics, but probably better if you have seen the show, conventional
Piazza: Great, soft, heartfelt score, artistic
Little Women: in the heartfelt category, conventional musical
Broklyn: I have not seen or heard, the music clips had a bit of a bad ripoff of Rent meets screeching to try to be like Wicked vibe to me.
Assassins: I love it, and it is essential Sondheim, but many say get the OBCR which I do not have. I fell the same about Pacific Overtures, I love the revival, but the general thought is the original is better.

I think a part of me just died when you said that Penguin.
spamalot's really not worth getting imho... i own it but don't forsee repeat listening.
i'd say drs, spelling bee, and piazza for this season
I was totally not trying to insult either Wicked or RENT, I was trying to find the best way I could think of to describe it based on the totally tiny part I have heard.
TGIF: Please don't die because of me. I am a lowly penguin and apologize.
*hugs RENT OBCR*
I'll survive, Penguin, but it will take awhile.

TGIF: If you come back in here, check it out I edited to what I was actually thinking, but tried to be nice and not say.
I heard that SPAMALOT is much like THE PRODUCERS in that you can't really replay the songs and enjoy them unless you are actually at the show. Is SPELLING BEE easier to listen to with catchier songs?
Your orginal three seem like fine choices, but also consider:
Little Women
Caroline, or Change
or...Rent(if you do not already have this)
I totally agree with Qfan. Go with DRS, Spam and Assassins.
<--------Look at Ruprecht. Don't you just love him?! Get DRS NOW!
Spam isn't as bad as Producers. I replay all the Sara Ramirez songs and quite a few others. People like to bash Spam but it's alot of fun. And hearing Sara Ramirez sing just one song is worth it.
I love love love the new Assassins! It's one of the best cds I own. It's just perfection!
DRS (great even if you have not seen it)
Little Women
RENT
if you own RENT, then Caroline, or change
1. DRS
2. LITTLE WOMEN (they really did a VERY nice job with this one)
3. SPELIING BEE
light in the piazza.
