ATC has been unavailable since Nov. 9th. Supposedly issues with their updating. Similarly, it broke down in August for several days. Anyone here with inside information on what's going on there?
No, but they desperately need a new platform and have for a decade. They have an older audience who posts (and sometimes are incredibly knowledgable) and have always been reluctant to overhaul but it feels like something designed with plug ins that are technically out of date.
“I knew who I was this morning, but I've changed a few times since then.”
Until someone mentions it on this board, I completely forget ALL THAT CHAT even exists. I used to post on there decades ago and haven’t visited it in well over a decade. Its format stayed in that old 90s design and annoying to navigate. You clicked on a topic and a cluttered thread of out-of-sequence posts would follow. Too much work trying to navigate what was what.
I lurked on a thread there years ago, in which the board administrators initiated a discussion by asking for suggestions to improve the board. People responded by suggesting things like preserving old threads rather than deleting them, improving the formatting, etc. The administrators then responded individually to most - possibly all - suggestions to say that the idea wasn't viable for one reason or another: money, current technical capabilities, etc. It's their board and they can do what they like with it, but it seemed a weird exercise for the administrators to undertake. Maybe things have changed since, but back then there seemed to be an ambivalence, at the very least, about making just about any improvements to the site.
Most people have moved on from that website. Most theater talk and theater offers are on other platforms now. The toxic attitude and groupthink of the few remaining members are a hard pass for me.
Yeah, they're pretty much down to the same dozen or so people doing 90% of the posts. So unless you can't live without Wayman's "funny" puns or that west coast lady yammering on about her husband's sci-fi conventions, there's really nothing of interest over there.
Both the BroadwayWorld message board and All That Chat offer their fair share of very knowing and knowledgeable theater lovers, which is why I regularly read (and post on) them. Opinions on both boards run the gamut from informative and insightful to angry and aggravating. Each place also boasts unique voices, like Jordan Catalano's early reports on first previews here or AlanScott's deep dives into theatrical trivia on ATC. Luckily, I don't have to choose one board or the other, and don't feel the need to denigrate one site to elevate the other. To me, they complement each other. To quote a Sondheim lyric from "Into the Woods'': " Is it always 'or'? Is it never 'and'?'' From surveying the posts on both boards, to quote another ''Into the Woods'' lyric: ''I know things now, many valuable things that I hadn't known before ....''
Any board that has a post entitled, ‘Smoke! Smoke! Sign of the Devil!’ - without any elaboration - on the day New York City was engulfed with smoke in June can’t be all bad.
