West Village: You are wrong. This past week is not considered a good one for Broadway. If you look at the grosses for the same week in 2005 and 2004, you'll see that most shows went down, some drastically.

Spring Awakening will get their ticket prices up..many of the people seeing it last week no doubt bought those $65 tickets when they had a chance. The fact that their grosses have increased week to week (despite playing just 7 shows) and that capacities have been increasing indicates that there is very real interest in this show.

I believe this week was blacked out from their $65 offer, and we've already heard reports of it selling out, so I expect you'll see a huge leap in avg ticket price next week. The fact of the matter is that this show has turned a corner. I'm so proud of them I could cry!

WestVillage doesn't have anything nice to say. They are always saying rude things about Spring Awakening. It seems as if the reason they are on this board is to put down SA.

I think perhaps the reason may be that suddently, SA threads are outnumbering the Wicked threads. It's a bit nauseating. It seems as if every 3rd thread is about SA. I for one was not impressed by the show at all, and am very surprised the critics gushed so much, but never would wish ill on a Broadway show or it's cast. Just remember, that whenever a frenzy about a show begins on this board, there will be those who are against it, and they have just as much right to dislike it as you have to like it.

As for the grosses, i'm most surprised by the dip over at Drowsy Chaperone.

I seem to remember Bway doing a lot better this weeks last year year.
Wow thats' a shame about Company. The performance I went to was well attended, but I don't know if that show will be able to build an audience.
As for The Producers, I'm not that surprised about Danza having nil effect. He isn't that great in the role, and his casting falls under the "too little too late" category.
Good to see Spring Awakening doing better. Even though I didn't love the show, I almost always root for original works, which just seem to get rarer and rarer.

I respect everyone's opinion here. It just bothers me that people are saying how they didn't like Spring Awakening all the time in threads where it is unnecessary. I'm just saying this in general.

Princeton, of course I respect your opinion, but you also have to repect the fact that based on the buzz I've been hearing, your opinion is the minority opinion. What is wrong with people being passionate about a show and wanting to post threads about it? I'm not sure I understand why that's so nauseating. Isn't this a theatre fans' board? Why not just ignore them or start another thread for YOUR favorite show?

Go Grey Gardens! I really want that to last. I think that it might be able to last Jan/Feb simply because I believe that there are more NYers there on average than at many other shows. It appeared, when I was there Christmas Eve, that there were more NYers than tourists. Their strategy that Smaxie outlined seems to be working; they grossed more than SA. SA has a HUGE teen fan base. Before chorus at my school we cant get a group of girls to stop singing Totally F*****. All these kids are now out of school and rushing all the time. SA still has a lot of work to do to weather the winter months.

Iheartfame, I'm not being mean or defensive--I also enjoyed Grey Gardens--but they did not gross more than Spring Awakening. GG had 8 performances while SA had 7. GG's avg per performance was $47,980.75. SA's avg was $53,870.

okay. However, doesn't equity have regulations about having to have 8 shows a week? I'm no expert on equity policy, but SA still didn't pull its weight because ultimately they have the same nut. I loved SA when I saw it Off-Bway, and I'm seeing it tonight at the O'Neill, but they still have a lot of work to do.

Maybe since The Producers started the ball rolling with premium seating & it has now snowballed they should also raise ticket prices. They are doing so splendidly at the box office

Some shows look like they in really bad shape. It does not bode well for the months to come

It is one the 5 or 6 lowest average ticket prices of all the Broadway shows. Not good for a show that got rave reviews. People obviously are not so willing to spend full price.

It's not that people "obviously are not willing to spend full price." It's just that there ARE discounts available, and people are using them. People aren't going to spend full price if they can just use an available discount.

What GG has going for it above SA is that GG is more directed toward adults, and there's never a shortage of adults who have money. SA needs to market toward ADULTS from now until the Tonys. The teens are smart enough to hear word of mouth and get tickets on their own. They need to sell this show to adults.

A number of shows only had 7 shows last week- not just SA. BTW-Spring has 10 shows scheduled from the day after Christmas through New year's Day. Tues 7PM, 2 on Wed, Thurs 8PM, 2 on Fri, 2 on Sat, Sunday 2PM, and Mon 2PM. That's some week- and I think these have all been sold out so far.

However, doesn't equity have regulations about having to have 8 shows a week?

No. CHITA RIVERA: THE DANCER'S LIFE played 7-show weeks for its entire run and it was still eligible for all Tony categories including Best Musical.

I think the only AEA regulation is that you can't have more than 8 shows. There is no stipulation on the minimum number of shows allowed. Grinch is an exception because their show is so short..someone else said this, but I'm gonna steal it, "Doing 12 shows playing the Grinch is easier than doing 6 shows playing Jean Val Jean."

Wow, Teka, is that right? SA is doing 10 shows in one week?? How did they get away with that?

Yes- SA has 10 shows in 7 days (12/26-1/1)- they added Matinees Wed and Fri, but one less show on Sun- dropped the 8PM New Year's eve, and changed the Mon night to a matinee to take advantage of remaining holiday crowds. Check telecharge and you'll see the schedule. I sure hope they are getting additional compensation! No show on Tues. 1/2, since they are dark that day anyway.

Company and Grey Gardens sold out on Wednesday, hopefully that will give the shows a good boost.

Then again, nearly everything I tried to get tickets to was sold out.

Hey Princeton, I've seen it twice. Once off broadway and once on. When I mentioned "the buzz it's getting", I was talking about the fact that everyone seems to be raving about this show, and my opinion happens to coincide with them. I think it's one of the best things I have seen in a very long time.

I don't think GG will tour without its stars. Unless they do limited engagement of some sort. Spring Awakening will be a hard show to tour because of subject matter. I remember Anthony Rapp saying something along the lines of when Rent toured certain places, letters were sent out saying the show had certain things in it just to warn people. That was Rent imagine Spring Awakening.

hmm..both of these would be a tough sell in middle america. I think a tour will depend on how successful commercially it is on Broadway and if one of them wins the Tony. I think that Grey Gardens has a better chance of touring, if and only if they have a big enough star attached, but I think that Spring Awakening would be a huge hit in Europe and Canada and actually go on to receive more worldwide recognition. Not so sure how much the rest of the world would care about cousins of Jackie Onassis Kennedy. If SA does become a phenomenon, like Rent, then that would prompt a N. American tour.

Where's the love for A Chorus Line??? It did the best in capacity at 100.8%(beat out Jersey Boys) and 6th overall in grosses($900K+ despite playing in a smaller theatre).

I hope Commpany picks up the next couple of weeks, if not it'll be gone by February.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

hah finally!! don't worry ACL2006, I'm constantly monitoring the ACL grosses week by week and this was apparently the best week yet. It's always so hard to try and predict, since there are sometimes no-shows resulting in some empty seats- but what matters is that those seats were paid for and are included in the attendance and gross figures. anything over 850k is very good for the show (not sure what the weekly nut is), and it feels great to finally beat JERSEY BOYS and WICKED for once.

I do hope COMPANY picks up too, at least enough to make it till the Tonys. credit where it's due, that's a wonderful revival.
