Re: Barbara Barrie Has Passed Away At 95

An extraordinary career that spanned eight decades. I'm glad I got to see her in two amazing performances relatively late: I Remember Mama and Significant Other.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

A legendary career that spanned television, film and the stage. She won the 1964 Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her portrayal of a young divorced mother who falls in love with an African American man in the controversial film, "One Potato, Two Potato".

She gave a Tony Award Nominated Best Featured Actress in a Musical performance as "Sarah" in the Stephen Sondheim musical, "Company".

She received an Oscar nomination for the 1979 coming of age film, "Breaking Away" and received an Emmy Award nomination when she reprised the role in the television series adaptation.

She became a household name for her role as Elizabeth "Liz" Miller, wife of Hal Linden's character on "Barney Miller".

She lives on in her many great performances. May she rest in peace.

Re: Barbara Barrie Has Passed Away At 95

I first became aware of Barbara Barrie when I was...7 years old, maybe? I caught the live capture of a production of Barefoot in the Park on HBO starring Bess Armstrong and Richard Thomas. I was obsessed with Barrie's performance because I was a budding homosexual who couldn't get enough of her perfect timing.

My first acting gig out of college was in a Theaterworks tour of the Velveteen Rabbit in which I was the titular character. Her husband, Jay Harnick, ran Theaterworks and had us over to their apartment for a lunch ahead of our tour. I got the chance to tell her how much I adored her in Barefoot and how it made me a lifelong fan. A lovely woman and a sensational actress. What a life.

I have enjoyed her screen work all the way back to "Barney Miller". I was lucky enough to finally see her live onstage in "Significant Other" at the Laura Pels.

May she Rest In Peace.

I thought her performance in Significant Other was beautiful and was surprised that she and Gideon Glick didn’t get Tony noms.

Medically assisted suicide at 95 is kind of extraordinary. What strength.

The final moments of that show shook me to my core.
