She just seemed to be "acting" throughout for the most part. At least that was my take. I could see her thinking every so often - using technique rather than being in the character, if that makes sense. She never seemed comfortable enough to just let go and "be" Rose, with the exception of her scenes with Danny Burstein.JMO."
How interesting that so many people have such different takes on this. I have seen the production many times and each time find her acting to be so natural, emotional, and real. And so different every performance! Her acting is some of the best I have ever seen in live theater. Maybe you saw her on an off day, or we all just view things differently.
I want to add my voice to the chorus of those who love Audra in this role. I think she is completely devastating, but also sexy, vivacious, and yes, manic at times. But I've never seen her go into full-blown hysterics, nor have I felt she was "acting" at all. Her voice is thrilling on this score to me. But I think the thing I am most impressed by is how truly maternal her Rose is - in my opinion, this is the most maternal I have ever seen Rose played. Which is all the more disturbing when she offers Louise up to strip.
And, for what it's worth, Montego Glover's Witch in Into the Woods destroyed me, so I'm very excited to catch her Rose as well. In no world was Heather Headley ever doing this. And any assumption that Audra "stopped" her from doing it is weird.
Audra is so brilliant in the part, just the small choices she's made with the role. Inimitable. And of course there's no truth to those silly rumors, just sad people trying to start drama between two women. And Montego is so stunning as a performer, I've been a fan of hers since Memphis and I can't wait to see her take on Rose in July.

Is the asterisk in the room with us right now?
Update: Damn, just watched DAME's message get deleted in real time. Again, very very weird times we're living in when free speech doesn't exist on a Broadway chat forum. I'm sorry, DAME, that this is happening.

Now that Audra is getting her undeserved Tony giftted to her by Patti, we wont have to watch Sutton have one of her emotional break downs next week. Audra's Tony will always have a asterix next to it..and Sutton will have to deal with it forever and ever. Copy and paster dears. And if you feel your comments are being unneceraily deleted by Sutton.. send a private message to Rob Diamond. He is the owner and head honcho. "
Remember the days when you’d be straight up attacked on this board and just have to fend for yourself?
Now we’ve got people deleting posts just because they don’t like them. Sad is right.
If your posts are being unfairly deleted.. please private message Robert Diamond. He is the owner and a very nice guy. You can also message him thru the socials. I have his Gmail. But I don't think he would want me to share that. Ive been cutting and pasting for him.
PS.. He just told me she is not a mod and I believe him.

Oh come on. You know if she wins, the win will forever be associated with Patti’s interview debacle. Let’s not kid ourselves.
Maybe to the people who don't want her to win. But you don't think for me. If she wins, I think she will have deserved it. Same with Nicole or Jasmine. I think all three are deeply deserving. There may be an asterisk for you. And that's fine. But let's not adopt sheep mentality just because you and 6 thumbs think there will be an asterisk next to the 7th Tony of the most awarded actor in Tonys history. Okkkkayyy.

But a fair percentage of people would not know about the debacle and many of those who do would not care. It's not like Audra is completely unworthy if she pulls it off.
I'm just stating my opinion on a forum for stating opinions my love 😭 same as you!

I just hate the BS that has surrounded the Best Actress race this season. The Nicole Instagram, the Patti stuff, etc. ANY of these nominees could win and be deserving.
Dame, I saw your post and thought it was absolutely hilarious one of the funniest things I've read here in a while. I would not be surprised if the target of it actually would agree with you.

No one said that she’s unworthy…
So what does an asterisk mean if not unworthy? Genuinely asking, not being snarky.

It means exactly what abcd12 said above. It’ll forever be linked to Patti’s interview and subsequent apology.

I haven’t even seen Boop! yet and I want Jasmine to win just to end this annoying discourse.

It would make this production of Sunset even more meta; just like when Judy Holliday beat Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis the year the Sunset film competed at the Oscars. The exciting newcomer beating the Big Divas.

When Aaron Tveit's Tony was mentioned in another thread, some here certainly associated the asterisk with unworthy or unlikely to have won except for special conditions.
That asterisk just means her Tony win will forever be linked to Patti’s interview and subsequent apology. And that obnoxious open letter.
Listen; all this Audra/Nicole thing. Personally if I were a voter Jennifer would have my support. I would have even said she could pull a upset. Except she needs to show up to work more for that to happen. She is even out again tonight.

I was blown away by Audra's performance. I don't understand the naysayers at all. I get it if you don't think she was "right" for the role, but, to say she wasn't amazing? That's just crazy to me. I read a post elsewhere where someone literally said she was "awful". I actually laughed out loud. I mean, "awful"? C'mon. And no ONE is going to remember the Patti LuPone absurdity in a year..except for those of us who read Broadway boards. Patti has always been a b*tch and will always be one and has nothing to do with how good or "not good" Audra was in Gypsy.
I think Audra was really good acting-wise. It's the vocals I found weird. The other night I heard Lea sing "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and the approach was so much more natural than Audra's operatic soprano voice.

She wasn’t amazing. Many of us feel that way. You don’t. Move on.

Many people? It's a handful of people on a small internet message board.
