Posted: 1/23/12 at 4:31pmWelcome to winter. Overall I don't think the grosses are that bad for this time of year.

Posted: 1/23/12 at 4:52pmCan someone explain what happened with WAR HORSE? Did they not do a full 8 shows the week prior? I have a hard time believing they kept attendance steady, but made and extra $300k.

Posted: 1/23/12 at 4:54pmThey did five shows last week to give extra rehearsal time to the new cast.

Posted: 1/23/12 at 6:36pmIt's a real, real shame SISTER ACT isn't connecting with audiences. I'm not sure why. It's such an enjoyable show. It's really too bad.

Mamma Mia! doing okay considering its age, I think the rumour of it moving to the Ambassador to make way for Matilda might be true. The fact it's run so long is an achievement considering ABBA are nowhere near as popular in the US as they are in Europe.
As for Sister Act, I think it'll be gone by summer if grosses don't pick up.

Posted: 1/23/12 at 7:56pmSister Act is a mediocre show that got mediocre reviews. It is lucky it lasted as long as it has. It's a theme park show on Broadway and people are aren't willing to pay that much to see it. It's had a decent run and will probably do well on tour.

It's a COMPLETELY different role now. The role of Mother Superior is not the campy mess that it was in the atrocious London book. Whoopi could NEVER sing "Haven't Got a Prayer" - not even in a lower key. The song/scene would have to be cut. Besides, Whoopi has gone on record saying that she has no interest in playing the role on Broadway because she "can't sing it."

Sister Act is almost approaching one year on Broadway which is not bad by most measures. It's one of only three new musicals from 2011 that's still playing and I suspect Priscilla's days are numbered too. I doubt it's come near recouping and it's probably purging money the past few weeks but to write off as a complete failure is unfair when it's compared to a lot of other shows.
I don't see how the show survives more than a month or two and I say that as a Sister Act fan. I can't think of any star that would come in at this point to bring up the grosses (not to mention that Patina's under contract for another two months).

I loved Sister Act. I'd see it again in a heartbeat. I think the score was one of the best of last season. The design is great, and the book is quick and funny.
I'm really surprised it isn't connecting. Everyone I know that I've sent to see it has walked out loving it and singing its praises. It really needed a Tony win - for Best Actress or something to keep it going.
Maybe they can get a "Broadway name" to play Mother Superior. Someone along the lines of the "aging divas." Like Donna Murphy, etc.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 2:14pmVictoria Clark and Carolee Carmello are not Broadway names?????? Donna Murphy doesn't sell any more tickets than they do.

They were in talks, but she couldn't get her new teeth in time for the show and her walker needed major repairs.

My guess is that Sister Act will last (if not longer) through beginning of June, so that Mr Alan Menken will get to hold the title of a hat trick on Broadway. He will have Sister Act, Newsies AND Leap of Faith.
Last person to do so was Frank Wildhorn in '99 (At least American if I'm not mistaken) with Jekyll & HYDE, Civil War and Pimpernel.

I'm not sure I see the honor in having three shows simultaneously losing their capitalization.

Posted: 1/24/12 at 10:43pmHaving 3 multi-million dollar shows running at the same time is a pretty big feat, regardless of the outcome. Not many composers/writers have two shows running at the same time! (Especially considering the amount of money and space available)

It won't seem that significant considering Andrew Lloyd Webber will also have 3 shows open in Phantom, Evita, and Jesus Christ Superstar.
