A fitting salute to one of the greatest Dames ever to grace the Broadway stage :)
I don't know if we should expect to see her there, based on what some of us have heard and being that she's 96 and a half, but that doesn't make the honor any less special!
Hopefully she'll get a nice musical tribute onstage.

I’m crying.
Sounds about right! Frankly I'm surprised she doesn't have one already! She got her honorary Oscar almost a decade ago.

I wouldn’t expect to see her there but I’d LOVE to be proven wrong.

Whether she's there or not, I'm sure CBS will decide showing a performance of cruise ship Hairspray is more important than televising any speech from her.
(But bitterness aside, yes, so well deserved!!!)
So happy about this.

Yay Angela! I hope she'll be in good enough health to attend.

I haven't heard anything recently about Dame Angela's health. Could you please fill me in on what you've heard?
I'm also thrilled that she's getting this tribute. Long overdue!

In what way is it "long overdue"? She has 5 Tonys already. It's not like she's been egregiously overlooked the last 50-60 years.

I guess it depends on how you interpret the purpose of a Lifetime Achievement award. They can definitely be useful for recognizing artists with impressive careers, but who haven't yet been recognized in competitive categories. And it seems like that's sometimes a factor, but not necessarily the main criteria for deciding who gets the award; seems like they mainly focus on the career itself, regardless of whether they have won before.
So in that sense, it's just that she's overdue for a Lifetime Achievement award.
Also, I have to laugh at this bonkers statement from the League/Wing, which feels like it was written by someone who only knows AL's work from a Wikipedia entry. In what way was MAME groundbreaking? Don't get me wrong, it's a WONDERFUL show/performance, but a white lady in a musical was hardly groundbreaking in 1966...and DEUCE in the same sentence as SWEENEY? And "most recently" being a credit that isn't actually her most recent? And not mentioning that she was Honorary Chair of the Wing for a term and also a 5x Host of the Tonys?
"Angela Lansbury's contributions to the stage are insurmountable," said Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League and Heather Hitchens, President and CEO of the American Theatre Wing. "From her groundbreaking role in Mame to her iconic performances in Deuce and Sweeney Todd, and most recently, in the revival of A Little Night Music, Ms. Lansbury has given us a lifetime of unforgettable performances, and it is a great honor to present her with the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award."
@Ermengarde they clearly didn't EVEN look at Wikipedia.

An "iconic" performance in DEUCE ????
With all due respect to Angela, that play was almost as intolerable as THE ANARCHIST. There was nothing "iconic" to be found in either play.

This does not give me hope for whatever introduction they write for her. Next thing you know we'll get a whole segment on "A Nice Family Business"

Hey, if Anthony Hopkins can show up to the Oscars...

To my knowledge this is more complicated than the still-working Hopkins showing up to the Oscars. She's 96, physically and mentally isn't what she used to be, and isn't NYC-local these days. Others know far more than I do –– and I think we are all trying to be respectful and delicate here –– but we should really be managing expectations.
As Jordan said, I would love to be proven wrong!

How the hell do you know anything about her health? Some of the posts in this thread truly disgust me. Ageism at its absolute worst

The legendary Mr Roxy is the same age as Ms Lansbury and he fell apart years ago

Feel very fortunate to have seen her in Night Music three times and Blythe Spirit. What a life and what a career she’s had. Well deserved honor.
Oh, she will be there for sure. And after she receives the award, she will make the big announcement we've been waiting for - she will be taking over the role of 'Fanny Brice' in the revival of 'Funny Girl' starting that week.
Seriously, how could this not have happened years ago?
How often can one say someone is long overdue for a lifetime achievement award?
