I remember really liking this play when it debuted way back in 2014 at Here Arts Center. I wonder who will play the father- it was Reed Birney then, and it was his one-two punch of that and Casa Valentina that helped garner a wider appreciation for his work.

I know I saw this in its original run, but I can’t remember a single thing about it other than that it was surprisingly raunchy and that Reed Birney was on an absolute tear Off-Broadway at that time. I didn’t even remember William Jackson Harper was in it, or that it was directed by Anne Kauffman.

It's pretty crazy how this is selling just in pre-sale especially at these prices. While tickets do start at $59 there don't seem to have been any of those left an hour into pre-sale. For reference, here are the prices.

Previews: Tier 1 - $139 Tier 2 - $109 Tier 3 - $89 Tier 4 - $69 Tier 5 - $59 Wheelchair - $59

Post-Opening: Tier 1 - $189 Tier 2 - $169 Tier 3 - $139 Tier 4 - $109 Tier 5 - $79

I thought this was mostly wonderful. I don’t know if it’s five-star-rave-worthy, but it was definitely strong. The performances are all very impressive. Peter Friedman, specifically, was absolutely heartbreaking. The audience last night was awful though - phones going off, phones dropping, people getting up mid-scene and disrupting entire rows, etc.

I don’t think it would work in a bigger space, frankly. A huge part of what makes the production special is its intimacy. Quibbles about the writing aside, it’s absolutely worth seeing if you can.

this would be great for Second Stage to remount at the Hayes or if it went to the Booth

The audience when I went was surprisingly young, attractive, and seemingly not experienced theatre goers. I think the A24-ification of their aesthetics and West Village location are making Cherry Lane kind of hip with a TikTok crowd.

(not a huge deal though, my crowd was mostly fine and I loved the play)

this is an excellent production, with a truly top notch cast, but the play really didnt do anything for me until the very end (which reminded me of Significant Other, oddly...just me?).

Barron is VERY talented and the family play element is phenomenal--- i cant remember the last time I saw a family scene that felt as natural, everyday banter, as the one Barron cooks up here. I actually think the last half is quite strong, but its a slog to get there (could just be me) as we meet Mae and her dad. Its half dull and half truly bizarre, which is an odd combo.

But not every play is for every person, and I am still glad I caught this because Shawkat is solid, and Peter Friedman is especially phenomenal here--i mean truly hard to imagine him topping his turn in JOB but here we are. What a treasure.

My first time at the Cherry Lane Theater, which is lovely and scene-y, and full of young beautiful people who do not seem like typical theatergoers (which is GREAT), though I was seated just behind Shaina Taub so its not a totally newbie crowd...
