lol. I love jackie hoffman. She does interviews about how shows that have american idol people in them, or jukebox musicals are not real original theater.
Yet the only musicals she has done are "hairspray", "xanadu" and "Addams Family". Three Movie Musicals. Hypocrisy is a fun thing to spread around.

Musicals themselves originated from other sources and books. Everything is an influence of something else. The Black Crook (known as one of the first American Musicals) in the late 1800's was based on Faust. and so on and so on and so on. Hairspray, Xanadu and Addams Family were all originally written for the stage.. based on movies,... but newly written for the stage. So maybe that's what she meant. If it weren't for films. Broadway would be dead. If it weren't for Broadway, films would have been dead in the 20's, 30's and 40's. Every film back then was a musical. And now, some musicals seem to have the film influence/adaptation. No big whoop.
back to topic.

The producers would just TELL them to stay? You do know the actors have free will, right? They aren't endentured servants.
Additionally, they don't usually plan closings months in advance (unless it's a limited run).
Heck, at the end of Drowsy Chaperone's run, Cindy Williams was brought in. She started mid-December, and show was closed at the end of the month. I think she played the role for less then 3 weeks. Bob Saget has recently taken over the role of the Man in the Chair and only played the part for about 2 months.
The producers keep casting and replacing until the show closes.

everything these days originated from something else. This is a basic elementary fact. My point is that when one person decries one form of art to BOOST their own while the form of art they participate in is on the same level of originality is both hypocritical and ignorant. ANd its annoying to me.
tired of the high horse she rides around the media outlets. So i guess Jersey boys is a lower art form than addams family in ms. Hoffman's mind.

Given that CATCH ME IF YOU CAN had seemingly equal/better numbers than PRISCILLA, and they are the first to cave, I'm figuring PRISCILLA must be doing something right....
Maybe with the field thinned a little bit, PRISCILLA may pick up some more patrons to help it through the rest of the year. Although, I'm not 100% sure it will be there come the January clean-out...

Posted: 4/27/12 at 11:55amIt's fun to read this now knowing that Wonderland closed fast and so many people were hating on Priscilla and it's still running, while Catch Me is gone.

quizking101- Saw "Catch Me If You Can" and was surprised it did not last even a year. Thought it was a fun show and had some pretty good performances from Aaron Tveit and Norbert Leo Butz.

Massofmen - IMO - "Memphis" should stay open just for the performance of Montego Glover. Did not see it with Adam Pascal but imagine he is pretty good also.

Posted: 4/27/12 at 3:14pmI definitely see Magic/Bird closing. Not trying to be a douche. I saw it and didn't think it was too great. It was also pretty empty.

madlibrarian -- you do realize that shows DO close, right? And that people talking about which might be next, doesn't cause it to happen, right? In fact, no one is WILLING a show to close -- but it is inevitable.
If you don't care to talk about that reality, why did you bother to open and then read the thread?

What makes you think I didn't enjoy the thread? I said it was highly entertaining! My question NOW is: Where is the CURRENT, UP-TO-DATE thread on TODAY's shows? I await an answer!
Better yet: I'll contribute to one! I bet PORGY AND BESS doesn't make it to Labor Day!

Well then, I apologize. I though I was 'hearing' a sarcastic tone, chastising the thread.
Nevermind.

We're going to see a number of closings LONG before Labor Day....Leap of Faith (and likely, Magic/Bird) are just waiting to find out if there are any noms to keep them going.
Leap is on TDF for more than three weeks straight....that can't be good. (Most of the other b'way shows listed are up from anywhere from a day or two to a full week.)
