I heard this rumor last week. Glad it turned out to be true.
Is the current company moving with the show to New World Stages?

Wow, has a show ever closed on Broadway and then transferred back to Off-Broadway? This is pretty great.

The producers clearly feel there is still an audience for the show, and that there is an opportunity for further profit in a smaller house?

Yes, it has happened before. In 1980, Billy Bishop Goes to War closed on Broadway at the Morosco and moved to the Lucille Lortel. In 1984, the original 'night Mother closed at the Golden and moved to the Westside Arts Theatre.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
