Do you guys know what a shutout is? If they were not nominated for Best Musical that is not a shutout. Updated On: 5/5/10 at 08:53 AM

...A shut out implies no nominations, they got 3. I'm a massive fan of the show and insanely disappointed about the Orchestrations snub, but it's not a shut out.
Really, as much as I wanted to see some acting nominations, the lack of Orchestrations really bothers me.

It really should have gotten nods for orchestrations and directing.
I agree, the only thing I'm disappointed about is orchestrations. No acting nominations were deserved.
Im stunned it didnt get orchestrations

Really upset here about the snubs for JGallagher Jr., Tony Vincent, Tom Kitt and MMayer...WTF !!!!
In my opinion both Tony Vincent and Stark Sands gave brilliant performances and should have been nominated.
Like I've said in another thread, Idiot isn't "Kiss Me Kate", or a great well made musical.
I'll say it before and I'll say it again.
AMERICAN IDIOT WILL NEVER WIN BEST MUSICAL
..... END.OF.STORY.
It has terrible direction, acting, music, characters, and its TOO LOUD. I guess the Tony Voters agree with me.

I agree about Tony Vincent and possibly Stark Sands, but that's about all from AI.

I think American Idiot has potential to win Best Musical. As long as Million Dollar Quartet doesn't win i'll be happy.
In all honesty, I had more fun at MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET than I did at any of the other shows nominated. Out of all of them, I'd go back to see QUARTET again.
I enjoyed Quartet too and I was pleased to see it nominated, I just enjoyed Idiot far more.
It was shutout because it doesn't have many redeeming qualities.
Including it's two-dimensional characters.
Although I'm surprised how few nominations it got, the Drama Desk, the New York Drama Critics Circle and Outer Critics Circle also were less supportive of American Idiot than I would have thought. For whatever reason, it hasn't struck a chord with any of those organizations. Maybe because those groups aren't comprised of the target audience, who knows.
I think Memphis is now the frontrunner for Best Musical, which is a sentence I never thought I would write.

It wasn't shut out.
I didn't really like it, but I do think it should have been nominated at LEAST for its orchestrations, which I think are fantastic. I'm surprised not to see any acting nominations. I thought Gallagher would have gotten one, if not Vincent. I think the trouble with those performances is that it's hard to convey depth in characters that are about apathy, but I know people have been very moved by this show, so that varies and I digress. Did not think Mayer deserved one at ALL, though I'm a little surprised by that, too, just because of all of the love for him in general.

It was a shutout because it only got three nominations, Mr. Matt, DUH.
I'd like to give a shout out to all the shutouts and shut ins.
Oh come on
Critics like it and the awards people like it, it could not get best score, it does not deserve costume, it deserved at least one actor nod (yes people do act in it, a lot, just because they dont talk does not mean they aint acting) but it did get robbed for orchestrations.
Namo - I'm so stupid! What is the minimum number of nominations a show can have to qualify as a shutout? I just can't remember. Four? Five? Illiminate? Verde?
The lack of nominations really opens the field to Fela or Memphis winning. Probably Fela. I am happy about it.
