Well, Schmigadoon got an obvious post-Tonys bump... and the other new musicals decidedly did not.

I think Titanique is likely in real trouble.

The Fear of 13 made an apt decision to fold early.

I'm worried that Cats struggle to gain steam, even during the pride month.

The Knicks winning the championship and the start of the World Cup really benefiting at the rest of the city's expense.

Happy trails to BECKY SHAW, Colin Donnell, Anna Grace Barlow, and Jeannette Bayardelle.

I forgot about Fear of 13... they never actually formally announced their early closure in a press release, did they? So strange.

Me too...I gotta go back and see Cats again...they do have a performance on THE TONIGHT SHOW coming up so hopefully that helps things

I also already know the grosses for next week are gonna be pretty bad due to the World Cup and the Knicks ticker tape parade. Im guessing pretty every single show will be down in grosses b/c of this

Titanique was sunk by that horrible Tonys performance. Congrats to Book of Mormon!

The parade will be from 10 AM - 12 PM in the Financial District. I don't think it'll have any impact on next week's numbers.

Juneteenth is a Friday this year so it’ll be a long weekend plus Father’s Day on Sunday.

Not formally, but the internet sleuths who had tickets for July got cancellation emails and saw that Telecharge had shaved the last two weeks off. The Playbill article about it was very careful to say that they were “pausing ticket sales” as opposed to an actual closing, probably to avoid liability for potentially hurting the show.

This is really just a dismal situation across the board. To think that maybe 5-10 years ago, some of these numbers would be worth celebrating, or at least not cause Pearl-clutching, but things are rough.

I think TITANIQUE is in genuine trouble. There is no way they can sink (*tee hee*) any lower. CELEBRITY AUTOBIOGRAPHY shuttering actually did surprise me a little bit because it costs nothing to run except the salaries (and possible rights usage of the stories), but I guess ultimately there was a bottom and they hit it.

I’m not for reading the tea leaves so quickly, but with the amount of closing announcements, coupled with general underperformance at the Tonys for most shows (no musical won more than 4), and the reality that last minute sales are the driving force of filling houses these days, I think we’re in danger, girl. The only problem is what’s going to be around to fill the houses when they clear out?

Most shows are not performing on Juneteenth, and instead opting for another performance on a different day.

The Fear of 13 never announcing a closing is strange. I always thought it was weird that Kim K signed on right as their grosses started to dip.

I was always curious what came of that Titanique bombshell story about the GM from the Off Broadway production that was cooking the books...

I do think the Knicks impacted Broadway this week, but next week might be no better given the World Cup and issues with crowding and transit + Juneteenth and Father's Day. We're still a month away from peak summer tourism.

There's a scenario in which the following shows close between now and end of September. I don't think ALL will, but none of their numbers are good:

  • Titanique (a case study of how not to do a Broadway transfer. What a predictable fiasco.)
  • Two Strangers
  • Juliet (has been struggling for so long and I don't think Chrissy Metz is the type who will turn box office around)
  • Just in Time (depends on casting; a band of 11 and cast of 20 with some star salaries isn't cheap for a house that small)
  • BVSC (running cost not that far off from Just in Time)
  • Great Gatsby (depends on casting and/or producer ego)
  • Maybe Happy Ending (unless star casting efforts are underway)
  • Mincemeat
  • Six
  • Cats (too early to tell how that will settle in)

Could be a bleak fall for musical offerings on Broadway.

[Aladdin and Chicago were also disastrous last week, but those aren't traditional Broadway economics]

This is pretty dismal overall. I thought Titanique would make it to Labor Day. But I don't see how they do with these numbers, unless investors have already agreed they are willing to shovel their money into the fire to get the show to its end date. I thought this show could really be helped by a smart Tonys performance so it wouldn't matter if they won anything or not. But the performance was ill conceived, didn't showcase the actual vibe of the show very well, and had really rough vocal performances.

I would have thought other shows would get a more noticeable bump after some fun televised performances. So far Schmigadoon is the only one with a significant one. It's possible this week is muted due to the Knicks fever and folks wanting to stay away. But if we don't see a change next week, then there likely is no bump. Im mostly thinking about The Lost Boys and Cats: The Jellicle Ball. The former is holding fine, but the expense of the show (and no major bump in sales to ride)  sort of puts it into Death Becomes Her territory. Can it outlast that production? The latter feels like its floating along its breakeven constantly and cant seem to get to the next level. If they cant do something to make this a hotter ticket, I struggle to see it lasting past Labor Day.

@Ermengarde

Despite the crappy grosses everywhere this week, I still hold fast that Mincemeat is humming along just fine. I can’t see them shuttering over the summer short of the bottom dropping out completely. It’s become the sleeper hit of last season

@Ermengarde

It's definitely too early to tell how Cats: The Jellicle Ball will do, the good news is though is not only do they have a performance on The Tonight Show scheduled but they're kicking off this year's NYC Pride March so hopefully that gives them an added bump up in sales.

CATS will pick up and do well over the summer.

Mincemeat will be fine.   Two Strangers can run, even on those numbers, over the summer.  Titanique is cheaper to run - hopefully the rest of the summer's numbers are stronger for them.

& Juliet and Maybe Happy Ending looked to have run their course - with their weekly expenses being high.  Lost Boys capacity seeming to decline even if seats become more expensive to counter. They are still barely breaking even, if they are.  Good for Schmigadoon!, Death of A Salesman and Ragtime.

Could Just In Time have even a bigger star (outside of the theater) in its pocket? ....

Who could you cast in that role?

I'd love to see Michael Buble or Seth MacFarlane play Bobby.

Seth MacFarlane in a musical would get me back there (and I was bored s#!+less by JIT)

To date Macfarlane has turned everything down, even short runs and “you pick the project” projects. I’d be happy to see him on Broadway (or Encores or someplace) someday but I don’t expect to.

Buble has been compared to Darin and Sinatra so much over his career that I doubt he’d come into this of all things.

I can’t think of many guys who are incredible famous (to a different audience than the people who’ve already gone) AND would be willing to be the fourth actor to play this role on Broadway.

Shows are most likely closing because the pipeline is probably building back up a little bit after a quiet 2025-26 season, and forthcoming titles are jockeying for position in houses within their range. If there weren't many shows eyeing NYC, flagging titles might have a longer leash — probably better for the theatre owners to have something in their houses that makes them a bit of money, rather than nothing at all.

Titanique has been reported at around 900k a week to run. Not sure what you consider "cheaper"?

Took the words outta my mouth -- even though it's not an elaborate looking production, between the royalties for the songs and a few (presumably) high "star" salaries, it's a deceptively expensive show in its current iteration.

Titanique also has a sizable orchestra as required by the venue, further adding to its costs.

It also never recouped off-Broadway despite running for several years. Those rights are a major drag and I think there’s a ceiling to what audiences are willing to spend on a show like this.
