Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 2/3/19

Not a good week all around, but that was because of the frigid cold I am assuming.

In addition to the extreme cold weather (I read that even Hamilton had to drop ticket prices to fill seats!) I think that the Super Bowl may have had a substantial effect, particularly on musicals with a large teen audience. It is probably no co-incidence that Mean Girls had one of the biggest drops of the week...

...What am I missing that the Super Bowl would have an effect on anything, specifically with a teen audience??

I can count on one hand the amount of shows that have Sunday evenings. Most bway theaters are dark from Sunday once the matinee gets out, until Tuesday night.

It's still Broadway week too (two for 1 tickets.)

Two years ago, I managed to see Dear Evan Hansen thanks to Broadway week discount and when I bought the ticket, the box office agent specifically warned me that it was Superbowl evening and I was of course ok with that! lol.

Overall I think Broadway was ok despite the extreme cold weather. There wasn't any huge snowfalls last week.

It's really funny how people are trying to come up with specific reasons. Well it's the Super Bowl effect, the Polar Vortex, cancelled flights in the Midwest, people getting ready for Groundhog Day, Maybe it's just January. Happens every year.

Cancelled flights and really cold weather can happen anytime between Late November and mid-March. The difference between December and January being people are willing to overcome travel delays and cold weather cause it's fun to be in New York during the holiday season, late January... not so much. As far as Groundhog Day or the Superbowl, pretty sure neither had any effect on Broadway attendance this past week. My point was, January is always slow as the data OKBroadwayFan provided testifies to. This has been discussed on this boards many, many times. Trying to find a specific explanation as to why THIS WEEK was slow is kind of pointless.

But that pointless exercise occurs 52 weeks out of the year on here. "

Not true. I think there were at least 2 or 3 of these threads in the past 52 weeks that had at least some thoughtful analysis. More than that if you are willing to accept "ouch" as thoughtful analysis.
