Actually, I'm half wrong. It premiered in England, but not in London (it was; however, produced by the RSC).
The show was produced by Friedrich Kurz and the Royal Shakespeare Company and had its first four-week run beginning on February 13, 1988 in Stratford-upon-Avon, where it received mixed reviews.

They didn't SPEND the 45 million, it's just that major producers have pulled out, despite what they say to MTV. The post on ATC was fact. Agents/managers have been informed that contracts for Spiderman will not be forthcoming and that their actors should look for other projects.
okay - now say what you will about spiderman the musical - i just feel terribly for all those actors, especially the younger people who thought they'd secured a broadway show, only to see it fall through the cracks. they're probably crushed right now. so sure, spiderman might have been a bad idea from the start... but what a crappy blow all those actors just got.
I think I remember watching the Broadway PBS Special say that Wicked was $14 million, and it would have to play to 90% (**i don't remember the actual percentage) houses for 2 years. $45 million is only 3 times more than $14 million.
And did I hear somewhere that with the renovations, the hilton would have over 1900 seats.
So, you are saying you DO understand that Spider-Man would have to sell out every night for five years to come close to getting that money back? (aka - Not realistic or smart)
Maybe they can come up with a comic where the musical opens and sells out every night for 30 years. That's more like it.

Does U2 think they are the first people to write a rock musical?
I'm a professional. Whenever something goes wrong on stage, I know how to handle it so no one ever remembers. I flash my %#$&.
"Jayne just sat there while Gina flailed around the stage like an idiot."
Of course U2 think they are the first - they touch on opera, they touch on rock'n'roll, there are some real character-driven songs and they have a girl villain. No one has even done that before.
Fail.
