There was a new press release posted on ATC this morning saying to send in headshots and resumes for the role of Eugene...have they not found anyone yet? I know they had an open call in January.

I haven't seen or heard anything that would indicate they have casted this role. I don't think it will be easy to top Broderick's performance as Eugene.
I actually believe that it might be a bit dated and not well received. If you remember, that was a big criticism of The Odd Couple revival a few years ago. BBM is set in a much older time period which is a key part of the story itself. I don't believe they could update it and keep the original story.
Personally, I love the play but I'm not sure how it would do. Revivals seem to be taking it on the chin lately.

So you don't need to audition? You just need to send in a headshot and resume? And they'll call you if they want to see you?
I'm confused.

I'm not sure if it will seem as 'dated' since it is just as much ABOUT a different time along with telling the story -- it doesnt' NEED to be updated.
The Odd Couple is more about the situation....buddies and divorce and I don't think it's exclusive to the original time period.

BBM is not dated AT ALL.
This kind of makes me mad, though. I went to the open call, and they chose the worst possible audition piece- the opening monologue where he's playing baseball. All that really shows is that Eugene loves baseball and has an active imagination. Hopefully, they'll use a monologue that actually shows personality next time.

If Brighton Beach Memoirs is "dated", then I guess Phantom of the Opera is REALLY dated - it takes place a hundred years ago! Maybe they should update it!
South Pacific, West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, Pal Joey - all those shows are DATED! Let's update them to make them more relevant for modern audiences!!!

Posted: 3/10/09 at 11:37amIt isn't at all dated because it's technically a period piece. It's as much about the time period as it is about the family's situation.

You have to be able to create a character who is interesting even in less than high content moments. It is like the tough question on the exam - to separate the "men" from the "boys" so to speak.

Posted: 3/10/09 at 12:21pmThe opening scene of with Eugene IS Eugene. It's the essence of his character. He's a dreamer. It establishes who he is.

Posted: 3/10/09 at 6:38pmStill I agree with bwaylvsong, there were much better monologues they could have chosen.
#15re: Brighton Beach Revival Casting
Posted: 3/10/09 at 6:41pmThey wanted to challenge the people who auditioned. The other monologues are easier to act, but the opening monologue is more character driven. You have to try harder.

If you read my post you would see that I was making the comparison between the criticism that the Odd Couple received and the possibility that the same could be said about BBM. I love both plays so my concern is that the public would be hard on it because of the time period it takes place in. The story is wonderful and I just wouldn't like to see it trashed because the younger audience wouldn't get some of the jokes because of period it takes place in.
Phanthom?? Since when is that a comedy? Great comparison.

Posted: 3/13/09 at 1:16amI just sent mine through e-mail and haven't received any error notices in the hour since I sent it (as opposed to the first time where I received one immediately after). My fingers are crossed for a prescreening at least. Whatever that is.

Posted: 3/13/09 at 7:23amA pre-screening is an audition strictly with the casting agency representing the show, who will determine if you are "worthy" to be seen again in front of the creative team.
