Here, in Great Britain, Bette's Gypsy was released in cinemas. My boyfriend and I went along on the same evening as the soccer World Cup Final (which was televised) - we were the only two men in a packed cinema.
Laurent's has said she was playing Norma Desmond, herself, and very little Rose in the film.
While Russell's singing is a whole other debate, her acting was a lot more genuine.

Sorry, I don't mention names on a public message board. Like I said, believe me or don't. Doesn't matter to me. But my loyalty is to my friends, not to someone on the internet whom I've never met, and certainly not to a message board full of Lord only knows who.
Am I honestly the first person to give information around here without citing a source by name?
No but you're a particularly nasty little liar who likes to make up things to sound important.

Oh for chrissake. Seriously? I guess we can only say beautiful things about Miss Midler around here, or we're nasty liars.
Sorry to burst all your bubbles. We'll pretend it never happened and she was an angel on the set. The best Rose ever, too!
So, are you saying you've never met anyone on the board, elphiesmagic?
No, you really do come off as pissy in all your posts.

Not that I know of, Miss Pennywise. The operative words being "that I know of". That's what makes me nervous about naming names in the first place, but now I've learned another lesson, which is not to say anything at all of what I might know. People don't want to know what they don't want to know.
And Ghost of Kringas, I'm sorry if I do. I'm a very sarcastic person, and the anonymity of the internet (which I like to keep anonymous, thanks!) makes it tempting to be even bitchy at times. I do apologize if I've offended anyone.

So, since you don't know any of us, you run to this board to post nasty comments about a person you probably don't even know.
Why post any of it?
Were you there? Or is this just second rate rumor?
Damn, and I told myself I wasn't going to post.

You people are relentless, yet selective. There is a thread now stating that someone heard "from a reliable source", nothing more, that Nikki Snelson is leaving ACL tour, and no one is asking what THEIR source is.
I can't believe I'm defending this, but I did not RUN TO the board to post this, it's not like it just happened yesterday and I started a thread. I was responding to a thread about the subject. And if you read my post you will see that I was not there. But people I'm close to were. That's all. And for the third time, it's your choice to believe what you read on the internet or not. Don't believe it if you don't want to. No skin off my nose.
The director Emile Ardolino (DIRTY DANCING) was very ill during filming and without a strong hand, Bette did what she would."
As if it actually mattered. Dirty Dancing is one of the worst-directed films, ever made.
The television version of Gypsy is utterly mediocre at best, and at times, downright awful. Only Cynthia Gibb is above criticism, imo.
I liked it.

It was my first introduction to Gypsy, and even after seeing the revival in New York, I still don't think it was awful.
as to "original intent" of the thread, some have tried to address it, and others have used the tangential issues as springboards to other discussion. Much like real life, no?
"naming sources"...that is an old debate, won't be solved here, especially by name-calling.
i'd just like to suggest that if any performer showed as much closed-mindedness in acting choices as some of you have shown in your analytical ones, they'd never work again.

Bette's GYPSY was a huge ratings win, however, and green-lit the TV musicals that followed -- and indicated that musicals could still be a viable art form.
And as much as I agree that Bette was far from a perfect Rose, she still got an Emmy nod out of it.

I think it was such a missed opportunity. I adore her and would die to see her Rose under a strong director.
