If you really are concerned about lack of space for these wonderful new shows that are coming up, please don't worry much.
There is going to be a lot of space coming up soon. Chicago currently employs some of the best artists on Broadway. If you think that the quality of the show is slipping, you can leave it to audiences to determine that. As far as I can tell, they still do pretty decent business.
"Chicago is going to the Booth, Mamma Mia to the Ambassador and then Matilda from the West End is supposedly going into the Winter Garden."
No f*cking way...It seems completely nonsensical for the Shuberts to move CHICAGO into one of their most viable play houses for this old war horse.
Plus, isn't MATILDA not coming until 2013? (which could free up the Imperial since I doubt NICE WORK will last.)
You people act like after that show closed another wouldn't open. Different people would find employment.

That's not the point. You are wishing a business to close under the reasoning that another would open in its place anyhow.
I won't argue much more. You can continue with the mean spirited wishes - they don't translate into reality. The show will close when it has to, not when you don't want to.
I really don't care your opinion of me. Shows open and shows close it's Broadway.
Does anyone know what the weekly running cost of CHICAGO is?
I remember seeing an old thread a while back (can't find the link) that says depends on who is headlining, it varies from $300,000 to $400,000 per week.

I wonder when Sister Act and Godspell are going to announce their closings.
Is Matilda really that large a show to fill the Winter Garden? I haven't seen it, as I don't live across the Atlantic Ocean, but from the pictures/clips I've seen it seems like a relatively small show, something that wouldn't fit in the massive Winter Garden.
And I echo those who hope the Booth isn't tied up by Chicago for years. Not that I want Chicago to close, but as has been said, the Booth is a really great theatre for smaller shows and it would be a shame to see it rendered unavailable for such a long time.
It's a business. It's not about what we want. CHICAGO will likely produce some nice figures in the Booth. Quite a smart decision, if true.

The Booth Theater isn't the only small theater that the shubert organization owns, for starts it has 3 virtually next door, with the Lyceum, Music Box, Barrymore and Belasco a block away.
The Lyceum, Music Box, Barrymore and Belasco have 922, 989, 1035 and 1029 seats respectively. If Chicago wants to move from the 1080 seat Ambassador due to declining sales, it doesn't make much sense to move to a theater with only 50-150 fewer seats. The Booth is the only (available) theater with significantly fewer seats (just 761) and also the stage space to fit Chicago.
Chicago will not close until every star in the universe stars in it.
It should move to New World Stages
Chicago is not moving anywhere....just someone's idea of humor. from RC in Austin, Texas
That plan sounds pretty far-fetched to me, especially given the fact that Other Desert Cities seems to be settling in for a lengthy run, and will have its status bolstered by the Tonys it's likely to win in June. Those roles also offer a myriad of potential replacement casting opportunities.
I actually think Mamma Mia may be closing up shop soon- probably by the end of the summer.

Matilda would work perfectly in the imperial, I think. And maybe is the marquis is open, they could house a hit!

The theatre Matilda is in London is around 1200 seats, something like the Richard Rodgers or the Broadhurst would suit it, The Winter Garden as well as The Imperial seem a tad big for it.
As for Mamma Mia! a closure wouldn't surprise me, the show's had a fantastic run on Broadway but it would free up The Winter Garden for new shows.

Does anyone else find this alarming?: Broadway is down $1.3 million last week compared to the same week in 2010.
I find the state of Broadway in general, to be "alarming."
Alarming? No. It's one week -- Was there the same number of shows open last year? What about the caliber of the shows open last week.
One week doesn't mean squat. Ever.

@mjroberts972 im telling you Godspell is not going anywhere, out of the 4 musicals that opened this fall look at which is the only one with a cast recording out.....
Say what??? I sincerely doubt a cast album will have a huge effect on GODSPELL'S staying power.
