I think Peters would be a sensational Desiree in ALNM.
Who is with me?
Too hot
I'm definitely with you even though I'd much prefer her in a show where she'll get to sing most of the songs. Something more like HELLO, DOLLY...or an original piece.
I've been saying it for years.

Ooooh that'd be cool... Well, pretty much Bernadette in anything is cool with me.

I can't agree on that one. Peters would have been a terrific Anne in the day (though I'm not sure she could have sung it), but she is not a Desiree.
And yes, Desiree was expressly written for an actress who sings a little. And I think the ones who have done it best (Glynis Johns, Jean Simmons, Juliet Stevenson, Dame Judi) have been in that category.
I'd rather see her as Dolly than Desiree.
She's not "light" enough for the "light comedy" in Night Music.

Not for her.
Much more fun as Dolly, per Best12bars.

I'd skip that revival, then.

the only desiree i could ever see in a revival is Helen Mirren, i'd die! She's old, still looks amazing, doesnt really sing much, and i think she would really be good for the part.
Oh I think Helen Mirren is too cold and icy for Desiree. I think Bernadette Peters would probably pull off A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC beautifully - and though I agree that it would be more fun to see her in something new - or a role that would show off her voice more - I definitely think she has the "light" comedy skills necessary.
As a matter of exercise, it would also have been fun to see Peters as Mrs. Lovett.
I think Peters is looking for an original musical.
Brooke Shields as Desiree.

Peters has done one too many revivals, I think for her an original is better.
Oh, MB, I'd pay big money to see Peters as Mrs.Lovett, I can't imagine what a machiavellic riot she'd be in the role.

Peters would probably be a riot as Mrs. Lovett, you are so right!
In 20 years, Kate Winslet will make a sublime Desiree.
I actually think Winslet would make a better Lovett!
A role she should've played in the film version...not to start beating a dead horse or anything
I agree that Dolly is a broader role and more for her style. She's not a Desiree. She could, maybe, do the Countess, but not Desiree.
